6. How do signs and symbols help?
• Signs and symbols give extra information
which can be seen.
• Signs and gestures are easier to learn than
spoken words
• Signs and symbols let others know what they
want, make choices, share information and
understand more. This helps build and
develop important communication and
language skills.

detail
• An illustration is simpler,
but still has detail.
• A symbol is a
representation of a single
idea.

We got to know our children and young people really well. We know what people want without them saying a word. We
provide specialist services, supervise, develop targets, assess risks..
So that our children and young people can move ahead into their own lives, away from us
We aspire for our children and young people to live independently or with others in the community; we wish them to work, have fun in their leisure time, develop a range of relationships, be active in their lives without us
Our children and young people have never been more involved in planning for their own support. They are included and their opinions sought at every stage, including during the transition from school into the next stage of their lives.
But many of our CYP lack a strong voice. It is up to us to make sure that we provide them with the experience and equip them with the tools to know and describe their choices. This process starts early, when they are at school and at home and we need to think about how we are teaching them to be ready to communicate as independently as possible.
We don’t assume that we simply need to teach people the name for concepts they already understand. We use signs and synbols to help people to develop understanding as well as to express themselves. We are going to romp through some examples of ways in which we can use signs and symbols now, to help prepare our children and young people for the future.
We all use symbols in life. They can be illustrations, glimpses of an idea.
Particularly for people with ASD, a picture can be too specific – what
So that people can choose who to be with, know the roles of those involved, ask for services, say if something bad has happened.
To make choices you need to be able to know and express differences between people, things, activities. This is important not just for choice making but for safeguarding
Be clear and rules, roles and responsibilities, and ways to get help. Be explicit.
We don’t assume that people can identify what they are feeling, never mind express it
