Joy Cadwallader of Aberystwyth University discusses achieving accurate statistics on uptake of the Aspire reading list project. The purpose was to motivate stakeholders, produce timely data, and compare uptake across departments. Data needed included total modules and published reading lists by department. Over two years, published lists increased from 50% of modules to over 90% and library satisfaction also increased. Future goals include 100% published lists with focus on quality and quantitative success measures.

21. We remembered that nothing is ever that straight-forward!
We learned more about how universities and this University works
We made new and helpful contacts in our own and other departments
Other people may be trying to do what you are trying to do, perhaps for
different reasons.
What we gained
22. 100% published lists!
Focus on list and item quality
correct metadata to ensure successful acquisition and
digitisation, regular list update/refreshment, new
editions etc.
Quantitative success measures for the same
What’s next with statistics?
Aberystwyth is an ambitious university in a fantastic location on the cardiganshire riviera “where the mountains meet the sea”
Founded in 1872 and one of the first universities to admit women,
Very interested in your experiences
Legacy system, home made, low take up, data not imported

Investment PVC, Students!
Academic board / LTEC / TELG
Meet accreditation and QAA requirements
Extra – “bedrock” statistcs to support future stats needs
Graphs created from published lists totals added to a spreadsheet from the ALL LISTS Report in Aspire
Applications and Integrations team (previously Library systems) the same staff as maintain our Blackboard integration
End of august, after resits are finished
Generate a spreadsheet of modules from the Astra system indication N for suspended, X for withdrawn
We checked these against the Aspire to locate any that had published lists and archived them, recording the action as we go
We let our colleague know when the archiving is complete and he removes all the module codes from the hierarchy
Staff can check a list for archived versions of module reading lists and request them to be re-instated
So job done yes?
No, there’s more
Academic Engagement colleagues discovered that there were many modules for which a reading list was not required.
University Librarain Julie Hart negotiated with our colleagues in the Astra team to a box in the Astra module form to indicate that a reading list was not needed
These are now included in the hierarchy prune and won’t come back through the hierarchy upload
So why were there 93 modules not correctly marked in Astra just a few weeks after we had done our annual prune
We discovered that our colleagues in the E-learning team had the same issue in trying to measure the uptake of their lecture recording mandate
Kate Wright who leads their team arranged a meeting with AQRO, the university’s quality assurance agency who are responsible for the Academic Quality handbooks
Like all academic libraries, we are on a persistent journey of forever improving our services to meet the changing need of our students and staff. Our reading list service probably can’t take the credit for all of the 6% improvement on last year – but I think we can take some of it!
Aber has also been shortlisted in the most improved student experience category in the Times Higher education awards 2016
