American Dream, Really? For Whom?
While recently reading the July issue of Time magazine entitled The History Of The American
Dream..Is It Still Real? By Jon Meacham, I noticed some comments that simply struck a cord.
Please take a look and let me know if you recognize where my thought patterns are directed
and if you agree or disagree.
The article starts off by saying, “Work hard and you will prosper: the premise of the
American Dream has nurtured our nation and changed the world. Here’s how the
idea got started- and why its future is in doubt.“ But the picture shown (as is above) is Go Daddy!
the Norman Rockwell 1943 rendering of “Freedom from want”, his vision of prosperity.

2. Hmmmm. (Remember these are excerpts from the article)
“That great enemy of democratic capitalism, economic inequality, is real and growing.
The unemployment rate is dispiritingly high. The nation’s long-term fiscal health is at
risk, and the American political system, the engine of what Thomas Jefferson called
“the world’s best hope,” shows no sign of reaching solutions commensurate with the
problems of the day. It has not always been this way. Really, for whom is he saying that it
hasn’t always been this way?
James Truslow Adams, a popular historian, wrote a book, The Epic of America, a history of the
nation that was to popularize a term not yet in the general vernacular in those last years was
“that American dream of a better, richer, and happier life for all our citizens of every rank which is
the greatest contribution we have as yet made to the thought and welfare of the world.” It
was not a new thing, this abiding belief that tomorrow would be better than today. Posts
“That dream or hope,” Adams wrote, “has been present from the start.” Ok, Ok, we all
dream for a prosperous future. Who doesn’t want tomorrow to be better than today?

proof. The U.S. Department of Commerce, on behalf of Vice President Joe Biden’s *Email
White House Task Force on the Middle Class, emphasized descriptive language rather
than statistics, finding that “middle-class families are defined by their aspirations more than

their income. [We assume] that middle-class families aspire to homeownership, a car, college
education for their children, health and retirement security and occasional family vacations.”
The government’s verdict: “It is more difficult now than in the past for many people to achieve
middle-class status because prices for certain key goods — health care, college and housing —
have gone up faster than income.” Median household income has also remained stagnant for
more than a decade; when the figures are adjusted for inflation, Americans are making less
now than they were when Bill Clinton was in the White House.
This is where my headache intensifies, the government actually says that “we assume” as what
the wants of the middle class is. Household incomes remained stagnant for more than a decade?
Making less money now than when Bill Clinton was Prez? WOW! Am I the only one that
recognizes there is a problem?
There is so much more to insert and discuss but my stomach is turning, because the country is
literally going backwards and down the tubs. There are hundreds of groups that are crying in
the wilderness about the downward spiral happening right before our very eyes but we want to
complain about the most menial topics.
The article writer does insert more than once about the future of “The American Dream” so I
must say that he doesn’t have his head totally stuck in the ground. He also mentioned “the
widening gap between rich and poor suggests the Dream is becoming more elusive for more
people than at any other time in our history.”
The part about the middle class protagonist and the black man conversing about equality is
actually more indicative of the thought pattern of most people of certain groups. “You talk as
if the whole purpose of this country since the start has been to frustrate Negroes,”
says Angstrom. “Hell, you’re just ten percent. The fact is most people don’t give a

3. damn what you do. This is the freest country around, make it if you can, if you can’t,
die gracefully.” It’s so easy to say that when the playing field isn’t level and you received
hundreds of years head start.
I’ll close with another statement by Adams in The Epic of America, by its very nature capitalism
produces winners — and losers. Some dreams come true; some don’t. Equality of outcome,
though, is not the same thing as equality of opportunity, and equality of opportunity is at the
heart of the American vision. “And that dream has been realized more fully in actual life here than
anywhere else,” Adams wrote, “though very imperfectly even among ourselves.”
American Dream
DING, DING, DING…there it is, my point made in a short sentence, “equality of opportunity is at
the heart of the American vision!” Which leads back to my initial question, American Dream,
Really? For Whom?
Everyone has an opinion or like to speak about a particular topic. Well, why not make
