How can we quickly tell what an application is about? How can we quickly tell what it does? How can we distinguish business concepts from architecture clutter? How can we quickly find the code we want to change? How can we instinctively know where to add code for new features? Purely looking at unit tests is either not possible or too painful. Looking at higher-level tests can take a long time and still not give us the answers we need. For years, we have all struggled to design and structure projects that reflect the business domain. In this talk Sandro will be sharing how he designed the last application he worked on, twisting a few concepts from Domain-Driven Design, properly applying MVC, borrowing concepts from CQRS, and structuring packages in non-conventional ways. Sandro will also be touching on SOLID principles, Agile incremental design, modularisation, and testing. By iteratively modifying the project structure to better model the product requirements, he has come up with a design style that helps developers create maintainable and domain-oriented software.

Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and Functional Programming (FP) have a lot of good things in common: DDD has borrowed many ideas from the FP community, and both share a common inspiration on established formalisms like maths. For the software developer, the result is a style of code that mixes the best of DDD, OO and FP. Even in non functional languages like Java or C#, this combined set of practices helps craft simple and powerful code that reads well and that is very easy to test. In this talk we will have a closer look at some of these ideas, in the context of domain models inspired from real-world projects. From basic FP hygiene like immutability and closure of operations to more mathematical inspirations from abstract algebra like monoids, we will show how all that translates into beautiful code. We all have a burning desire to write clean code. Every morning we wake up, look in the mirror, and promise ourselves that today we will follow the principles and best practices learned from Uncle Bob and his disciples. But we live in a cruel environment, surrounded by millions of smelly lines of code, reflections of a stinky design… and these constantly challenge our pure-hearted desire for writing clean code. In such an environment, the stubbornness to practice daily the writing of clean code is vital. But is it enough? Can we avoid getting lost in a sea of smelly code and design? In this talk I will try to persuade you that, in dealing with large-scale systems, craftsmanship must be supported by proper techniques and tools that can help us to quickly understand, assess and improve the sea of smelly design that surrounds us. I will present a pragmatic approach on how design anti-patterns (e.g. God Class, Feature Envy, Refused Bequest, Shotgun Surgery) can be automatically detected using a set of metrics-based detection rules, by analyzing the history of the system, and by using intriguing software visualizations. The presentation will also include a live demo of tools that can automate the entire approach to a high-extent. These tools are so robust that they can deal with systems of several million lines of code; but they are also friendly enough to provide you with customized hints that help you deal with each and every case of an “unclean” code.

Manual testing is most often done end-to-end. Tests are performed through the user interface. When testing gets automated, this is where most organisations start. They start with automating the way they do things now. The new way is faster, but it isn’t fast enough. And not robust enough. It is unnecessarily complicated to understand why an end-to-end test fails. There are usually many different possibilities when something doesn’t work. The number of possible paths through a reasonably large application will very fast make it impossible to cover them all. Combinatorics is your enemy. The solution is to minimise the tests that passes through many layers in your application. Minimising doesn’t mean removing the end-to-end tests. They are still needed. But much fewer than most organisations seem to think. I will show you why the testing pyramid need to be very wide. You will understand why this is an absolute necessity if all possible paths through the application should be tested. In other words, let me show you why your tests must be very shallow.

A Walking Skeleton has been described by Alistair Cockburn as 'a tiny implementation of the system that performs a small end-to-end function. It need not use the final architecture, but it should link together the main architectural components. The architecture and the functionality can then evolve in parallel.' It is also the theme of the popular book 'Growing Object Orientated Software Guided by Tests' by Steve Freeman and Nat Pryce. In this session Thomas will start with a clean development environment and develop a walking skeleton for an application. The skeleton will evolve and parts will be added as we gather more and more knowledge about the system we are building. This will demonstrate how Acceptance Test Driven Development (ATDD) and Test Driven Development (TDD) can be used to drive the development of a Walking Skeleton, keep it running, and grow it incrementally.

Data spaces in distributed environments should be allowed to evolve in agile ways providing data space owners with large flexibility about which data they store. Agility and heterogeneity, however, jeopardize data exchanges because representations may build on varying ontologies and data consumers may not rely on the semantic correctness of their queries in the context of semantically heterogeneous, evolving data spaces. Graph data spaces are one example of a powerful model for representing and querying data whose semantics may change over time. To assert and enforce conditions on individual graph data spaces, shape languages (e.g SHACL) have been developed. We investigate the question of how querying and programming can be guarded by reasoning over SHACL constraints in a distributed setting and we sketch a picture of how a future landscape based on semantically heterogeneous data spaces might look like.
