By Which to Live Life
• Money kept in the banks
may not be really yours.
When it is time to spend,
just spend. Treat yourself
well as you’re getting old.
• Treat sickness with
optimism. Whether you are
poor or rich, everyone has
to go through birth, aging,
sickness and death. There
is no exception, that’s life!
• Do not be afraid or worried
when you are sick. Settle
all the outstanding issues
beforehand and you will
be able to leave without
regret!
• Let the doctors handle your
body, let GOD/NATURE
handle your life, but be in
charge of your own moods.
• Our kids will make their
own fortune.
• Look after four old
treasures:
       1. Your old body: pay more
       attention to health, you can
only rely on yourself in this.
       2. Retirement funds: money
that you have earned, it is
       best to keep them yourself.
       3. Your old companion:
       treasure every moment with
M
ost of us are
regular users of the
Internet. We get
bombarded with
lots of communications that
we neither wanted nor needed.
A number of them might be
categorized as “feel good”
messages that are filled with
beautiful pictures and well-
intentioned thoughts; I tend to
discard many of them without
looking at them.
But occasionally one attracts
my attention and that is just
what happened a couple of
weeks ago as I was thinking
about what I could say in
this column to convince my
congregation to truly live life!
Someone sent me a power-
point presentation entitled
“The Secrets of Old Age” and
it is addressed to “All Retired
Friends.” Here are some of the
words that accompanied some
soothing music and some very
lovely photos:
“Secrets of life in 6 words:”
Before Middle Age: Do not
fear!
After Middle Age: Do not
regret!
• Enjoy your life while you
can. Do not wait until you
cannot even work just to be
sorry and to regret!
• As long as it is physically
possible, visit places you
wish to visit.
• When there is an
opportunity, get together
with old classmates, old
colleagues and old friends.
The gathering is not just
about eating; it’s just that
there isn’t much time left.
your other half, one of you
       will leave first!
       4. Your old friends: seize
       every opportunity to meet
       up with your old friends.
       Such opportunities will
become rare as time goes by.
• Things you must do every
day: Smile and laugh.
• Running water does not
flow back. So is life, make
it happy.

7:30pm
Featuring Dr. Grady Ballenger
Dean of Students at Stetson University
who will introduce the historic documentary
“NIGHT AND FOG”
Program Sponsored by
Grady Ballenger is Professor of English and Dean of the College of
Arts & Sciences at Stetson University. His graduate work in literature
was completed at Columbia University and University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. His teaching interests include documentary
and narrative film and the ways that Hollywood films, in particular,
recreate historical traumas like the Holocaust.
Ten years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps,
filmmaker Alain Resnais documented the abandoned grounds of
Auschwitz and Majdanek. One of the first cinematic reflections on
the horrors of the Holocaust, NIGHT AND FOG contrasts the stillness
of the abandoned camps’ quiet, empty buildings with haunting
wartime footage. With NIGHT AND FOG, Resnais investigates the
cyclical nature of man’s violence toward man and presents the
unsettling suggestion that such horrors could come again.

I
t amazes me how quickly
the year flies by. With
the Thanksgiving and
Chanukah season right
around the corner, it
reminds me how grateful I
am for my family and friends,
while at the same time keeping
in mind those who are less
fortunate.
October ends each year
with the youth groups’
Trick-or-Treat-for-Hunger
program, collecting food for
the Federation’s Jerry Doliner
food pantry. This year was
no exception; we had another
successful food drive (thank you
to all who helped!).
However, I can’t help wonder
if it was enough. This is the
first year that I, personally,
know people who were going
hungry, who were going to food
banks and soup kitchens and
didn’t know where or if they
would celebrate Thanksgiving
this year. All this just brought
to mind that as Jews we have
the awesome opportunity and
responsibility to watch out for
each other.
In Torah, we recently read
about Cain and Abel and the
famous question; “Am I my
brother’s keeper?” The answer,
plain and simple, is yes. Yes,
we are. We have many choices
to make each and every day
‒ some simple and others not ‒
but nonetheless, they are there
to be made.
The first Wednesday of each
month we have a chance to
make a difference in someone
else’s life when we go and
volunteer at the homeless
coalition’s soup kitchen. The
choice to help is there and many
make that choice, but why make
an effort only then?
It seems as holidays
approach ‒ no matter whether
they are Jewish or secular ‒ we
all seem to get this extra urge
for giving. Not that this is a bad
thing, but why does it take a
holiday or holiday season to get
us in the mood to give or help
others?
Throughout the year, we
have many opportunities to
answer the question, “Am I my
brother’s keeper?” and set an
example for others to follow.
It can involve participating
in a social-action project or
volunteering around the Temple
in any capacity ‒ joining the
choir, getting involved in an
activity that is being run by
Sisterhood or Brotherhood
and supporting it, or getting
involved with something such
as the Jewish Heritage Festival
planning. These are but a few
ways we are our brother’s (and
sister’s) keepers.
What will you choose?
B’Yididut ‒ In friendship.

A
s Americans,
when we think
of November,
our thoughts
automatically
turn to Thanksgiving. And,
as American Jews, we have a
lot to be thankful for. As Jews,
except for the rare very early
Chanukah, we are in between
major holidays.
There are some special
days in history that deserve
our praise including the day
of the Balfour Declaration on
November 2, 1917, when the
British government formally
declared in favor of a Jewish
Homeland in Palestine (a
much larger area than present
day Israel) and November 29,
1947, the day of the UN vote
in favor of the partition of
Palestine leading the way to the
establishment of today’s Israel.
However, a review of history
does not reveal November to
generally be a kind month to
Jews. Perhaps most notably, we
recognize Kristallnacht during
this month.
This year, Dean Grady
Ballenger of Stetson University
will introduce and discuss the
move “Night & Fog” at Temple
Beth-El on November 9 at
7:30 p.m. The movie, a 1955
French short documentary
on Auschwitz and Majdanek,
reminds of the horrors of the
not too distant past.

Above, I have pointed out
some of the other “lowlights”
in Jewish history in November.
These dates and occurrences
remind us of the precious
nature of the freedoms we enjoy
as American Jews and of the
importance of the state of Israel,
especially at a time when our
own government doesn’t seem
to acknowledge and recognize
that importance.
So, in this American
month of Thanksgiving, let us
give thanks for our current
circumstances but remember to
“Never Forget.”

R
ecently, Murray and
I ate dinner at a local
Chinese restaurant,
and of course at the
end of our meal,
we received the mandatory
fortune cookie. Because our
ritual has always been to select
“our” cookie and read aloud
“our” personal fortune, we
enjoyed this task once more.
This statement was my fortune:
When weaving nets, all threads
count.
I immediately thought of my
grandmother who at age 95
learned to weave. When she
was proudly showing me the
process on a small tabletop
loom, I remembered her making
a similar observation, especially
the part about making sure you
knew the count.
It’s clear to me that this
statement not only applies
to weaving, but it is also
relevant to people. With that
relationship in mind, the
fortune statement might say:
When weaving networks, all
people count.
WRJ Sisterhood is a network
of women, and for me, all
members count. Each of our
members is as important as
the next, regardless of their

organizational title or of their

Sometimes in volunteer
organizations it is the few
who do the work of the many.
Because a Sisterhood member
does not have the ability to
participate, whatever the
reason, this does not mean
her significance within the
organization is lessened.
As the President of WRJ, I
believe it is my job to equally
honor each member because
by joining our group, this
member has given her implied
commitment to our mission and
to our goals.
Participation as a volunteer
is a choice of the heart, not an
obligation nor an expectation
that comes with joining. In this
organization as we continue
to weave our network, ALL

Don’t Forget about our Book Exchange!
T
here is so much
YOU can do with
your spare time to
help Temple Beth-
El. One hour a day
or one hour a week – however
much time you have would be
so gratefully appreciated. You
have so many choices, it’s hard
to decided what to do:
• Rabbi Altman needs help
with his video library – re-
catalogue videos, DVD’s,
CD’s and films – there may
be something hidden in
there we could use for the
Temple’s 60th anniversary.
• Cantor Zev is always
looking for helpers to
Feed the Homeless – first
Wednesday of every month.
• Cantor Zev also needs help
with the youth groups –
mailings, chaperoning,
phone calls, etc.
• Do you like children?
Would you be willing to
spend some time in the
classroom – maybe reading
to the children, grading
papers or just helping out?
If so, please call Malka
Altman at TBE School
• Therese could also use
some help with clerical
duties – making copies,
mailings, etc.
• Temple kitchen – would
you like to join a committee
to take care of the Friday
night Onegs – planning,
preparation and cleanup?
We definitely could use help
in this department. Maybe
you would like to sponsor
an Oneg or just bring a
dessert the next time
you come to Friday night
services.
• I’m sure no one will
volunteer for this , but it’s
important – DUST. It’s
always around and needs to
be taken care of. We take
care of our own homes, so
why not your home away
from home.
• Outside landscaping –
THANK YOU to Connor
Brok and his group of
volunteers for mulching
the playground and
surrounding areas in the
back of the Temple. They
did a great job! There
are still other areas
that could be done if
someone would like to
take the lead on mulching,
planting, weeding. A good
impression is always so
important.
Whatever you would like to
do – just let us know. There
are so many areas we could
use your help that aren’t even
listed. What would YOU like
to do? Call Therese at the
Temple office or myself and
VOLUNTEER! It’s the right
thing to do – and you’ll feel so
good that you did!

SHABBATON WEEKEND
WITH RABBI SHREIBER
Shabbaton weekend with
Rabbi Shreiber---we enjoyed his
visit last winter when he spoke
about the prophets. His subject
will be new this year and every
bit as interesting.
Thanks to Boy Scout Troop #468 our main entrance and our
big playground got a new overhaul recently. Connor Brok,
one of our Temple kids chose,
for his Eagle Scout project, the
renovation of our main en-
trance and playground. They
came with shovels, wheel bar-
rows, and manpower and, in 5
hours, transformed our weed
infested beds, and our play-
ground into something to be proud of. We thank Connor and
his troop for their hard work and dedication to beautifying
our main entrance, I’m sure you will notice the difference as
you drive by!
CONNOR BROK EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT
THANKS
I would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help
with my Eagle Scout Project at the Temple. Everyone
worked hard to mulch the playground and the main en-
trance. Monday Night School students planted flowers
and the interior courtyard looks more
inviting. Thank you to those who donat-
ed funds to help defray some of the
costs and the local businesses (Publix,
Krispy Kreme, Dominos, and Jersey
Mikes) that donated food and gift cards
to feed the volunteers. Special thanks
to the Waigand and Wagner families
for donating the flowers from their recent temple events.
They look great. I am grateful to the Temple and its mem-
bers for helping me get one step closer to achieving my
goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. l had a great time plan-
ning and carrying out my project. Connor Brok

We are writing
this in advance of the
Trick-or-Treat-for-
Hunger sponsored by Temple
Beth-El, Congregation B’Nai
Torah and Temple Israel.
A special thank you to Cantor
Zev Sonnenstein for spearhead-
ing this drive in years past and
for now encouraging the other
two Temples to join this special
food drive to benefit the Jerry
Doliner Food Bank. What is
especially neat is the kids sort
all the food before they bring it
to the Federation’s Office.
Todah Rabah to all who are
involved. Our food bank has
never been as busy and any
assistance we receive is really
appreciated. We have had many
calls from people requesting
Turkeys for Thanksgiving. Since
we are already spending close
to $10,000 a month on food,
we just can’t afford to purchase
turkeys.
We will accept gift cards for
turkeys or if you want to send
funds, just mark the check –the
memo section – turkeys. We
will supply all the extras. We
are trying to help 250 fami-
lies have a nice Thanksgiving
Holiday. We will be enclosing a
card, listing everyone who con-
tributed in all these baskets.
On Sunday, November 7th, at
7:00, a major dessert gift event
will be held at the home of Dr.
Aron and Norma Newfield. Our
guest speaker will be Gil Tam-
ary who is a TV icon in Israel.
For the last 8 years Gil has been
the Washington Reporter and
Washington Bureau Chief of the
Leading Israeli TV networks.
In his years in Washington,
Mr. Tamary has been covering
a wide range of Middle East
issues from a U.S. and Israeli
perspectives. He also conducted
exclusive interviews with many
dignitaries including Secretaries
of State, the head of the World
Bank and others. The event is
open to everyone who donates
$1,800 or over. If you are inter-
ested in attending, please call
the office @ 386-672-0294.
On Tuesday, November 9th,
at 7:30 pm, the Annual Kristall-
nact Observance will be held at
Temple Beth-El sponsored by
Temple Beth-El and the Federa-
tion. The historic documentary

FACEBOOK PAGE
We have started an effort to
unify and better utilize of our
Temple Beth-El social network-
ing. Beginning Nov. 1, TBE will
no longer just be a "group" but
will have its own Facebook page.
This will allow TBE and its various
committees and organizations
like WRJ, the Brotherhood, Dafty,
adult education etc. to better
communicate with members and
the community through event in-
vites, uploading pictures, posting
announcements and more.
I will be sending out an email
to committee chairpersons to
explain specifics. Please keep an
eye out for the new Temple Beth-
El page so you can "friend" us
and stay up-to-date on Temple
events.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving gives me time
to reflect on my life, my family

things I have done for others
since our last Turkey Day.
Whether my family is together

give thanks for them and the

support one another. That love

a lifetime!

MEMBER OF UNION FOR REFORM JUDAISMÊ
September 2010
Dear Friends and Members of Temple Beth-El,
Temple Beth-El will be 60 years old in 2011! We will be holding a celebration
of renewal on February 26th, 2011. We are inviting all our members and friends to
a wonderful celebration on that evening, with food and music and fellowship as we
reaffirm our vibrant place in the Jewish community and the community as a whole.
We are also inviting members and friends who wish to renew their wedding vows
with us on that evening.
We are preparing a tribute/memory book and we hope you will participate. The
reverse of this letter outlines the various ways you can participate.
The daily life of Temple Beth-El and its school are inextricably intertwined
with the fabric of the community. The Temple is a long-time member of the area’s
organizations of clergy and religious institutions. We hold a seat on the board of
Family Renew, we participate in feeding the homeless every month and we support
many inter-faith families. This is just a small sample of our involvement in the
community. We are involved in educating those of all ages, both at our Temple and
at institutions of higher learning. The Jewish Federation, which provides help in
times of need to members of the community, Jew and non-Jew alike, turns to Temple
Beth-El for fundraising, hosting events and assistance of many kinds.
While we recognize the downturn the economy has visited on many of you,
we hope that you will consider participating in the memory book in a significant
way. It is a rare opportunity to honor the enduring life of Temple Beth-El in this
community. The Temple is renewing itself, renewing its members and is committed
to continually renewing the community in which we live. We need your help to go
forward into the future.
We look forward receiving your ad, your generous support and to seeing you at
the celebration.
Very truly yours,
Barry Altman Malka Altman Jeff Bigman

UNDER THE CHUPPAH
Renewal of Wedding Vows
Here’s an opportunity to renew your wedding vows without incurring those
tremendous costs for renting a special space, sending invitations, providing a
caterer, paying for flowers and decorations, arranging for a photographer.
Prior to the 60th Anniversary Celebration in the Doris & Babe Katz Social Hall,
couples can renew their wedding vows in the Sanctuary under the chuppah with
Rabbi Altman officiating on the bimah.
For $180 per couple, you can participate in this opportunity. If we receive a
commitment to renew your vows, a $72 deposit, and a copy of your original
wedding picture by the December 1st deadline, your photo will be published in the
60th Anniversary Tribute Book.
In addition, you will be photographed as a couple and with the vow renewal group
under the chuppah. As part of this package, you will also receive a small bridal
bouquet, a boutonnière for the groom and a ketubah to commemorate this
momentous occasion.
The price of this package also includes your ticket to the anniversary celebration:
hors d’oeuvres reception with cash bar, a catered buffet with table wine,
and a dessert.

  • 3. Wit and Wisdom By Which to Live Life • Money kept in the banks may not be really yours. When it is time to spend, just spend. Treat yourself well as you’re getting old. • Treat sickness with optimism. Whether you are poor or rich, everyone has to go through birth, aging, sickness and death. There is no exception, that’s life! • Do not be afraid or worried when you are sick. Settle all the outstanding issues beforehand and you will be able to leave without regret! • Let the doctors handle your body, let GOD/NATURE handle your life, but be in charge of your own moods. • Our kids will make their own fortune. • Look after four old treasures: 1. Your old body: pay more attention to health, you can only rely on yourself in this. 2. Retirement funds: money that you have earned, it is best to keep them yourself. 3. Your old companion: treasure every moment with M ost of us are regular users of the Internet. We get bombarded with lots of communications that we neither wanted nor needed. A number of them might be categorized as “feel good” messages that are filled with beautiful pictures and well- intentioned thoughts; I tend to discard many of them without looking at them. But occasionally one attracts my attention and that is just what happened a couple of weeks ago as I was thinking about what I could say in this column to convince my congregation to truly live life! Someone sent me a power- point presentation entitled “The Secrets of Old Age” and it is addressed to “All Retired Friends.” Here are some of the words that accompanied some soothing music and some very lovely photos: “Secrets of life in 6 words:” Before Middle Age: Do not fear! After Middle Age: Do not regret! • Enjoy your life while you can. Do not wait until you cannot even work just to be sorry and to regret! • As long as it is physically possible, visit places you wish to visit. • When there is an opportunity, get together with old classmates, old colleagues and old friends. The gathering is not just about eating; it’s just that there isn’t much time left. your other half, one of you will leave first! 4. Your old friends: seize every opportunity to meet up with your old friends. Such opportunities will become rare as time goes by. • Things you must do every day: Smile and laugh. • Running water does not flow back. So is life, make it happy. RABBI BARRY ALTMAN Tuesday, November 9, 2010 Temple Beth-El 7:30pm Featuring Dr. Grady Ballenger Dean of Students at Stetson University who will introduce the historic documentary “NIGHT AND FOG” Program Sponsored by Grady Ballenger is Professor of English and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Stetson University. His graduate work in literature was completed at Columbia University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His teaching interests include documentary and narrative film and the ways that Hollywood films, in particular, recreate historical traumas like the Holocaust. Ten years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, filmmaker Alain Resnais documented the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz and Majdanek. One of the first cinematic reflections on the horrors of the Holocaust, NIGHT AND FOG contrasts the stillness of the abandoned camps’ quiet, empty buildings with haunting wartime footage. With NIGHT AND FOG, Resnais investigates the cyclical nature of man’s violence toward man and presents the unsettling suggestion that such horrors could come again. • 4. I t amazes me how quickly the year flies by. With the Thanksgiving and Chanukah season right around the corner, it reminds me how grateful I am for my family and friends, while at the same time keeping in mind those who are less fortunate. October ends each year with the youth groups’ Trick-or-Treat-for-Hunger program, collecting food for the Federation’s Jerry Doliner food pantry. This year was no exception; we had another successful food drive (thank you to all who helped!). However, I can’t help wonder if it was enough. This is the first year that I, personally, know people who were going hungry, who were going to food banks and soup kitchens and didn’t know where or if they would celebrate Thanksgiving this year. All this just brought to mind that as Jews we have the awesome opportunity and responsibility to watch out for each other. In Torah, we recently read about Cain and Abel and the famous question; “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The answer, plain and simple, is yes. Yes, we are. We have many choices to make each and every day ‒ some simple and others not ‒ but nonetheless, they are there to be made. The first Wednesday of each month we have a chance to make a difference in someone else’s life when we go and volunteer at the homeless coalition’s soup kitchen. The choice to help is there and many make that choice, but why make an effort only then? It seems as holidays approach ‒ no matter whether they are Jewish or secular ‒ we all seem to get this extra urge for giving. Not that this is a bad thing, but why does it take a holiday or holiday season to get us in the mood to give or help others? Throughout the year, we have many opportunities to answer the question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” and set an example for others to follow. It can involve participating in a social-action project or volunteering around the Temple in any capacity ‒ joining the choir, getting involved in an activity that is being run by Sisterhood or Brotherhood and supporting it, or getting involved with something such as the Jewish Heritage Festival planning. These are but a few ways we are our brother’s (and sister’s) keepers. What will you choose? B’Yididut ‒ In friendship. Cantor Zev H ello DAFTY followers, our last event at Ormond lanes was a blast! I would like to see more people attending DAFTY events. We started Trick-or- Treat for Hunger on October 17th by passing out flyers. We need lots of help to get this to run smoothly so I would like to see everyone there. Parents urge your kids to participate in this mitzvah. Make sure not to miss our very first “Over the Hump Night” of the season, Wednesday, November 10th. So mark your calendars and come for a few hours of fun to help get through the week. I hope to see more of you at our upcoming events. If you have any questions you can check out our DAFTY Facebook page. Sincerely, Cory Danow Youth Group president It’s Here! It’s Here! JR. & SR. YOUTH GROUP FUNDRAISER and we need your help! DAFTY and Jr. Dafty are now selling “Enjoy the City Coupon Books” for only $20.00! Great discounts focusing on Volusia and surrounding areas. • 5. A s Americans, when we think of November, our thoughts automatically turn to Thanksgiving. And, as American Jews, we have a lot to be thankful for. As Jews, except for the rare very early Chanukah, we are in between major holidays. There are some special days in history that deserve our praise including the day of the Balfour Declaration on November 2, 1917, when the British government formally declared in favor of a Jewish Homeland in Palestine (a much larger area than present day Israel) and November 29, 1947, the day of the UN vote in favor of the partition of Palestine leading the way to the establishment of today’s Israel. However, a review of history does not reveal November to generally be a kind month to Jews. Perhaps most notably, we recognize Kristallnacht during this month. This year, Dean Grady Ballenger of Stetson University will introduce and discuss the move “Night & Fog” at Temple Beth-El on November 9 at 7:30 p.m. The movie, a 1955 French short documentary on Auschwitz and Majdanek, reminds of the horrors of the not too distant past. Above, I have pointed out some of the other “lowlights” in Jewish history in November. These dates and occurrences remind us of the precious nature of the freedoms we enjoy as American Jews and of the importance of the state of Israel, especially at a time when our own government doesn’t seem to acknowledge and recognize that importance. So, in this American month of Thanksgiving, let us give thanks for our current circumstances but remember to “Never Forget.” Jeffrey Bigman JEWISH“LOWLIGHTS”IN NOVEMBER

Because our ritual has always been to select “our” cookie and read aloud “our” personal fortune, we enjoyed this task once more. This statement was my fortune: When weaving nets, all threads count. I immediately thought of my grandmother who at age 95 learned to weave. When she was proudly showing me the process on a small tabletop loom, I remembered her making a similar observation, especially the part about making sure you knew the count. It’s clear to me that this statement not only applies to weaving, but it is also relevant to people. With that relationship in mind, the fortune statement might say: When weaving networks, all people count. WRJ Sisterhood is a network of women, and for me, all members count. • 7. T here is so much YOU can do with your spare time to help Temple Beth- El. One hour a day or one hour a week – however much time you have would be so gratefully appreciated. You have so many choices, it’s hard to decided what to do: • Rabbi Altman needs help with his video library – re- catalogue videos, DVD’s, CD’s and films – there may be something hidden in there we could use for the Temple’s 60th anniversary. • Cantor Zev is always looking for helpers to Feed the Homeless – first Wednesday of every month. • Cantor Zev also needs help with the youth groups – mailings, chaperoning, phone calls, etc. • Do you like children? Would you be willing to spend some time in the classroom – maybe reading to the children, grading papers or just helping out? If so, please call Malka Altman at TBE School • Therese could also use some help with clerical duties – making copies, mailings, etc. • Temple kitchen – would you like to join a committee to take care of the Friday night Onegs – planning, preparation and cleanup? We definitely could use help in this department. Maybe you would like to sponsor an Oneg or just bring a dessert the next time you come to Friday night services. • I’m sure no one will volunteer for this , but it’s important – DUST. It’s always around and needs to be taken care of. We take care of our own homes, so why not your home away from home. • Outside landscaping – THANK YOU to Connor Brok and his group of volunteers for mulching the playground and surrounding areas in the back of the Temple. They did a great job! There are still other areas that could be done if someone would like to take the lead on mulching, planting, weeding. A good impression is always so important. Whatever you would like to do – just let us know. There are so many areas we could use your help that aren’t even listed. What would YOU like to do? Call Therese at the Temple office or myself and VOLUNTEER! It’s the right thing to do – and you’ll feel so good that you did! Rochelle Holtz Volunteer Coordinator rochelleholtz@gmail.com

His subject will be new this year and every bit as interesting. Thanks to Boy Scout Troop #468 our main entrance and our big playground got a new overhaul recently. Connor Brok, one of our Temple kids chose, for his Eagle Scout project, the renovation of our main en- trance and playground. They came with shovels, wheel bar- rows, and manpower and, in 5 hours, transformed our weed infested beds, and our play- ground into something to be proud of. We thank Connor and his troop for their hard work and dedication to beautifying our main entrance, I’m sure you will notice the difference as you drive by! CONNOR BROK EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT THANKS I would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help with my Eagle Scout Project at the Temple. Everyone worked hard to mulch the playground and the main en- trance. Monday Night School students planted flowers and the interior courtyard looks more inviting. Thank you to those who donat- ed funds to help defray some of the costs and the local businesses (Publix, Krispy Kreme, Dominos, and Jersey Mikes) that donated food and gift cards to feed the volunteers. Special thanks to the Waigand and Wagner families for donating the flowers from their recent temple events. They look great. I am grateful to the Temple and its mem- bers for helping me get one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. l had a great time plan- ning and carrying out my project. • 11. D ear Congregants: We are writing this in advance of the Trick-or-Treat-for- Hunger sponsored by Temple Beth-El, Congregation B’Nai Torah and Temple Israel. A special thank you to Cantor Zev Sonnenstein for spearhead- ing this drive in years past and for now encouraging the other two Temples to join this special food drive to benefit the Jerry Doliner Food Bank. What is especially neat is the kids sort all the food before they bring it to the Federation’s Office. Todah Rabah to all who are involved. Our food bank has never been as busy and any assistance we receive is really appreciated. We have had many calls from people requesting Turkeys for Thanksgiving. Since we are already spending close to $10,000 a month on food, we just can’t afford to purchase turkeys. We will accept gift cards for turkeys or if you want to send funds, just mark the check –the memo section – turkeys. We will supply all the extras. We are trying to help 250 fami- lies have a nice Thanksgiving Holiday. We will be enclosing a card, listing everyone who con- tributed in all these baskets. On Sunday, November 7th, at 7:00, a major dessert gift event will be held at the home of Dr. Aron and Norma Newfield. Our guest speaker will be Gil Tam- ary who is a TV icon in Israel. For the last 8 years Gil has been the Washington Reporter and Washington Bureau Chief of the Leading Israeli TV networks. In his years in Washington, Mr. Tamary has been covering a wide range of Middle East issues from a U.S. and Israeli perspectives. He also conducted exclusive interviews with many dignitaries including Secretaries of State, the head of the World Bank and others. The event is open to everyone who donates $1,800 or over. If you are inter- ested in attending, please call the office @ 386-672-0294. On Tuesday, November 9th, at 7:30 pm, the Annual Kristall- nact Observance will be held at Temple Beth-El sponsored by Temple Beth-El and the Federa- tion. The historic documentary “Night & Fog”, will be presented by Dr. Grady Ballenger, Dean of Students at Stetson Univer- sity. This event is open to the public and refreshments will be served. This will allow TBE and its various committees and organizations like WRJ, the Brotherhood, Dafty, adult education etc. to better communicate with members and the community through event in- vites, uploading pictures, posting announcements and more. I will be sending out an email to committee chairpersons to explain specifics. Please keep an eye out for the new Temple Beth- El page so you can "friend" us and stay up-to-date on Temple events. • 12. O ctober has been a month of “catching up” on projects that took a back seat during the High Holy Days preparations. I always feel better when I am in control of my desk instead of the other way around … and I feel I have reached that point again for a while. I thank everyone who has volunteered to help with temple office tasks … we couldn’t do what we do without you. November promises to offer a large variety of events for you to attend. Following the Thanksgiving holiday at the end of the month, Chanukah will be right around the corner. We encourage all of you to come out and enjoy the variety of events that the temple organizations are offering. We have never had a better selection of unique events and their success depends on you and your support. Fall has arrived in all of its glory and I am enjoying one of my favorite seasons of the year. Craft Shows abound at this time of year and I try to visit as many as I can. Thanksgiving gives me time to reflect on my life, my family & friends (including my Temple family) and I ponder what good things I have done for others since our last Turkey Day. Whether my family is together or apart on that day, I always give thanks for them and the positive reinforcement that they add to my life. Friends may come and go in our lives, but family will always be there to support one another. That love is truly a blessing to cherish for a lifetime! We will be holding a celebration of renewal on February 26th, 2011. We are inviting all our members and friends to a wonderful celebration on that evening, with food and music and fellowship as we reaffirm our vibrant place in the Jewish community and the community as a whole. We are also inviting members and friends who wish to renew their wedding vows with us on that evening. We are preparing a tribute/memory book and we hope you will participate. The reverse of this letter outlines the various ways you can participate. The daily life of Temple Beth-El and its school are inextricably intertwined with the fabric of the community. The Temple is a long-time member of the area’s organizations of clergy and religious institutions. We hold a seat on the board of Family Renew, we participate in feeding the homeless every month and we support many inter-faith families. This is just a small sample of our involvement in the community. We are involved in educating those of all ages, both at our Temple and at institutions of higher learning. The Jewish Federation, which provides help in times of need to members of the community, Jew and non-Jew alike, turns to Temple Beth-El for fundraising, hosting events and assistance of many kinds. While we recognize the downturn the economy has visited on many of you, we hope that you will consider participating in the memory book in a significant way. It is a rare opportunity to honor the enduring life of Temple Beth-El in this community.
