7. WHAT IS SKETCHUP?
Sketchup is the first FREE open-sourced software to
design professional 3D and 2D models
K-12 Education users can choose between Sketchup
Free Version and Sketchup Pro (free for educators and
affordable for students/schools)
Sketchup Plus version costs money
Students can use in class and download at home.
Google has owned it for many years but it is now
owned by Trimble (name transition is happening now) .
11. LESSON IDEAS USING SKETCHUP
3D Geometric Shapes
Geography
Architecture
Mathematical
Vocabulary: vertices,
edge, points, midpoint,
radius, center,
diameter, sides
Second Grade - making
houses (2d to 3d
shapes), circles
12. LESSON IDEAS USING SKETCHUP
All grades - Open AR
models connecting
geography, history, &
historical monuments
All grades - 3D
geometric shapes
(finding them in the AR
models and drawing
them)
Use for parent night-
Math night, Technology
Night, Evening with the
Arts, etc
13. CONNECTIONS TO THE
MA CURRICULUM FRAMEWORKS
Grade Two
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes,
such as a given number of angles or a given number of
equal faces.
Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons,
and cubes.
Sizes are compared directly or visually, not compared by
measuring.
Grade Three
Recognize perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and
distinguish between linear and area measures .
(Geometric measurement)
14. WHAT ABOUT UPPER GRADES?
Billerica High School students use Sketchup in
engineering/architecture class
Look at the online gallery of students worldwide
who are creating content in Sketchup

15. SHOWING 3D MODELS IN AR
What is AR (Augmented Reality)?
One of the latest AND exciting technology ideas.
Augmented Reality uses built in web cameras to create the
illusion of a hologram with certain 3D programs and websites.
For example a 3D model you may see on the screen can
suddenly appear to be sitting in your hand.
Using AR with Sketchup can give you the feeling of “holding”
your model in your hand
Use the AR Sketchup plugin
Check out other AR sites with your

18. USING 3D WAREHOUSE
Google 3D Warehouse has models of a zillion things
– these can be used in Sketchup only.

19. INSTALLATION NUTS AND BOLTS
PC and Mac Compatible
There are a bunch of steps to get this
working… see our handout.
Print the markers on card stock or use
clipboards.
iPad, iPhone,& iTouch AR technology exists
Go to the App store and type in “Augmented
Reality”
20. YOU CAN DO IT!
You can do it! Follow our instructions for installation.
