4. Enterprise Storage Report – November 20164
Sector Overview
Scope of report
This report covers companies that provide storage technologies for enterprise customers. Companies providing Scale Out NAS,
Hybrid Storage, Converged Infrastructure, NVRAM are all required for enterprise companies which are data heavy and look for
high IOPS, distributed computing. This report is for all enterprises setting up data centers and like environments and its doesn’t
cover cloud storage providers.
Following are the major business models in the sector:
The scope of this report includes equity as well as debt funding received by the companies.
Business Model Description
Converged Infrastructure
Grouping of storage, computing and networking components in an IT environment. This enables consolidation,
centralization of IT resources, further getting best out of virtualized environments.
Software Defined Storage
Data storage technologies which separate storage hardware from the software that manages the storage
infrastructure. The software enabling a software-defined storage environment provides policy management for
feature options such as deduplication, replication, thin provisioning, snapshots and backup.
Backup
Backup storage is storage that is intended as a copy of the storage that is actively in use so that, if the storage
medium such as a hard disk fails and data is lost on that medium, it can be recovered from the copy
Passive Storage
Less expensive storage media, such as optical storage, SSDs, hard disks which is used to store less frequently used
data
Active Storage Storage solutions which are used for data which is accessed frequently (active data)

30. Enterprise Storage Report – November 2016
Description of Key Business ModelsDescription of key Technologies/Business Models in Enterprise Storage and their marquee companies
• NVRAM - Non Volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM) is a technology that continues to retain data even after the power is turned off. This
is in contrast to DRAM and SRAM that lose data upon loss of power.
• All Flash Arrays - A flash array is a solid state storage disk(SSD) system that contains multiple flash memory drives instead of spinning hard disk
drives.
• Hybrid Storage - Hybrid drives are a combination of NAND based flash SSDs with hard disk (HDD) technology, primarily for cost effectiveness
and to increase IOPS. Hybrid storage is available in two formats, Dual Drive - HDD and SSD separately on a single machine and Solid State
Hybrid drive (SSHD) - HDD and SSD in a singe integrated device
• Optical Storage – Devices which use a laser light to read information on the disc and to "write" new information to the disk for future retrieval
• HDD - Devices which use one or more rigid rapidly rotating magnetic disks (platters) to store data
• SSD - Storage devices which primarily use an integrated circuit(IC) as memory to store data
• SAN - A storage area network (SAN) is a dedicated network that provides access to consolidated, block level data storage. SANs are primarily
used to enhance storage devices, such as disk arrays, tape libraries, and optical jukeboxes, accessible to servers so that the devices appear like
locally attached devices to the operating system.
• NAS - Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to a
heterogeneous group of clients.
• Converged Infrastructure - is the grouping of storage, computing and networking components in an IT environment. This enables
consolidation, centralization of IT resources, further getting best out of virtualized environments.
• Software Defined Storage - Data storage technologies which separate storage hardware from the software that manages the storage
infrastructure. The software enabling a software-defined storage environment provides policy management for feature options such as
deduplication, replication, thin provisioning, snapshots and backup.
• File System - The method and data structures that an operating system use to organize the files on the disk
• Server Side Caching - Server side caching involves the activity of caching 'hot' data on the server, rather than pushing it to storage. This
reduces I/O bottlenecks and significantly improves performance. In some cases flash storage is also used for caching and this is known as
'server side flash caching'.
• Backup - storage is intended to be kept as a copy of the storage that is actively in use so that, if the storage medium such as a hard disk fails
and data is lost on that medium, it can be recovered.
