WORKBENCH

 Gears are the most important member of mechanical power
transmission system.
 Geared devices can change the speed, magnitude, and
direction of a power source.
 Toothed gears are used to change the speed, power, and
direction between an input and output shaft.
 Friction Drives- Friction drives are made up of two or
more wheel that are in contact the first wheel is the primary
drive wheel and the second is the output wheel.
 Pulleys With Belt- It consist of two pulleys or wheel that
are a certain distance apart.
 Gear Mechanism And Cogwheels- It is the set of wheels
that have teeth called cogs.
1. According to the position of axes of the shafts
 Parallel
 Intersecting
 Non-intersecting and Non-Parallel
2. According to the peripheral velocity of the gears
 Low Velocity Gear
 Medium Velocity Gear
 High Velocity Gear
3. According to the type of gearing
 External Gearing
 Internal Gearing
4. According to position of teeth on the gear surface
 Straight
 Inclined
 Curved
There are four types of Gear
 Spur Gear
 Helical Gear
 Bevel Gear
 Worm Gear
Spur Gear-Spur gears are the most commonly used gear
type. Parallel and co planer shafts connected by gears are
called spur gears. Spur gears are by far the most
commonly available, and are generally the least
expensive.
 Teeth is parallel to axis of rotation,
 Transmit power from one shaft to another parallel shaft,
 Least expensive.
FUNCTION OF GEAR
 A toothed machine part, such as a wheel or cylinder,
that meshes with another toothed part to transmit
motion or to change speed or direction and complete
assembly that performs a specific function.
 Gears can increase speed, increase force or change
direction.
 A gear is a simple, rotating machine which usually has
teeth.
 When they connect to another gear, they
transmit torque.
 When two gears work together, it is called a
transmission.
 Bending Failure
 Pitting
 Abrasive Wear
 Corrosive Wear
 They offer constant velocity ratio.
 Spur gears are highly reliable.
 Spur gears are simplest, hence easiest to design and
manufacture.
 A spur gear is more efficient if you compare it with helical
gear of same size.
 Spur gear teeth are parallel to its axis. Hence, spur gear
train does not produce axial thrust. So the gear shafts can be
mounted easily using ball bearings.
 They can be used to transmit large amount of power (of the
order of 50,000 kW).
 Spur gear are slow-speed gears.
 Gear teeth experience a large amount of stress.
 They cannot transfer power between non-parallel shafts.
 They cannot be used for long distance power transmission.
 Spur gears produce a lot of noise when operating at high
speeds.
 When compared with other types of gears, they are not as
strong as them.

 REVIEW OF RESEARCH PAPER
• From the rearch paper of Putti Srinivasa Rao & Ch.Vamsi
et al. (2016) we observe that the gears with diameter
127mm & width 101mm mostly failed due to deformation
shear stresses excessive load and at the tip of tooth, also
interference occers.
 The 2D design of spur gear is prepared on the
PTC CREO 3.0 software in which the design and
the dimensions of the gear are taken from the
research paper of“Putti Srinivasa Rao, Nadipalli
Sriraj, Mohammad Farookh.
 The 3D model of spur gear is an enhanced view
of the previously 2D designed figure of gear. It is
the extruded view profile of the 2D design.
 It is also done on the PTC CREO 3.0 software.

 Analysis of spur gear using FEM.
 Minimize the stresses at critical locations.
 Checking the validation of spur gear with experimental
data.
 Comparison of our result through FEM and ANSYS with
the theoretical results.
 Shape optimization of spur gear on the basis of stress
analysis.

Parallel and co planer shafts connected by gears are called spur gears. FUNCTION OF GEAR  A toothed machine part, such as a wheel or cylinder, that meshes with another toothed part to transmit motion or to change speed or direction and complete assembly that performs a specific function.  Gears can increase speed, increase force or change direction.  A gear is a simple, rotating machine which usually has teeth.  When they connect to another gear, they transmit torque.  When two gears work together, it is called a transmission.

  • 8.  They offer constant velocity ratio.  Spur gears are highly reliable.  Spur gears are simplest, hence easiest to design and manufacture.  A spur gear is more efficient if you compare it with helical gear of same size.  Spur gear teeth are parallel to its axis. Hence, spur gear train does not produce axial thrust. So the gear shafts can be mounted easily using ball bearings.  They can be used to transmit large amount of power (of the order of 50,000 kW).
  • 9.  Spur gear are slow-speed gears.  Gear teeth experience a large amount of stress.  They cannot transfer power between non-parallel shafts.  They cannot be used for long distance power transmission.  Spur gears produce a lot of noise when operating at high speeds.  When compared with other types of gears, they are not as strong as them.
