2. A Pneumatic
HouseholdRevolutionise the kitchen and home
by introducing better and new products
with an innovative technology through
design intervention.
What are we
trying to achieve?
3. Pneumatics is not a new and revolutionary idea. The technology exists, and is widely used as a centralised energy source for
a multitude of tools in a workshop environment. It is a system that delivers power in the form of compressed air to tools, this in
turn powers small air motors that translate the flow of air into mechanical motion. The energy is converted at the tool itself, and
the delivery system works in a similar way to a electrical circuit.
An existing technology
What is Pneumatics
The application of pressurized gases to
produce mechanical motion.
4. Smaller and more compact
Lighter units
Greater power density (smaller units required for same amount of power)
Generate less heat
Can be used in more volatile environments
Does not require auxiliary speed controller
Larger, heavier units
Lower power density (larger units required for the same amount of power)
Generates more heat
More efficient
Requires maintenance
Has brushes that wear out over time
Pneumatic Air Motors Universal Motors
VS.
Rotary motion can be generated with compressed air via an air motor. These have certain advantages over traditional universal
motors that are currently being used in the vast majority of electrical appliances that require rotary motion around the home.
Motors A comparison
5. Case study
There are a few pneumatic products on the market that are readily available for the average consumer to use at home - in the
garden. These applications include pressure washers and paint sprayers, they are also a good example of industrial products
and applications being used in home. The use of pneumatics so close to the home presents a .. for the opportunity to introduce
the technology within the home.

16. investigation
categories
Core R&D activities are experimental activities:
a. whose outcome cannot be known or determined in advance on the basis of current knowledge, information or
experience, but can only be determined by applying a systematic progression of work that:
i. is based on principles of established science; and
ii. proceeds from hypothesis to experiment, observation and evaluation, and leads to logical conclusions; and
b. that are conducted for the purpose of generating new knowledge (including new knowledge in the form of new or
improved materials, products, devices, processes or services)

17. Vortex Cooling
Current setup cannot achieve -30’C temperatures - current compressor
cannot sustained required pressure of 90 PSI
Minimum temp @ -5’C on cold end
Maximum temp @ 60’C on hot end
Cooler ‘works’ but needs to work at colder temperatures than current
KEy Points
Temperatures need to be BELOW -18’C (freezer temperatures) to provide
benefit over freezers - To provide faster cooling
Mixing hot and cold end streams give the average of two temperatures
Cold end is more efficient than hot end
18. Air + Water
Adding air into running water increases water pressure (possibly efficiency)
Water and air don’t mix so there isn’t a smooth stream of liquid
Increasing the pressure of air creates a misting effect rather than a constant stream
Low pressure required to generate sufficient water pressure without misting
KEy Points
19. Milk Tap
Made fully functioning prototype
Very low working pressures - can be below 5 PSI
Viable system even with 12v digital mini compressor
System is compatible with existing milk bags
Competitor requires liquid pump to deliver milk
System requires maintenance and cleaning which takes 45mins
Our system has no moving parts in contact with milk
Cleaning procedure for our system is much simpler
KEy Points vs. competitor
20. Other explorations : Pressurized Kitchen sink
Potential for use with hydraulic turbine to create rotary station for kitchen
appliances
Head attachments to faucet allow for added functionality and power in
cleaning - eg. scourer, sponge, brushes etc.
Small enclosed compressor unit can be placed underneath sink
Noise level of existing units quite high - approx. 80dB
May require refitting of existing plumbing setup
Possibility of increase in water consumption (even if water is recycled in
system)
Benefits Limitations
(High pressure water)
21. Other explorations : Canisterisation
Portable power source
Safer around wet environments
Could potentially allow for faster ‘charging’ vs. batteries
Can be used to assist in existing processes
Small volume of air - even at 250 Bar (3500 PSI)
Use only in low air flow applications
May take a period of time to recharge
Danger related to malfunctions is a potential concern

HIGHLIGHTS
Compressed Air is being re-branded as HPA (High Pressure Air) and is a
much more modern and desireable description of our power source
Opportunity: Rebrand our project and output - HPA Household
Noone knows about and/or uses vortex cooling / heating in an industrial
setting
Opportunity: Why hasn’t it been commercialised? Can we bring something new to the
market?
Cooling compressed air during compression and Heating compressed
air prior to expansion can double it’s energy density
Opportunity: If we aspply a heating element to our compressed air outlets, we can acheive
greater results?
BARRIERS
Air compressors with over 3 Horsepower will generally require 415V power
supply, which the average household does not have.
Solution: Focus on applications that can be powered by 3HP Air Compressor
Compressed air loses power over distance
Solution: We need a 200psi compressor with a 17cfm rating

MILK TAP
81. the milk tap system
offers a healthy
way of storing and
serving milk
instead of using
a large number of
plastic milk contai-
ners a day, restau-
rants will only need
to replace a large
bulk milk bag a
couple of times a
week
keeps plastic waste
at a minimum
also, the milk bag is
recycleable
beverage is kept
cool at all times, in
a storage system
beneath the tap
prevents milk from
going bad and
causing unwanted

ning
low contamination
risk, bag is always
sealed and reaches

83. Manual Pump
The manual offering provides
customers with an electricity-free
method of delivering milk.
Each unit holds one ten litre milk bag.
Delivery of the milk is manual, and the
chamber will need to be re-pressurized
every so often.
The hand pump design creates an area
for visual interest and adds theatre to
the process of coffee making

85. Stand Alone
The fridge unit is designed as an
enclosed system where a compressor is
built-in. providing a seamless transition
between standard bar fridges and our
system.
A stand alone fridge unit also provides
an easy entry point for cafes.

External ports on the fridge enables
connection between fridge and milk tap.
Cleaning the system can be achieved by
using a cleaning solution bag or simply
be changing the tubing in the system.
A proprietary lock system built into the
door provides an air tight seal which
allows the pressurization of the fridge
87. The milk bags sit into trays that then
slide into place - when in position, the
valve automatically connects to a fitting
at the rear of the fridge unit.

88. Complete System
A third offering of the milk tap system
is to offer a complete system to cus-
tomers. This system is a stand-alone
unit which can be added to a cafe fitout.
A complete system is specifically
catered for new fit outs rather than a
retro-fit scenario.
