Lab Technician- Anglo American - Johannesburg (crown mines)
Having gained a taste for instrumental techniques such as ICP-OES and XRF, I joined Anglo American as a lab
technician. I worked there for 5 years on contract; due to business restructuring my contract was not renewed. I
worked in Kumba Iron ore department where I received samples from sample preparation team and put them in
our starlims system. Create worksheets and perform analysis as per analytical request form which included:
• Determination of Loss On Ignition using Thermal Gravimetric Analyser (TGA),
Preparation of glass beads using katanax.
• Sulphur determination using ELTRA.
• Relative density using pycnometers.
Complying with SHE standards and operating procedures was my responsibility by ensuring that work
environment is tidy and safe to work. I had to make sure I carry out task according to the SOP’s and perform
quality checks in order to maintain ISO 17025 accreditation. I participated in internal and externa audits.
Key Achievements:
• Determining LOI using Thermal Gravimetric Analyser
• Preparation of glass beads for XRF analysis
• Operating Sulphur analyser
• Operation of Laboratory Information Management System(LIMS)
• Safety, Health and Environment(Level 1)
• Quality management system
• Collaboration
2. January 2008-December 2008
Trainee (internship) – Element 6 – springs (Gauteng)
As part of Diamond Research Laboratories characterisation department, I used to prepare samples for ICP by
dissolving 1g of synthetic diamond powder in a litre of aquarigia. I was also introduced to XRF where I did
quantitative analysis on diamond samples, save results on excel spreadsheet. I was then given a project to
compare the 2 techniques (XRF and ICP-OES)
