Short term solar lighting market
•The market for solar lanterns (SPL) is increasingly crowded with
competitors – but still sees low market penetration
•End users are becoming more sophisticated and, with increasing product
choice decisions, consider features and aspirations rather than only cost
•SPLs are considered an important step for brand building and increasing
demand for more renewable energy products and services
•Barefoot, therefore, focuses on the premium end of the SPL market (USD
30+ retail) and small solar home systems (SHS) (USD 40-USD 200 retail)

Mid-to-long term solar power market
•Few companies are positioned to participate in the USD 50 billion market for
larger SHS and accessories such as TVs, fans, radios, refrigerators, laptop
chargers & lithium Ion based street lights
•Higher capital costs, however, limit purchases with cash; in-roads to this
market are via financed products until disposable income increases
•Finance can either be via Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) technology, microfinance or via
large enterprises that are willing to support employees or distribution partners
•The PAYG model has high capital requirements – so currently Barefoot Power
focuses on microfinance and large enterprises. The advantages being this shifts
risk of the end-user financing away from Barefoot Power and reduces customer
acquisition costs by leveraging existing networks of potential end users.

5. The Energy Crisis
• According to World Bank’s Off-Grid Lighting Consumer Perceptions Study 2015, around 800 million people in
Asia are without adequate provision of electricity. They can be grouped into Off-grid, un-served: who are not
connected to the national grid, and (b) On-grid, underserved: who are connected to the national grid, but
experience daily load-shedding in excess of 10 hours on average.
• Most of the off-grid, un-served households rely on kerosene lanterns and candles. Though widely perceived to
be inexpensive, fuel-based lighting devices in reality are costly in the long run, inferior in terms of the quality of
light they provide, dangerous both for general safety and health, and harsh on the environment polluting by
emission of Nitrous Oxide.
• Most of the on-grid, underserved households use battery powered torches or rechargeable lights and candles
for their lighting needs. Many of the devices in their use, though more diverse and expensive, offer no
assurance of quality and fail miserably on the promises of durability and effectiveness.
