However, this is a growing and vulnerable population with increasing risks for
abuse and neglect.

 More than 40% of nursing home residents have reported abuse.
 According to a 2012 government study, 85 percent of nursing homes reported
some sort of abuse.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS I NEED TO CONSIDER?
Nursing home abuse, neglect and injuries can be caused by a wide array
of circumstances. The most common include:
 Understaffing.
A facility’s staffing levels are rated by
Medicare. Staffing levels are directly related
to quality of care and patient injury risk.
 Medication Use.
Patients’ medications can have side effects
that increase the risk for falls or other
injuries. Stay informed about current
medications, dosages, drug interactions and
side effects.
Some facilities may accidently, or
intentionally, overmedicate a patient. Heavy
sedation can be a warning sign of other risks.
 Other Residents.
Up to 20% of nursing home residents have
reported aggressive or hostile behavior from
another resident. Other patients may have
cognitive disorders and/or pharmacological
causes for their behavior. Ultimately, staff
are responsible for protecting all patients.
 Failure of Management
A nursing home may fail to properly consider
background checks for staff; may not provide
adequate training; may neglect drug testing
and miss employee drug use, among other
things.

 Bed sores or pressure ulcers
 Unexplained marks, cuts and bruises
 Unexplained broken bones
 Dehydration, weight loss and hunger
 Sepsis or severe infection
 Patient withdrawn or depressed
 Unsanitary living conditions
 Personal items or money disappearing
 Staff restricting patient access
 Injuries requiring hospital or emergency
room care
 Injuries by another resident
 Resident heavily sedated or medicated
 Unexplained death

WHAT SHOULD I DO?
It is cruel and unreasonable to subject loved ones that took care of us when we
were young to abuse or neglect when they need help, especially from a $100
billion industry to whom we have given our trust.
If you are concerned that a loved one, or other resident, is being harmed

 If someone is in immediate danger, call 911 or the local police.
 The Arizona Department of Health Services provides an online form for filing a
complaint.
 Contact the Adult Protective Services Central Intake Unit.
 Call your Local Area Agency on Aging
