EARTHQUAKE

TIPS
Inside the Home
• Store emergency supplies in a
safe location.
• Install latches on all cabinets to
protect utensils and all other
valuables.
Outside the Home
• Have a plan to meet at a
specific location outside the
house it the house is destroyed
• Make sure the house or
building is anchored to its
foundation.
• Secure weak structures by
adding strong braces on the
outside and the inside.
There are two types of earthquake scale: the mercalli scale
and the richter scale.
Earthquakes are measured on the mercalli intensity scale. This
include the ground motion and damage.
The richter scale are based on released energy by an
earthquake. The mercalli scale is used to indicate the intensity
of the earthquake.
BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE
• Place heavier objects on lower shelves to prevent breakage and
personal injury.
• Strap your water heater to wall studs with metal plumbing tape to
prevent broken pipes and fires.
• Keep on hand a flashlight; a portable radio with fresh batteries; a
first-aid kit; a fire extinguisher, a three-day supply of fresh water;
nonperishable, ready-to-eat foods; and an adjustable wrench for
turning off gas and water.
DURING AN
EARTHQUAKE• Stay calm and stay put.
• If outdoors, stay away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
If driving, move away from overpasses, stop slowly in a safe area,
and stay in your vehicle. Stay off bridges. Listen to the radio.
• If in a high-rise building, stay in the building, on the same floor.
Get under a desk and stay away from outside walls and windows.
Do not use the elevator.
In the case of an earthquake if you are inside your house or a building you
would illustrated the picture in figure 1. In addition, if there is nothing to
go under figure 2 can be demonstrated inside the house or building as
well. However, if you are outside in the open area figure 2 would be a
better picture to carry out where the boy is in the circle. Cover and hold.
Figure 1 Figure 2
AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE
• Wear sturdy shoes to protect your feet from broken glass.
• Check for injuries and apply necessary first aid.
• Clean up spilled medicines, bleaches, gasoline, and other
flammable liquids.
• Check for building damage and potential safety hazards- like
cracks around chimneys or foundations.
• Be prepared for aftershocks, which can further damage
weakened structures.
• Listen to the radio for public-safety instructions.
This is what the road will
looks like after a major
earthquake has occurred.
After the earthquake you
should listen to the news for
the latest update.
