2. What is a review article?
• A critical, constructive analysis of the literature in a
specific field through summary, classification, analysis,
comparison.
• A scientific text relying on previously published literature
or data.
• New data from the author’s experiments are not presented
(with exceptions: some reviews contain new data).
• It provides a new approach/perspective that would
stimulate further research.
3. What is the function of a review
article?
• To organize literature
• To evaluate literature
• To identify patterns and trends in the literature
• To synthesize literature
• To identify research gaps and recommend new
research areas
4. Writing and Publishing an Unsolicited Review
Solicited vs. Unsolicited Review
• Solicited reviews, of course, are relatively valuable things and the
authors creating them have been asked by academic journals to
create said reviews.
• Unsolicited reviews, by contrast, are created by authors based on
their own research.
• However, many authors also seek to write reviews for various other
reasons, such as building a publication record in respected journals,
establishing themselves as experts in the field and highlighting their
work, or conveying a novel opinion regarding a current research
direction. These types of reviews are not invited, and are known
as unsolicited reviews.
• It was not asked for and possibly not wanted.
5. Tips and Tricks for Writing and Publishing an
Unsolicited Review
1. Simplify The Research
2. Importance of Writing Flow For Publishing Review Paper
3. The Authors’ Contribution For Publishing Review Paper
4. Avoid Obscurity
5. Stay on Track and Maintain Flow throughout the
Document
6. Present an Effective Conclusion
6. 1. Simplify The Research
• Research is all about simplifying the things. It will be very easy if
you can simplify the big goal into small specific objectives.
• How to find the novel topic for the review paper?
7. 1. Simplify The Research
The research simplification
As shown in Figure, your research area is Energy.
• You choose the DEVICE as an Energy Application
• Then, you opt the LITHIUM ION BATTERY as a Device
• After that, you select the SEPARATOR in Lithium Ion Battery for your
research
• Then, you choose SEPARATOR PREPARATION METHODS to go deep
under Separator
• Afterward, you choose the SOLUTION CASTING METHOD among other
Preparation methods
• Next, you might be interested in FILLERS used in Solution Casting Method
• Then, you might specify GRAPHENE as your chosen Filler for further
research
• And so on……!!!!
8. 1. Simplify The Research
• Find A Novel Topic
You must be clear about the research direction at least till step (3)
when intend to write a review paper. Then, just try to find out any
unpublished step(s) (3-10). It will be your specific topic for the
review paper.
• Choose A Suitable Title
A title for step 3-5 must have every component involved. The title can
be like “Effectiveness of separator (step 5) in lithium ion battery (step
3 & 4)”. You can notice that the title has covered all the components
from step 3-5. Similarly, the title for step 3-8 must be like
“Effectiveness of fillers (8) in solution casting method (6, 7) used for
lithium ion battery (3, 4) separators (5)”. Whereas, the title for (step
3-9) must be like “Graphene (9): an emerging filler (8) in the
separators (5) for lithium ion battery (3, 4)”. The title must provide
a clear message about what can be expected in the paper.
9. 1. Simplify The Research
• Title: between 8 to 12 words
Helping readers to decide whether they should read the text or not
• List of authors: Declare intellectual ownership of the work, provide
contact information.
• Abstract: Informs about the main objectives and result of the review
article.
• usually 200 to 250 words
• Introduction: Provides information about the context, indicates the
motivation for the review, defines the focus, the research question and
explains the text structure.
10. 2. Importance of Writing Flow For Publishing Review
Paper
• The review paper includes the abstract, introduction and conclusion.
However, it doesn’t include the methodology and results and discussion
sections. Normally, the manuscript of the technical paper must have 3000 –
5000 words.
• Whereas, there must be at least 12000 – 15000 words in a typical review
paper. There must be a systematic arranged discussion about the chosen
novel area in detail.
• At first, you must prepare the review outline with proper headings and sub-
headings. Then, you can put the appropriate content under particular
sections. There must be a good linkage between each paragraph, as
discussed in the previous paper.
• Flow of one paragraph to the beginning of another paragraph. The main
headings must be well connected. Also, the sub-headings must be placed
appropriately to maintain the rhythm and flow of writing. Further, the last
paragraph of the introduction must show the novelty of your review paper.
11. 3. The Authors’ Contribution For Publishing Review Paper
• By Using Tables
The use of tables is the most effective way to show the authors`
contribution. The tables you prepare have never published before.
Hence, it will be considered as an authors contribution.
• By Using Mind Maps And Self-Made Figures- The mind mapping
and some excellent descriptive figures can also be considered as
authors contribution. You can even re-use the published graphical
abstract to attract the reviewers if it suits the content. Also, you can
use draw some descriptive figures about to highlight your creativity.

12. 3. The Authors’ Contribution For Publishing Review Paper
One can just re-draw and modify the figure from the published
article. However, one has to modify and draw it by him/herself to
claim the ownership. Similarly, the mind maps or other creative ways
can also be an effective tool to show your potential and contribution
to the reviewers.
You can easily summarize the 15000 words article with the help of
one mind map only. Hence, one can imagine the power of these
creative techniques.
• Authors Discussion-
First, you can update the references to extend the discussion in the
same flow. In this way, you do not only contribute in the discussion
but also update the references.
Second, always add up few discussion lines in the concluding
paragraph of each section. The lines might be about the importance,
advantageous, and disadvantageous of the particular section.
13. 4. Avoid Obscurity
• One of the most common issues that is encountered with reviews is
the use of vague statements that are not substantiated with evidence
from the literature. As a rule of thumb it is recommended that each
section of the review begin with a broad statement that is the
supported by evidence from the literature. Any evidence contrary to
such statements can also be presented; however, specific details
should always be provided.
• Instead of
This
• Do This
14. 5. Stay on Track and Maintain Flow throughout the
Document
• Another common mistake many authors make when composing a
review is deviation from the central theme of the paper. Typically, the
theme of the review will become derailed by describing non-relevant
literature or introducing a topic that does not fit with the overarching
message of the article. To ensure that the document maintains
adequate flow and cohesion, for each statement that is written, ask:
15. 6. Present an Effective Conclusion
• Surprisingly, the conclusions of a review are often overlooked or not
mentioned at all. The conclusions are one of the most crucial sections
of the review as it is the message that the reader will walk away with.
Therefore, it is extremely important that the following are mentioned
in the conclusions of the review:
1. A summary (1 to 2 statements) of the current literature.
2. The significance of the main findings.
3. The implications of these findings.
4. The limitations and areas of future research
While these are just some of the areas to consider when
considering the submission of an unsolicited review, they are
extremely important for maximizing the possibility that the
manuscript will advance to the peer review stage.
