DESIGN TARGETS

The hypothesis of intervention was of a structure that will expand easily, be built easily
and will carry its own weight so it could be independent from the existing building and
so a light and modular structure.
We chose the ETFE pillow, 3-layer system with a substructure in steel.
This system allows us to control the environment under it, thus giving it extra LEED
points,
in its modularity an expansion can be considered from the beginning and it takes
minimum time to build as its mainly a prefabricated system
as well as giving it an architectural edge from the form we can give it and potentially
making it another interest point.

Re-use: Aluminium lid and base profiles can be reused for reconstructions or new constructions
Subsequent use Valves, aluminium lids and base profiles can be subsequently used.
Closed-loop recycling: Plain NOWOFLON® ET-foils and valves can be recycled into new valves.
The aluminium components are recycled (statistical value for buildings: 85 %).
Open-loop recycling: Plain NOWOFLON® ET-foils can be reprocessed. The transparent ETFE offcuts
are recycled into valves and other small parts by external companies and are used for new cushions.
Aluminium lids and base profiles can be reprocessed.

Pilkington glass performance:
1st stage - "photocatalytic”: the coating reacts with daylight to break down
organic dirt.
2ndstage- "hydrophilic”: rainwater hits the glass and spreads evenly, running
off in a "sheet" and taking the loosened dirt with it, also drying
quickly without leaving streaks

In this process, a gaseous chemical mixture is brought in contact with the hot glass substrate
(approximate temperature range 900°F – 1350°F) and a pyrolytic reaction occurs at the surface of the
substrate leading COATING TECHNOLOGY – PROCESSES:
■ Compatible with the properties of glass
■ Able to form uniform thickness films over large areas
■ Able to vary the thickness of these films accuratel
■ Able to produce final product at rates which make it economically viable
■ Be safe to operate & environmentally friendly
