The document discusses an income protection claim by Colin with The Exeter. It summarizes Colin's experience having a stroke at age 37, which initially paralyzed his left side. Though he regained mobility, 18 months later he still struggles with some tasks requiring fine motor skills or concentration. During his claim, The Exeter connected him with an occupational therapist who helped him gain confidence to return to work in a way that supported his recovery. Without income protection, Colin would have been forced to return to work too soon, putting himself at risk and straining his finances. His experience demonstrated how income protection can be a lifesaver during unexpected life events.

Colin’s story
An income protection claim with The Exeter
“You can’t predict what will happen next in
life. Income protection has been a life-saver”
Behind every claim is a person. Here’s Colin’s story.
“I’ve been working as a rigger for the past 13 years, a physical job
requiring rope access skills. In August 2014, I suffered a stroke at the
age of 37.
This initially left me paralysed on my left side, thankfully I regained
almost all mobility over the following few months. The stroke left
me feeling exhausted and unable to perform some everyday tasks
as well as I once could. 18 months on, there are still tasks that I
struggle with; particularly those requiring fine motor skills or long
periods of concentration.
During my claim, as well as receiving regular benefit payments,
The Exeter put me in touch with Julie from Rehab Options, an
occupational therapist. She visited me at home and spent a long
time getting to know how the stroke had affected me and my ability
to return to work.
Julie gave me the confidence that my return to work would continue
to aid my recovery, it felt like I had someone fighting my corner that
had the knowledge behind them.
Without income protection, I would have been forced to return to
work too soon, putting myself and others at risk. There would also
have been a real strain put on my finances, making it very difficult to
meet mortgage repayments and monthly outgoings.
My personal claims assessor Lee has been very helpful throughout
the whole process, and I have since happily recommended The
Exeter to others.
This experience has taught me that you can’t predict what will
happen next in life. Income protection has been a life-saver.”
