We know that, as leaders of change within your organisation,
your time is valuable. The CFO of the Future Intensive Workshop

Future series, held over six months, into a valuable two day snapshot.
A dynamic new business world
is evolving and as a current or

upstream and downstream
ŸŸ Redefine and challenge your
existing budgeting systems and
learn how to develop best-of-breed
forecasting models
ŸŸ Explore contemporary approaches
to risk management, sustainability
and integrated reporting.
4
Creating a winning finance team
Prolonged uncertainty and risky times have
created new and exciting opportunities
for transformation in the finance team,
requiring a CFO that asserts strong
leadership in strategic planning, risk
management and forecasting.
This session reviews the DNA of a winning
finance team and takes an in-depth look
at the role and skill set required of a 21st
Century CFO. Explore the 23 strategic
business management tools that can
be used to make the finance team more
inspired, dynamic and focused, including:
ŸŸ Strategic budgeting and forecasting
ŸŸ Best practice business performance
reporting
ŸŸ Sustainability reporting
ŸŸ Improved revenue and cost management
approaches
ŸŸ Real Options Analysis and strategic
predictive techniques
ŸŸ Customer Profitability Analysis.
The CFO as corporate strategist
This session focuses on the tools and
techniques needed by the CFO to visibly
contribute to strategic thinking and planning
within the organisation. You will explore:
ŸŸ The Blue/Red Ocean Strategy
approach and how to adapt this to your
organisation’s strategic position and
business plan
ŸŸ The ‘Visioning Tomorrow Today’ strategic
planning techniques and its application to
your organisation
ŸŸ A 2 X 2 SWOT Analysis and 3 X 3 SWOT
Action Plan to develop 10 strategic
programs for your organisation
ŸŸ How to prepare a strategic scorecard
and an operational scorecard
ŸŸ Applying the strategic scorecard and
its importance in linking planning and
management reporting
ŸŸ How to develop your organisation’s ‘plan-
on-a-page’
ŸŸ How to develop a Business Continuity
Plan (BCP) and drive its implementation.
Budgeting, forecasting and
management reporting practices
Line-by-line budgeting is dead and
forecasting beyond the current period is
now commonplace, as is the technology to
facilitate it. Gain an understanding of future-
focused tools and techniques, such as:
ŸŸ How to revisit, revise or abandon your
current budget model to break free from
the ‘death by budgets’ regime
ŸŸ How to proactively integrate and
communicate a rolling forecast model
for upstream board and downstream
management reporting
ŸŸ The techniques to regularly report at Day
One end of month, every month.
Day one
“John Petty has a balanced approach
to the theory and practical application
of themes –with many real life examples
of the content”. “I would recommend this
course to professionals who are subject
matter experts and need a new set
of skills to take the next stop to CFO”-
Nicole Van Niekerk
5
Managing through the ‘Measures
That Matter’
Be introduced to the ‘Measures That Matter’
research findings and learn to apply it to an
organisation’s external and internal reporting
frameworks.
This session uses 30 scorecards, dashboards
and flash reports to demonstrate:
ŸŸ The application of the balanced
scorecard and other non-financial
indicator models in an organisation
ŸŸ How to ‘report on a page’
ŸŸ How to develop your ‘corporate radar’
or GPS model for effective reporting
progress
ŸŸ How to spend less time looking out the
rear view mirror and develop proactive
lead indicators of performance.
Strategic revenue supporter and
strategic cost manager
The CFO needs to be both revenue supporter
and cost monitor, and effectively employ
various tools to achieve this balance. Here
you will consider the practical application
of strategic revenue techniques and the
latest cost and discretionary expense control
and management tools, including; expense
reduction analysis, overhead valuation
analysis and service level agreements.
Sustainability and risk
management reporting
Sustainability is no longer a feel-good
marketing exercise, it is rapidly becoming
a compelling corporate issue or ‘license to
operate’. New sustainability and integrated
reporting frameworks are emerging which
require a holistic approach to measuring,
managing and reporting your organisation’s
financial and strategic positions. Dynamic
finance teams are becoming adept at
reconciling and managing the differences
presented between these performance
reports and traditional conformance reports
based on statutory reporting standards.
We explore the sustainability journey so far
and discuss the latest sustainability and
integrated reporting models.
The CFO increasingly complements other
positions in the organisation, such as that of
the Chief Risk Officer .
In this session we will:
ŸŸ Explore the latest management
approaches to risk management and
risk mitigation
ŸŸ Explain Real Option Theory and the use
of strategic predictive analysis
ŸŸ Review the use of scenario planning
and sensitivity analysis as a risk
management tool.

The CFO of the Future Intensive Workshop condenses the key learnings and topics from the six day CFO of the Future series, held over six months, into a valuable two day snapshot. A dynamic new business world is evolving and as a current or aspiring CFO you are at the centre of this change.
