2. Introduction
A longstanding presence in the Southampton, NY community, Troy
Buckner is a private art dealer who previously owned and operated
Clark Fine Art. Among the contemporary artists of note that Troy
Buckner has exhibited are Larry Rivers, Donald Sultan, and Chuck
Close.
Now in his late 70s, Close has helped define the possibilities
presented by portrait art for half a century. In the mid-1960s, he
moved to New York and began focusing on large-scale realistic
portraits. Laying down paintbrushes in 1967, Close concentrated
exclusively on airbrush for a period of time to achieve various effects.
This was augmented by a grid system that enabled each facial detail
to be precisely mapped.
3. Chuck Close
Perhaps Close’s most famous technique is the use of
autonomous colors and shapes in layers that appear abstract
when viewed up close. These shapes cohere to create an
accurate vision of the subject’s face when taken in from a
distance.
Chuck Close’s art output has continued undiminished since
1988, when he was paralyzed from the neck down due to an
arterial collapse. After regaining a certain amount of movement
in his arms, Close began painting again with the use of a wrist
brace that holds the brush. Ever an experimenter, he has made
use of a diverse range of techniques in recent years, including
computer-generated printing and daguerreotype.
