BEHAVIOUR THERAPY:-
INTRODUCTION:-
 It is based on learning theory (classical and
operant theory).
 CLASSICAL CONDITIONING THEORY:-
In this automatic response is transfer through
one stimulus to other stimulus
 OPERANT CONDITIONING THEORY:- it
is a type of learning theory through which
the strength of a behaviour is modified by its
consequences
 It is to change the behaviour of individual to
reduce dysfunction and improve quality of
life.

 Behavior therapy is a type of psychotherapy
which focuses on modifying faulty behavior
rather than basic changes in the personality.
 Behavior therapist tries to eliminate the
symptoms and modify in effective or
maladaptive patterns applying basic learning
techniques.
DEFINITION:-
 It is a form of psychotherapy, the goal of
which is to modify maladaptive behavior
patterns by reinforcing more adaptive
behavior.
 It is a systemic application of scientific
principle of learning and a firm of
psychotherapy aim at changing maladaptive
behviour.
PURPOSE:-
 Permanent change in behavior occurs as a
result of practice or experience
 Helps the client to acquire new coping skills
 It will help the individual to communicate or
learn to break maladaptive habits
 Help the individual to overcome self
defeating emotional conflicts
PRINCIPLES:-
 Closed observation of behavior is essential

1. Systematic desensitization:-
It was developed by Joseph Wolpe. In this
patients attain a complete relaxation and are
then exposed to the stimulus that elicits the
anxiety response.it has three types:-
 Relaxation technique
 Hierarchy construction
 Desensitization of the stimulus

the phobic stimulus
3. Aversion therapy:- an individual gives up
undesirable habits with an unpleasant effect.
4. Operant conditioning for increasing adaptive
behavior:-
 Positive reinforcement

behviour:-

6. Operant conditioning for decreasing
maladaptive behviour:-
 Extinction/ignoring

CONCLUSION:-
 Behavioral therapy is not a cure for any
condition. It is a teaching method to help
cope with everyday life. Depending on
individual needs, a person may only need it
on a short-term basis. The exact length of a
treatment plan depends on individual goals
and progress made.

 During treatment it is important to continue
taking any medications as prescribed by a
doctor. Some research shows that learned
techniques in therapy may gradually reduce
the need for medicine. However, each case is
different. Speak with a doctor if treatment
doesn’t seem to be working.
