Expanding on HEA Work

Pre-entry and induction – (Focus on Programme)
– explore the practicalities of ensuring informed students arrive at the institution
on day one
– ensure they arrive ready to study
– the challenge of managing student expectations.

•

Learning and teaching – (Module level mostly)
– supporting effective learning, assessment and teaching
– enabling the development of sound generic study skills.

•

Friendship and peer support (Focus on Programmes)
– peer mentoring has become a valuable approach in aiding student transition,
benefitting both mentees and mentors.

•

Participation and belonging (Programmes and Modules)
– develop a sense of belonging within the university learning environment – e.g.
Programme, School, Campus, etc – Communities of Learners

• Clarification of programme information
pre-entry – pilot programme in advance of
next available prospectus plus on-line

• Pre-entry activities (pre-reading, etc.) – for

2015-16
Timetabling Review
• Programme Teams should have an overview of
the pattern of class-contact teaching events …
for the core modules within their programme –
and have influence on this.
• As far as possible, timetable all classes
associated with a module in one day - get rid of
concept of the block timetable
• Electronic attendance monitoring
LLA
• In 2007, 67% of students in LLA were
enrolled on modules, 33% on
programmes
• In 2013 this situation has reversed
totally

Expanding on HEA Work • Pre-entry and induction – (Focus on Programme) – explore the practicalities of ensuring informed students arrive at the institution on day one – ensure they arrive ready to study – the challenge of managing student expectations. • Learning and teaching – (Module level mostly) – supporting effective learning, assessment and teaching – enabling the development of sound generic study skills. • Friendship and peer support (Focus on Programmes) – peer mentoring has become a valuable approach in aiding student transition, benefitting both mentees and mentors. • Participation and belonging (Programmes and Modules) – develop a sense of belonging within the university learning environment – e.g. Programme, School, Campus, etc – Communities of Learners
  • 7. Recurring Themes • Role of programme leader within overall “Primacy of the Programme” theme • Role of personal tutor • Peer mentoring • Engaging students is key- earlier the better • Personal development planning

Primacy of the Programme • Reinforce and develop the role of the Programme Leader through establishment of PL forums in each School (following the brief from existing ones) and UWS-Wide PL conferences– February 2014 • Establish integrated links between Module Learning Outcomes and Stage Learning Outcomes
  • 9. Pre-entry and Induction • Clarification of programme information pre-entry – pilot programme in advance of next available prospectus plus on-line information • Pre-entry activities (pre-reading, etc.) – for pilot programmes during Trimester 2 of current session, review and expand for 2015-16
  • 10. Timetabling Review • Programme Teams should have an overview of the pattern of class-contact teaching events … for the core modules within their programme – and have influence on this. • As far as possible, timetable all classes associated with a module in one day - get rid of concept of the block timetable • Electronic attendance monitoring
