Material handling equipment expected to benefit from continued
growth of above 5% p.a. until 2025 – Digitization to drive Automation
Management summary
1 Management summary
Overall industry expected to grow on an above 5% level p.a. until 2025. Strong interest into automated storage and retrieval
systems and automated guided vehicles drives the market evolution significantly
Recently, leading enterprises have been particularly strengthening software and robotics capabilities through acquisitions of
small, specialized players (e.g. ISI Automation acquisition by Jungheinrich, DS Automation collaboration with SSI Schäfer)
Average industry EBIT-margin is around 7% and the average annual growth in the last three years is approx. 10%. However,
neither company size (in terms of revenue) nor technology focus seems to be a clear indicator on profitability
Exhibitors at LogiMat1) have demonstrated the increasing importance of autostorage systems, item-picking solutions to further
automate order processing, flexible software solutions as key differentiator and strong move towards Li-Ion battery technology
Automated storage and retrieval systems identified as technology with highest growth (c.6% p.a.), mainly driven by e-commerce
and next generation warehouses and distribution centers increasingly adopting a "goods-to-person" concept
Innovation activities largely address three trends: automation, digitalization and electrification (e.g. fully automated material flow
using Still tugger trains or big data analysis for preventive maintenance with CMMS from SSI Schäfer)
Clear actions required to overcome expected challenges (e.g. supporting growth, strengthening service to benefit from
modernization wave in EU/US) and develop new software/analytics (e.g. big data) and project management capabilities
Asia/Pacific region showing highest regional growth rate of c.6% p.a. until 2025 mainly due to Asian factories now catching up
in terms of automation. US and Europe still growing but with below average growth rate (c.4% p.a.)

Great potential for automation, digitalization and new technologies –
Successful integration of systems, software and robotics is key
Selected expert opinions
Mid-sized companies remain conservative with regard to
digitalization. This is a poor strategy, even smaller
companies can already implement aspects such
as predictive maintenance. Market participant
Enhanced usage of collaborative
robots will drive warehouse logistics. In
the future robots will identify where they

The logistics interface software (as link between
software and hardware) is of great importance.
It proves to be a clear advantage in this
respect, to provide both hardware and

  • 3. 3RB Material handling equipment study_2019_vf_Sent externally (002).pptx Material handling equipment expected to benefit from continued growth of above 5% p.a. until 2025 – Digitization to drive Automation Management summary 1 Management summary Overall industry expected to grow on an above 5% level p.a. until 2025. Strong interest into automated storage and retrieval systems and automated guided vehicles drives the market evolution significantly Recently, leading enterprises have been particularly strengthening software and robotics capabilities through acquisitions of small, specialized players (e.g. ISI Automation acquisition by Jungheinrich, DS Automation collaboration with SSI Schäfer) Average industry EBIT-margin is around 7% and the average annual growth in the last three years is approx. 10%. However, neither company size (in terms of revenue) nor technology focus seems to be a clear indicator on profitability Exhibitors at LogiMat1) have demonstrated the increasing importance of autostorage systems, item-picking solutions to further automate order processing, flexible software solutions as key differentiator and strong move towards Li-Ion battery technology Automated storage and retrieval systems identified as technology with highest growth (c.6% p.a.), mainly driven by e-commerce and next generation warehouses and distribution centers increasingly adopting a "goods-to-person" concept Innovation activities largely address three trends: automation, digitalization and electrification (e.g. fully automated material flow using Still tugger trains or big data analysis for preventive maintenance with CMMS from SSI Schäfer) Clear actions required to overcome expected challenges (e.g. supporting growth, strengthening service to benefit from modernization wave in EU/US) and develop new software/analytics (e.g. big data) and project management capabilities Asia/Pacific region showing highest regional growth rate of c.6% p.a. until 2025 mainly due to Asian factories now catching up in terms of automation. US and Europe still growing but with below average growth rate (c.4% p.a.) Source: Roland Berger 1) LogiMat trade fair, Stuttgart February 2019
