Smirnoff Mansion in Tverskoy
Boulevard is a unique Moscow venue
for high class events of any kind,
located in the very heart of the city -
just in 10 minutes walk to Red Square.
5. EXTERIOR
This house is a real pearl of Art Nouveau at Tverskoy Boulevard, one of the most interesting
works of the architect Shechtel.
It offers 8 beautifully decorated halls in different styles, able to host as a gala-dinner or a
cocktail reception, as a business meeting or a conference
6. HISTORY
Smirnov, the heir of vodka’s magnates acquired the old manor on
Tverskoy Boulevard in 1900. Empire-style mansion did not suit the
owner, and he hires the architect Theodore Shekhtel to reconstruct
the building. As a result we can see yet another great work of the
great architect of the modern era in Moscow.
Shekhtel alters the facade, adds balcony, long semi-circular
windows, smooth, glazed bay windows. Interiors of the mansion
become the real sensation. Eight ceremonial rooms, assembled in
enfilade are changing styles one after another. There are
"Romanesque hall ", "Classic Hall", " Egyptian Hall," "Greek Hall",
"Piano room", "Antechamber ", "Boudoir” and "Office".
Only the Egyptian fells behind the main enfilade and overlooks the
courtyard. The building was equipped with steam heating,
ventilation and fully electrified.
7. HISTORY
Smirnov settled here with his wife and children, and lives up to the
revolution of 1917. Children’s rooms decorated in Russian fairy
tales style are in the attic.
In addition to Shekhtel’s interiors another picante detail hidden in
the ownership of the building. Bazilevsky family’s property is the
base of the house. That was an elegant Empire-style mansion
owned by Peter Andreevich Bazilevskii known for the incredible
painting collection brought from overseas. Horses were his other
passion. He even drove out the horse wagon, except that the
servant rules at that time and the owner was holding a whip. They
say that his serfs once carved their master for his brutality and
ruthlessness. Lermontov was a friend of Bazilevsky. Here at
Tverskoy Boulevard was the last meeting of Lermontov and
Barbara Lopukhina. There he saw Olenka Bakhmet'eva, the five
year old daughter of his beloved and wrote later:
8. HISTORY
Revolutionary Tribunal was here in 1922, and then the building housed the
people's court, then - the prosecutor's office. The prosecutor's office occupied
the building until recently, and the Shechtel’s interiors were not accessible for
the general public, however it was enriched by the huge chandelier hanging on
chains - the war trophy brought here in 1945.
The restoration of the mansion was carried out in 2000s. Recently there are
several restaurants and clubs in the building. Part of a house is owned by the
pension fund.
