Cultural
Innovations in
Indian Architecture
ndia is a land of myriad architectural
Ilandmarks. The country houses some of the
most historic structures in the world including
the likes of Taj Mahal, Lotus Temple, Qutub Minar,
and Golden Temple. It has to its credit some of the
oldest planned cities in the world. Each structure
portrays the country’s cultural richness. Over time,
we have adopted architectural styles of different
countries around the world and are combining
them with our artistic finesse.
The advent of technological innovations has
opened doors for numerous possibilities from an
architectural viewpoint. We have already
witnessed how technology is playing a major role
in upgrading modern architecture to the next
level. Leading architects and top architecture
firms are collaborating to create revolutionary
establishments. They are bringing cutting-edge
technology into play with the objective of
providing the audience a lasting experience.
The passage of time has brought along with it
many advanced architectural styles from around
the world. In addition, there has been growing
interest among private and public bodies to invest
in development of architecture and landmarks.
Our country is a cultural hot-pot which provides
the scope of healthy interactions between
individuals of different castes, creeds, religions,
and languages. Each individual brings along their
own ideas and opinion, which contributes to a
vast ocean of knowledge.
This cultural hybridization can be seen in Indian
architecture, which is greatly influenced by
Persian, Turkish, and Portuguese architectural
styles. It is rich and vibrant; an amalgam of various
cultural components which speaks for its diverse
characteristic. Indian temples, mosques, and
churches speak for the people’s devotion towards
religion, their belief and cultural richness.
Architecture as a form of art has definitely evolved
in India, but still holds tight to its roots. The
magnificent monuments of the country are vivid
examples of the same.T R

12. Established in 2004, Chitkara School of Planning
and Architecture (CSPA) is a constituent of
Chitkara University Punjab. Located along the
Chandigarh-Patiala National Highway, the institute is
within easy reach of Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula,
Ambala, and Patiala. It is committed to excellence and is
known for its vibrant academic environment, distinguished
faculty, brilliant students, and proactive collaboration with
industry.
CSPA has infrastructural facilities matching the industry
standards, so that the students get to study in an
environment conducive to the current practices of
contemporary architecture needs. The students have access
to department’s own library facility housed in over 300 sq
meters of space with an exhaustive collection of about 5600
reputed volumes/journals/magazines. Additionally, e-books
and archived students thesis and other important
documentation works have been
procured from all over the globe for
ready reference to
students/scholars. The computer lab
has about 40 workstations equipped
and regularly updated with all the
latest licensed software relevant to
the field of architecture. Other
important facilities present in the
department are a climate responsive
workshop, a carpentry workshop,
and a surveying equipment lab. Other allied infrastructure
has students’ access to a laser cutting and 3-D modeling
machine and an exploration hub (aimed at providing a
window to the students for their entrepreneurial pursuits).
Promoting Excellence in Education
CSPA’s excellent standpoints in the architectural education
industry have led students from various parts of India,
Nepal, and Bhutan to join the institution. The university
conducts a regular “Semester Exchange Program”, where
students from Spain, Korea, and Iceland spend one to two
semesters at Chitkara for study purposes. In addition,
collaborative workshops with students and faculty of some
French and Japanese Universities have become an annual
feature.
The school runs a 5-year B.Arch. degree program, with an
annual intake of 120 students. The program is organized in
two stages. Stage one builds essential skills and sensibility
required to work with professional architects. Stage two
focuses on state-of-the-art practices, while also preparing
students for graduate studies and research. An intensive 32
week long professional internship separates the two stages.
CSPA has designed its curriculum in such a way that it
promotes a human-centric, context-specific design approach
while addressing challenges of technology and issues of
environmental sustainability, drawing upon wisdom of the
past while adapting to current and changing needs of the
industry. Their vision is to provide the necessary creative,
technical, and soft skills, coupled with ample interface with
the profession, and make the students technologically
proficient, socially sensitive, and environmentally
responsible.
Dedicated Faculty Shaping Students’ Careers
The school has a large body of professionally proficient,
motivated, and committed core faculty, along with a band
of experienced practitioners as
visiting faculty. Their cumulative
expertise ranges from heritage
conservation, construction
management, disaster risk
management, interior architecture,
and so on- thus offering a
comprehensive, wholesome
resource base, and providing an
in-house facility for students to
upgrade their competence
constantly. They are actively involved in research and
publication, with regular participation in national and
international events. Constant in-service training keeps
them abreast with latest developments in the profession, as
well as in education technology. Several among the faculty
have been awarded for their extraordinary achievements
and contributions.

month through thematic competitions of poster making,
sketching, quizzes, costume parades, and so on. They give special
importance to the “Le Corbusier Day” which is celebrated every
year in October with tremendous zeal and enthusiasm. Another
annual event unique to CSPA is a week-long Design Charette held
each July, in which each participating group involves vertical
integration of students thereby fostering peer learning along with
teamwork and out-of-the-box thinking. Yet another tradition
observed is the annual celebration of the World Heritage Day in
April, when the students organize a public exhibition of the
historic places documented by them during the year and also visit
neighboring village schools to sensitize them on their region’s
natural and cultural resources.
Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular Activities
CSPA not only provides exceptional educational facilities, but
also conducts a variety of co-curricular and extra-curricular
activities to ensure overall development of the students. The
students of CSPA have their own body divided into four houses
viz. Ajanta, Ellora, Sikri, and Modhera which organize many
annual and bi-annual functions with themes related to architecture
and have many competitions to this effect. Sports are also
encouraged and organized every year by the same students’ body.
On the Research Front
Right from its inception, CSPA has nurtured a culture of impactful
research and publication. Besides “Concepts”, the annual publication of
student’s work, the institute also brings out “Creative Space”, the
bi-annual refereed architecture journal of Chitkara University (ISSN
Print: 2321-3892; ISSN Online: 2321-7154), which is indexed in several
renowned journal indexing agencies such as SHERPA, SCILIT,
ZENODO, Scientific Indexing Service, and so on. The school also
publishes its monthly newsletter to provide an insight“ARCHISCAPE”
on the month’s activities.
Financial Assistance
CSPA offers financial grants for meritorious students, including
sponsorships for participation in advanced/extension courses and various
competitions in India. Most interestingly, fully-funded semester
exchanges are facilitated through the Erasmus Plus program, as and when
available. Soft loans and “Earn-while-you-Learn” schemes are also
available on a “Merit-cum-Means” basis for funding educational tours
and other similar activities.

There is no doubt that carrying an under graduate or post
graduate degree will open gates to the world of employment
opportunities. However, graduates need to know that today’s
managers are considering much more than just a degree.
Employers are seeking for individuals who rise out from the
pack. They want graduates who have real-life skills and
improved soft skills that they can relate to their organizations.
Therefore, to contend, students will have to acquire skills and
experience during their studies. REVA has provided primary
attention to equipping students with these skills and practical
experience through a variety of training. This empowers them
not only to compete effectively and successfully but also to

26. Becoming
A Listening
Educator is
Key to
Effective
Classroom
Education
Conducting an
interactive classroom
session not only
enhances the teaching–learning
process, but also opens doors
for innovative educational
procedures. A teacher should
ensure that the classes are
productive and should introduce
new dimensions of learning to
the students. The most crucial
part of an educational system is
the development of a personal
connection between the
teachers and students.
The secret to maintain a
successful classroom session is
to become a listening educator,
even if what they hear is a mix
of whispers and giggles. This
will develop a system
conducive to better
understanding, learning, and
development. The strategies
mentioned below can assist
educators to foster better
communication with the
students and nurture an environment of education,
teamwork, and creativity.
Setting the Context is Important
It is essential to create an environment, which would make
the students feel comfortable in the classroom. Teachers
should treat the students with love and respect, and pay
utmost attention to their needs and problems. It is important
for teachers to realize that they are not here only to take
care of the students for a few hours a day. In fact, it is their
responsibility to nurture them and transform them into
furnished and responsible citizens of the nation. Teachers
should create such an environment, where students should
feel comfortable enough to interact with them.
Understanding the Importance of Listening
Teachers should try to understand what the students need
from the classroom session. Connecting with them will
provide an idea of what lies in their hearts and minds.
Students know what they want from education, what
engages and excites them to attend classes. They are well
aware of the hard work and dedication required to excel in
studies. Listening to students will help in understanding
what problems they are going through in the class. Also, it
will keep them engaged and motivated throughout the class.
Dealing with Problems Strategically
Research states that students seek proper attention from the
teachers throughout a classroom session. If classes are not
interactive and less attention is paid to any student, it may
lead to student dissatisfaction. This may eventually cause
increased dropout rates and poor academic performance. A
listening educator can solve many serious issues like school
violence, indiscipline, and so on. For example, in case of
any dispute between students, if teachers listen to both sides
and have a proper discussion, they can come to a feasible
solution. Moreover, if teachers spend some additional time
to discuss and assess problems of each students, then they
can help the students in dealing with the same.
Listening can enhance Classroom Education
Teachers can ensure interesting and interactive classroom
sessions by paying equal attention to each student.

27. Listening to them and properly understanding their
problems and requirements can help teachers to make
lasting effects via classroom sessions. The following
strategies can help teachers to take classroom education to
the next level.
Active Participation in Classroom Discussions
Conducting interactive classroom sessions requires more
than just listening with the ears. Teachers should provide
their feedback to the students by postures, gestures, facial
expressions, and verbal responses. They should allow
students express their ideas on various topics taught in the
class, and should allow them to complete what they want to
say. They should not directly judge any student. They
should ask for clarification from any students when needed,
and it is also important not to shout out words when the
students do not want to hear.
Tackling Distractions is Important
An active classroom requires the teachers to overcome all
the noise and distractions, and complete the designated
syllabus in time with complete dedication. Although it is a
challenging task, but overcoming all the external and
internal distractions, including personal prejudices and
biases, can help teachers to fully focus on the class. It
assists them to actively listen to what the student is saying.
Becoming an Empathetic Listener
Empathetic listening requires the teachers to fully
understand what the student is saying by reflecting their
emotions. As such, it is positive, non-intrusive, and not
emotionally charged. They should be careful about negating
or brushing off what a student is saying. If students remain
silent, teachers should respect that as a time of reflection.
Demonstrating care and concern for students will encourage
them to open up and present their honest opinion. This can
very well present a sense of victory during tense situations.
Actions speaking louder than Words
Every action of teachers in the class gives a clear picture of
whether they are listening to the students. Maintaining
direct eye contact with the students while they are
explaining something speaks for their dedication. Also, they
can stand next to the student and look directly at their work.
Also, quieting other students while one student speaks, not
interrupting, and offering feedback cues such as nodding,
are many other effective strategies.
An Interactive Class Environment has Multifarious
Advantages
Creating an interactive class environment is beneficial for
both the teachers and the students. With proper interaction,
teachers can gather information about the strengths and
weaknesses of the students. It will also create room for
innovative group activities which can nurture overall
development of the students. Spending some extra time
with students and listening to their problems can initiate
radical changes in them. Children often face situations too
large for their young emotions to handle, and sometimes
they don’t have anyone to share their experiences with.
They have respect for teachers and treat them as role
models. Listening to students is a major step towards their
development. If teachers take the initiative of healthy
interaction with the students, it can work wonders for their
overall development.

32. The world is getting populated day by day & it’s
getting richer at an even faster rate. This rich world
is transforming luxuries of the past into necessities
of the present. How many car(s) or AC(s) were there in the
1980s in our society? A few, right?
The increasing number of cars or ACs is not the problem;
the problem is with the amount of energy they are
consuming. The difference between potential demand & the
available supply of energy resources is rising rapidly.
A standard house loses heat through a variety of routes.
A large amount of energy is wasted in heating the house.
Non-renewable resources, i.e. fossil fuels are in limited
amount & as a responsible citizen, we all should take care
of energy consumption. Although there is another
non-renewable resource, nuclear energy, and a variety of
renewable resources are obtainable, the technologies
available have not been able to make them easily accessible
& cheap.
In colder regions, a large amount of energy is used to heat
the buildings and in hotter regions, there is similar
consumption to cool down the buildings. These energy
consumptions can be reduced by a very large extent if we
tackle with the construction of buildings properly. There are
a number of methods which can deal with the heat loss
through the houses.
Loft insulation is a technique which means adding an
insulation layer in the rooftops. This method can prevent a
lot of energy loss. Some homes are built with a cavity
between the inside and outside walls. If this gap is filled
with an insulating material, heat will pass through far more
slowly than if this space was filled with air. Since the
reduction of window size is not a suitable option, energy
use can be reduced by double glazing the window. This
technique uses two panes of glass with a gap in the middle
to act as an insulator. The gap needs to be filled with a clear
material (unlike cavity wall insulation). This sealed gap is
sometimes filled with an inert gas such as argon, or might
simply be filled with air. The fact that the gap is sealed will
improve the insulation properties of the window. Further
savings could be made using triple glazing (three panes of
glass), but it can be too expensive for the amount of energy
being saved.
Another possible design feature is to make the roofs of
homes covered up with solar panels which will supply the
required energy. But there is a problem with the usage of
solar energy; it is not a reliable source of energy as it is a
climate & weather dependent source of energy.
There are mechanisms to procure energy from waste.
People should be educated & encouraged to use such
techniques. We should always turn off the electrical devices
when not in use. The devices should not even be on the
standby mode as they consume some energy even on that
mode. Four or five devices left on standby in a household is

33. equivalent of leaving an electric light on permanently. We
should also focus on using energy-efficient devices.
It is possible to build houses that need no energy & many
such houses have been built mainly in Germany &
Australia.
The design features often include:
• High levels of insulation.
• Airtight construction.
• High insulation windows (using reflective glass).
• Solar panels to produce electricity and to heat water
pipes.
• A ground heat exchanger to capture heat from lower
levels in the ground.
• Use of heat exchanger to capture excessive heat
produced by the occupants.
Organic wastes & domestic wastes can be used to produce
methane gas by using bacteria. Methane gas is a great
source of energy & it can not only be used to generate
electricity but also can be used to cook food. The
composted waste can then be used on land to improve soil
structure. It’s been well said that energy cannot be created
but you know what it can be destroyed. So, we must know
how to save it.
Not only energy resources but water is equally important to
us & our environment. We may have a lot of water on the
Earth but water which is really useful is just 0.3% of the
entire available water. Rainwater harvesting, reuse of used
water should be encouraged.
Above mentioned all the procedures are only possible, if we
educate the masses or maybe introduce these methods in the
courses that students study. If the world comes together the
energy consumption can surely be reduced.

35. any students have to juggle their social
Mand personal lives, school, and work,
which can feel overwhelming at times.
Sometimes students have to sacrifice their personal
interests and goals in order to excel in the career
and educational front. But, by following certain
techniques, they can make sure that their personal
and school lives are in sync, and they can work
towards their career development.
Following the Syllabus
At the beginning of the session, students may feel
that the final exams are far away and they can relax
a bit before getting on with the studies. But they
should be careful and prepare themselves because
before they can even realize, the exams will be
knocking at the door and they won’t have the time
left to study and revise later.
Students should follow the syllabus and slowly
start catching up with all the subjects and topics.
This will help them during the finals, realizing that
they have covered most of the topics during the
sessions. As a result, they will feel relieved and
will get the time to revise important topics.
Additionally, they should keep a record of
important deadlines and maintain reminders, which
will help them to keep track of important
assignments and due dates.
Maintaining Weekly Goals
Students should plan out the important tasks that
they want to accomplish in the upcoming week.
Those who are both working and pursuing a course
at the same time should make a note of essential
tasks to be accomplished at work and school. This
will help them to achieve the goals in a systematic
way.
Managing Adequate Time for Studying
For working people, it gets tougher if they only
have a few hours to prepare for the sessions. In
such cases, they should plan ahead of time, which
will help them manage time for their studies, no
matter how busy their schedule is.
Overcoming Procrastination is Essential
One can come up with a million excuses to delay
their mood. But, due to heavy workload and the
objective of completing the course in time,
students often do not get the adequate amount of
sleep. If students take some time out to improve
the quality of sleep, it will help them in reducing
the stress levels to a minimum. As result, they will
be able to think more clearly and make fewer
errors in study and work.
Prioritizing the Work
Students should arrange things in a meaningful
way to make sure that the projects, assignments,
papers, or other activities are completed in time.
But, sometimes the final exams sneak up on us. To
avoid such occurrences, students should regularly
check the syllabus and measure how different
assignments are weighted. They should focus on
the importance of each subject or assignment, and
complete them as per the priority. Completing
minor subjects and assignments will boost their
confidence and help them to tackle rest of the
syllabus with ease.
Make time for Self Care
It is essential for students to make time for their
mental and physical well-being. They should set
aside the stress related to studies & work and
spend some quality time with friends and family.
Even taking some time out just to relax and have a
good time is also necessary. Students should figure
out some way to relax, refresh their mind, and treat
themselves once they have completed the
important tasks.
In this highly competitive world, it is very
challenging for individuals to maintain a healthy
balance between their work and studies. However,
following the aforementioned techniques can be
helpful for them to perform well in the
professional arena and the field of education, all
the while maintaining a healthy personal life.

Eand so has the definition of parenting. The number
of students applying for higher education in
reputable colleges has increased gradually and the college
expenses are soaring high. This situation of cut-throat
competition brings tremendous stress for the students. At
such times, parents can help students relieve the stress and
assist them in preparing for college. They should make sure
that the students are always at the driver’s seat and should
take major decisions themselves. Parents should always
support their wards throughout their academic tenure so that
they can give their best and build a bright career pathway
for themselves.
Parents can help prepare their wards for schools and
colleges in the below-mentioned ways:
Gather Information about Scholarships
Parents can assist students to search for scholarships. There
are various scholarship opportunities available online.
Parents can spend some time browsing the internet and
search for scholarships fit for their ward. They can search
based on the student’s interests and qualifications, and pass
on the necessary information to the student.
Provide Information and Tips Related to Interviews
Providing various tips to the students can come in handy
while appearing for interviews. Parents can advise them
about the dress code of such occasions. Moreover, sharing
interview tips and words of advice can also be helpful. They
should always encourage the students to maintain a positive

College Choice and College Visits
Although choice of college should always be left to the
student, but parents can always offer their inputs and advice
along the way. Keeping in mind the financial requirements
and availabilities, they can always guide and advice their
children which institution will be feasible from both the
educational and financial perspective. They can also
accompany students on college visits, while allowing them
to take the lead. Parents should listen to every conversation
carefully, take notes, and even pictures, which will help in
the information gathering process. They can also schedule
multiple visits to the college, which can be helpful to the
student.
Constant Involvement is Essential
The educational development of any students demands
complete dedication on the part of the parents. They should
maintain regular interaction with the teachers to keep a
track on their ward’s curricular and extra-curricular
development. Many institutions offer developmental
programs which provide insights on a student’s overall
development.
Preparing Young Students for School
Many parents, whose wards are yet to join school, can
instill positive ideas about school and prepare them for
excelling in studies. Children should be nurtured right from
an early age so that they gain better experiences in
preschool or kindergarten. Parents can use the below
mentioned methods to educate their children to successfully
start their academic career.
Supporting Literacy from an Early Age
Parents should read educative materials to their children
every day. As the children grow, they should inculcate the
habit of reading good books among them. It is very
important to keep educative books in the house, on the book
shelf, and besides tables. It will cultivate the habit of
reading among the children. Parents should also take their
children often to libraries. This will give them necessary
exposure to a variety of educative books, which will be
beneficial for their knowledge growth.
Adding Variety into Study and Music
Parents can seek help from the librarian and collect a
variety of books on various topics suitable for their child.
They can also expose them to various types of music. This
will encourage children to participate actively in reading
different books and listening to different types of music.
Making Learning a Fun Experience
Parents can introduce innovation in their children’s
education and make it a worthwhile experience. They can
ask their children to count, name colors, and find letters of
the alphabet in funny and unexpected places like cereal
boxes, newspaper, bottles, and so on and deliver an
exceptional learning curve. This will develop children’s
interest in studies and nurture their creativity. As a result,
they will look for practicing more of such activities to
enhance learning.
It is Important to be a Role Model
Parents can share their workplace experience with the
children. They can read educative books regularly and tell
their ward what they learnt in the office. Parents can carry
out activities at home like reading and exercising regularly,
watching news, and eating healthy food. This will motivate
children to participate in such activities and will help in
developing a positive outlook.
Making Social Connections
Parents can coordinate and arrange social gatherings for the
students. They can collaborate and conduct various events
for young children. Spending time with each other will help
children to develop social and emotional skills. It will
prepare children for the school environment. Moreover,
after interacting with each other, parents will also develop
new ideas to be involved in their ward’s education.
Educational institutions are the doorway to transforming a
student into furnished responsible professional of the
nation. However, parents have the primary responsibility to
prepare their children mentally and physically, and
encourage them to study and work hard to make their mark
in this highly competitive world. They need to be
completely involved in their child’s educational activities to
ensure a successful career for them. Ensuring the child’s
dedicated literacy and commitment to learning plays an
indispensible role towards their academic and career
development.

43. he vital importance of having mastery over the
Tlingua franca i.e. English, the inter-national
language of the world, to succeed in this era of
globalization cannot be over emphasized. It is a fact that
several bright students from even very good medical and
engineering colleges in India are not able to progress in
their careers only because of the lack of communication
skills and command of English. On the other hand,
academically very average students are able to go much
ahead and become decision makers at a young age due to
their mastery over English.
Though English is not the most spoken language in the
world, it is the official language of the world. Most
technical/scientific journals that are of immense importance
to the community of scientists, engineers and doctors are in
English. Communication among business leaders and
executives of different countries is predominantly in
English. When one accesses the internet, most of the
information is in English. Research conducted in
universities in countries like US and UK and their findings
are in English.
The importance of English language and its widespread use
as a global lingua franca has increased due to globalization.
For the past several decades, USA and UK have held sway
over international relations and global diplomacy. This has
made sure the acceptance of English as the chief language
spoken in several nations. Diplomats and other senior
officials of nations whose native language is not English are
learning English so as to be able to understand and
appreciate the finer points in global diplomacy.
With the constantly evolving technology in the
telecommunications and IT enabled services sectors, and
the giant contribution made by Indians in the global
software and computer arena, those Indian techies who are
well versed in English, stand to benefit tremendously from
the myriad opportunities. Indians abroad are shouldering
key responsibilities in large corporations as much due to
their mastery over English as over their technical expertise.
All over the world, speaking English immediately opens up
opportunities. Being able to communicate with foreign
clients and business partners will provide an edge over
others for better positions in one’s career. English is thus a
medium of communication in international trade. The
knowledge of English is imperative in India to
communicate and for transactions in inter-state business.
Thousands of citizens of developing countries including
India are migrating every year to US in search of better
fortunes either through admissions for higher studies or on
work permits. For international careers in engineering,
medicine, aviation and education, good knowledge of
English is a must. In order to make a success of their
dreams in the land of opportunities, it is essential that they
possess a good knowledge of English. The world has
become a global village and the significance of English
cannot be overemphasized. Due to the latest technology,
communications and the internet, all countries are coming
closer. Information is shared instantly and almost all of
these are through the English language, which is ensuring
that the countries come virtually closer.
English is the medium of communication in the
technologically advanced countries of the world. In the best
universities for higher education which are mainly in the
US, English is used as the scientific language for inventions
and discoveries. There is a beeline by engineers and other
professionals from all over the world including India for
pursuing higher studies in US. As part of the admission
process of most US universities, engineering graduates and
graduates in other fields intending to pursue MS or PhD
have to appear for an exam known as GRE (Graduate
Record Examination). The GRE tests the students’
Quantitative abilities and Verbal abilities in English. In
addition, the aspirants are tested in Analytical Writing.
They are also required to appear for the TOEFL (Test of
English as a Foreign Language). Some American
universities may ask aspirants for admission, to write the
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
instead of TOEFL. The aspirants for higher studies are also
required to write a Statement of Purpose, giving their career
goals and analyzing their academic and professional
achievements. Professionals seeking admission for MBA
education in US schools of management have to appear for
the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) and are
also tested in Analytical Writing. They have also to answer
some questions put forth by the business schools as part of
their application for admission. These require a fairly high
level of knowledge of English, especially in the top US
universities and management schools.
Apart from US, students also go for further education to
countries like UK, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, etc,
where English is the medium of instruction as also the
mode of communication. Thus it is up to parents, educators
and policy makers to encourage the students to study
English from a young age, for their own future and for the
progress of our Nation.

48. ne thing that the students wait throughout the
Osemester is the holiday breaks. After months of
studies and hard work, they plan to rest and spend
some leisure time at home, or go for a holiday trip. Many of
them do not want to engage in anything else, rather than
sleeping and watching their favorite shows and films. But,
instead of spending most of the time in leisure, students can
also engage in various productive activities.
All of us want to enjoy and have a great time during the
holidays. It is the time when we want to catch up on all the
things that we have missed during the semester. This does
not mean that we cannot sleep, or have fun. But, making
time for activities which are beneficial for our educational
and career growth can help us in the future.
Preparing a Schedule for the Next Semester
Students can plan for the upcoming semesters. This will
make things easier for them and they will be ready for the
next semester. They can check out which subjects will be
covered and plan their studies accordingly. Moreover,
knowledge of the subjects can help students to manage their
studies as per the importance of the subject.
Building a Strong Resume
Students can take up internships with various companies
and institutions to hone their skills. This will provide them a
basic idea about the industry. It will also boost their
confidence, enhance their skills, and broaden their
knowledge about the industry or sector they are interested
in. Pursuing internships is very important for students who
are in the last semester of their degree course and are
looking for potential employment opportunities. It will also
nurture their professional skills and get their resume in
shape.
Engaging in Creative Activities
Spending the holidays by performing activities involving
art, craft, and creativity can also be very useful for students.
Individuals with flair in cookery can prepare various dishes,
cakes, sweets, and other desserts. Others can also engage in
music, dance, skits, and other such activities to cultivate
their creative side.
Nurturing the Healthy Side
It is very difficult for students to perform exercise and
conduct healthy activities when colleges and schools are on.

49. Many students engage in unhealthy snacking;
even if many students try to maintain a
healthy diet, it becomes very difficult to
maintain the same during semesters. Hence,
during holidays, students can carry out
various exercises, eat healthy food, and also
play various outdoor games. This will not
only make them healthy, but will also lift
their mood, enhance their concentration, and
foster team work among them. During
holidays, students can also go for long walks
and trekking with their friends and family,
which will be beneficial for their health.
Participating in Group Activities
Group activities nurture teamwork, and foster
a sense of mutual respect and understanding
among individuals. During holidays, students
can take part in various cultural activities like
group dances and songs. They can also take
part in team sports like football and cricket.
Also, parents should motivate the students to
participate in various events like youth
parliament, skits, debate sessions, and so on.
Carrying out such activities will help in
building the students’ confidence and
contribute in their personality development.
Preparing for Competitive Exams
Holidays are the best time for students to
plan for their career growth. Competitive
exams are lucrative options for students to
pursue a respectable job in government and
private sectors. When schools and colleges
are closed, students can devote their time to
study and prepare for competitive exams.
Ambitious students can concentrate more on
studies and research, rather than spending
time on leisure and entertainment.
Conducting Get Together Parties
‘All work and no play makes jack a dull boy’,
is a proverb which goes well for everyone,
especially students. If students engage in
studies all the time, then they will feel bored
and lose concentration. Parents should assist
students in conducting get together parties, where they can meet,
interact, and have a good time with their friends. This will not only act
as a means of entertainment and recreation, but also will allow
students to socialize and know each other better.
Volunteering
During their holidays, students can also volunteer for a social cause or
participate in various extra-curricular activities. They can look around
their community and take part in various activities which are not only
educative and entertaining, but are also beneficial for the society and
the country, for example, participating in a tree plantation campaign,
or donating alms to the needy.
Holidays are the times when students want to take rest and engage in
fun activities. But, if students mange the time to carry out the above
mentioned productive activities, it will be beneficial to them both
academically and from their career viewpoint. T R
