1. Lab 10: Boom Construction
Competition
EG1003 Section F1
Date of Experiment: November 12th, 2014
Date Due: November 16th, 2014
D’Asia Fleming, Tia Moore, Tyler Simon
3. Experimental Objective
• Design and construct boom
• Enter boom in competition against other booms
• Learn how booms are used and factors
considers while designing
• Create a boom that extends 1.5 meters from the
edge of the anchor
4. Introduction
• Booms lift and move heavy loads
– Loads even heavier than the actual boom
• Some examples of booms
– Cantilever Boom
– Rotating Boom
– Telescoping Forklift Boom
– Architecture Boom

Bridge (double cantilever)
5. Background Information
• When constructing a boom engineers must be
aware of stress and strain
• Stress is the external force acting upon an object
• Strain is the measure of deformation cause by
stress

12. Results
• Our boom was tied in 5th
place.
– Weight of boom: 273.000g
– Anchor time 120 sec.
– Length 1.45 m

13. Conclusion
• Boom came in 5th place
• Future improvements include:
- Build a stronger boom
- Test trial the design before entering it into
the competition
- Plan out time
