Tony Miller: Careers
Summary:
My working life, up to the present time spans a period of 78 years.
During that time I embraced a variety of careers which fall under the
following categories:
1. Electronic technician;
2. Army Service;
3. Appliance Store Retailer;
4. Builder;
5. TAFE Lecturer; and
6. Community Service.
Education:
i. High school. Grade 10- 1934;
ii. Adult Matriculation- 1964;
iii. Bachelor of Science at the University of Queensland (part time) –
1971;
iv. Bachelor of Educational Studies at the University of Queensland
(part time) - 1978;
v. Attended a courseon Microprocessors,MonashUniversityVictoria
(1980).

2. Army Service, Word War 2:
I joined the Australian Armed forces in 1941. During my service I
reported in a Vickers Machine Gun Battalion, Signals Unit and an
Engineering unit. I then ventured to Port Moresby, Wau, Lae, Bouganville
and Green Island in the Solomons group.
Followingmy service,I wasdischargedon18/1/1946withtherankof Staff
Sergeant.
3. Appliance Store Retailer
Miilmerran Electrical. My first venture into running my own
business.
Store in Millmerran Qld 1948 – 1950
Radio Exhibits. Appliance store Stanley St W, Gabba. 1952 – 1958.
Video Electrics. Expanded to four appliance stores, two at
Woolloongabba one at Chardon’s Corner and another at Mt
Gravatt.1958 – 1970
4. Builder.
Using sub-contractors, I built the following buildings:
My own home;
Two retail shops and hall at West End for AHEPA charity
Association;
Woolloongabba Arcade(7 shops and 9 offices upstairs} Stanley St;
Chardons Cnr 4 retail shops; and
Mt Gravatt. 2 shops and officers upstairs.

5. TAFE Lecturer
Appointed Lecturer at the South Brisbane College of TAFE. During my
time, I taught Electronics, Mathematics and Physics in the Associated
Diploma of Electronics and Communications 1971 – 1974. I was then
appointed Education Officer 1974 – 1975. (Curriculum Section. Head
Office). Following this I was appointed Senior Instructor at the South
Brisbane College from 1975 to 1978.
I was then appointed Officer in Charge of Electrical, Electronic,
Communications, Computer, Engineering, Bridging for Nursing and
Illumination Courses (1978 – 1985).
Finally, I wasappointed Acting Principalforthe South Brisbaneand Mount
Gravatt Campuses whenever the Principals were away on other duties.
6. Community Service
I was involved in one of the committees that was responsible for the
construction of the Greek Church of St George at West End.
I am a foundation member, past President and Life member of the South
Side Parish which was responsible for the formation of the Parish and
constructionof the Greek ChurchThe Dormition of the Theotokos.During
which I was the Chairman of the Building Committee and responsiblefor
construction.
I have been a member of the Australian Hellenic Educational and
Progressive Association (AHEPA) for more than 60 years and am Past
National, State and Chapter President.
I am currently the secretary of the Hellenic Branch of the RSL.

I retired at 93 years of age after running a video store for 25 years with
my son in law Peter. I now have the pleasure of spending my days and
nights running errands for my beautiful wife, Mary.
