of Literature.
‘Pieces of writing that are valued as works of
art, especially novels, plays and poems’.
(Oxford Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary).
Narrow definition because non-fiction
literature is not included in this definition

Broadly speaking, "literature" is used to describe anything
from creative writing to more technical or scientific
works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to
works of the creative imagination, including works
of poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction.
Literature is an art that aims at producing beauty in writing

Literature represents a language or a people:
culture and tradition.
Literature introduces us to new worlds of

Literature is an interpretation of life.

Basic Elements of Literature
Literature is built around several key elements. It is
important to understand these elements, if you are
going to appreciate the texts you’re reading.
Point of View: the perspective from which a story is observed
and told
Symbol: an object that represents an abstraction (Doves
symbolize peace.)
Theme: the main idea
Tone: the overall mood
Setting: the geographical, historical, and social location
Plot: the sequence of events and action
