A. European Society
For hundreds of
years, Europe was
ruled by the Roman Empire.
3. When the Roman Empire fell apart around
500 A.D., Europe was left disorganized and
isolated.
This period was known as the Middle Ages.
The Black Plague occurred
during this time.
Bad sanitary conditions
caused an increase in rats.
The plague virus was
passed from fleas,
to rats, then to humans.
4. To organize society, the system of
feudalism was developed.
Feudalism - a system in which a king gives
out parts of his lands to nobles in
exchange for their
loyalty.
These lands were farmed
by peasants or serfs.
5. Religion
The central authority in the Middle
Ages was the Roman Catholic Church.
Why was religion so important to
society in the Middle Ages?

6. B. Causes of Exploration
Europe began coming out of its isolation
around 1100.
1. The Crusades
Series of Holy Wars,
lasting hundreds of years.
The European Christians attempted to
take the Holy Lands (Middle East) from
the Muslims.

8. The Crusades were a failure, yet had
many positive effects on Europe.
The Crusades brought
Europe out of isolation
and into contact with
other parts of the world.
They exposed Europeans
to Asian goods such
as spices and silks.
9. Europeans soon wanted to find a faster,
easier, way to get to Asia.
2. New States Emerge
Feudalism began to decline.
Powerful rulers emerged
who united many kingdoms
into strong and powerful
countries.
10. Soon, four strong countries existed:
Portugal, France, Spain, and England.
These countries would compete for
trade and power.
12. 3. The Renaissance
Literally means rebirth.
A new interest in art,
culture, writing, science,
etc.
This fueled the desire for
exploration to learn and trade
with other cultures.

is considered the father of exploration.

to plan expeditions.
Goal: To find a water route to Asia.
