GENDER -WORD
Sexologist JOHN MONEY introduced the
terminological distinction between biological
SEX AND GENDER AS A ROLE in 1955.

GENDER
Gender refers to the socially constructed
identities of men and women such as norms ,
roles and relationships between groups of
women and men.

cultural and
personal. They
determine how
male and females
should think,
speak, dress, and
interact within the
context of society.

knowledge shared by a relatively large group
of people(men and women-Gender).

CONSTRAINTS-LIMIT (or) CONTROL
Cultural constraints-Prescriptive(People should
do certain things) or Proscriptive (People
should not do certain things)

GENDER ROLES-IN CULTURE
Gender roles vary – culture
It is mainly based on the culture and
historical background of people living in
a region
While analyzed-cultural environment of
people living in a region.

CORE-CULTURE
Culture is the whole complex of distinctive material,
intellectual, emotional, and spiritual features
Culture include not only arts and literature.
It includes life style of a social group, basic
human rights, value system, traditions and beliefs.
Cultural environments may give more important
for gender equality, some other cultures may be
reluctant to accept gender equality.

TCHAMBULI CULTURE

GENDER ROLES IN-DIFFERENT
CULTURES
The famous anthropologist, MARGARET MEAD
People-NEW GUINEA –Gender roles are developed
only on the basis of the biological nature of sexes.
New guinea-TCHAMBULI CULTURE – The role and
functions of women activities that control the economy-
fishing, production of goods.
Developing sexual relations with men-women only take
initiatives.
Men belonging to TCHAMBULI culture-dependent on
women, they often adore themselves with flowers and
jewelry.

CULTURE AND SOCIALIZATION
According to MARGARET MEAD and other
sociologists came to the conclusion: culture
and socialization-gender issues

JAPAN-GENDER ROLE AND
ISSUES
Women are well educated and employed with
good jobs, earning high salary.
Selecting their lifemate, the social pressure
related to gender roles exert a huge impact.
In 1946-japanese constitution revised a set of
laws- granting women all possible rights.

RIGHTS FOR WOMEN
Right of women to own property
Right of women to inherit family property
Right of women to marry and divorce
Right of women to become a parent
Right of women to vote in elections

GENDER INEQUALITY-IN JAPAN
Do not have barrier for equal participation in
social and professional life.
Gender inequality continues in family life, work
place and popular values.
To carry her children and that of society
Stay at home and devote herself to her children
Women manage the family budget, take important
decisions-education for children, professional
careers.

WOMEN AS A-MODELS
Women in western cultures have been in the
forefront in science, research, adventures,
creativity
In this culture women were treated as
EXHIBITS, MODELS to popularise new
products and as instigators of lust.

MIDDLE EASTERN COUNTRY
MIDDLE EASTERN:
Women do not have
voting rights.
GENDER ISSUES:
In developing country like
India, women cannot
demand for
coeducation, equal
rights and freedom to
choose their lifestyle.

Murdering and throwing acid on the girl who
rejects the love-proposal of a person
Rape
Sexual violence on women
Killing one’s own mother

Denying equal share for women in inheriting

Men unilaterally announcing divorce-small

marriage , Men carrying a knife in their
turbans, no facility for women to breast feed
her child, men -polygamy
