  2. 2. About UEL • 19,000 students from 120 countries • 3 campuses, one shared with Birkbeck • 2 campus libraries, the newest opened in June 2013 • 120 staff in Library and Learning Services
  3. 3. About the ‘Free books’ scheme • In 2011, UEL started giving free core texts (one per module) to all undergraduate students • Scheme in collaboration with John Smiths • Driven by Office for Fair Access Funding • Logistical challenges
  4. 4. About free tablets • BYOD support within the Libraries • Library blended learning project with Law School in 2013 • Loanable tablets subsequently available in both Libraries • High take-up by students
  5. 5. Free Books Replacement Project – 2014 • Feasibility study into current processes • Decision taken to provide all new, first year, students with tablets providing access to one core text for each module • Choice between Kortext and Vital Source as eBook app provider • Negotiation with publishers on electronic title availability

The device and content delivery • 4300 Samsung Note 8 tablets distributed in September and October 2014 • Devices skinned and providing UEL apps (including the new Library app, which provides library search and access to online help services) • eBooks available through the Kortext app, or online • eBooks available for students in perpetuity • Module leaders and other staff given devices for teaching, learning and support purposes.
  7. 7. Kortext • Separate login credentials • Adobe ID also required • Books accessed through bookshelf • Books and app can be downloaded to any device, but some other products required (eg. Adobe Digital Editions) • Functionality within app includes note making, highlighting and bookmarking
  8. 8. Library Support • Staff nominated as project champions - attended early training • First line help and support provided at library help desks and via roving staff • Subject Librarians introduced the tablet and Kortext e books at library induction • Pop-up Librarian scheme – out and about

Challenges • Information overload for students • Lack of single sign on • Kortext app is still unstable • The UEL skin on the tablets has caused some problems • Browser issues • Communication issues leading to unsatisfactory student and staff experience • Teaching and Learning aspects not fully explored
  10. 10. Future developments • Learning and teaching aspects to be developed further • Project team to include academics and led by Centre for Excellence in L&T • New year, new device • Student feedback • Possible efficiency savings being investigated by LLS
