Treasure Hunts at the Library: Raiders of the Lost (AR)k

  1. 1. Development The activity can be used with any class: • Student Development: Introduction to library spaces/resources • English & Public Speaking: Databases, Catalog, Citation, Evaluation • 200-level courses: Specific databases & LibGuides • ESL: Vocabulary questions about the library Application Variations Set up two Aurasma accounts. The one for the iPads will “follow” the creator account to recognize the trigger images. Give each group an extra iPad with a Padlet board open, so they can submit photo, video, or text answers. Review the Padlet boards in the classroom after everyone returns. Save the Padlets as images to send to the teacher afterward! Make it a self-guided activity by leaving maps & instructions at your Welcome Desk and offer it as a fun Welcome Week activity, extra credit for a class, or as a contest! Both apps are free for both Apple & Android. Padlet is also browser-based. Both require Wi-Fi to work. Alex Harrington, aharrington@tcc.edu Garrison Libby, alibby@tcc.edu Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach Trigger Overlay On iPad Adding augmented reality (AR) to library instruction scavenger hunts brings an interactive element to the activity that engages students and encourages them to see the library as a fun place. Give each group of students an iPad, and they follow a map of stops in the library. Each stop has an image to scan using Aurasma (an AR app), revealing an overlay of content. Use the graphics program of your choice to create a “trigger” image for each stop on the map. Then create an “overlay” image for each trigger. When the students scan the trigger with their iPads, the overlay appears! Upload them to Aurasma.com.
