Tambrite is the best-known carton board brand among European
converters, and it is widely used in pharmaceutical, food, chocolate
and confectionery packaging. The renowned, fully coated folding
boxboard will now be available lighter than ever with a reduced
basis weight.
The reduction in basis weight provides benefits throughout the
supply chain by generating savings in raw materials, less weight in
storage and transportation, less packaging waste and fees, and a
lower carbon footprint. Thanks to recent product development, the
runnability, stiffness, print results and packaging performance of the
board are guaranteed to remain as good as ever.
Suitable for the most demanding applications
“Tambrite will be an even more efficient and environmentally friendly
choice, yet it will offer the same outstanding performance in the
most demanding applications, such as pharmaceutical packaging
with laser or inkjet coding or Braille embossing,” explains Öystein
Aksnes, General Packaging Segment Director at Stora Enso.
“We are pleased to present Tambrite as the number one choice
for brand owners seeking excellent packaging performance and
value for money,” says Mr Aksnes.
Tambrite is produced at Stora Enso’s Ingerois Mill in Finland.
The mill will gradually introduce the new, lower grammage range in
production to enable a smooth switch and flexible board deliveries
to all customers who use Tambrite in their packages.
Stora Enso’s new supply chain management process and effec-
tive sheeting services help ensure quick board deliveries according
to customers’ individual demands.

Replacing plastic in child-proof
packaging
The new Pandora Box enables the use of
cartonboard in a child-proof packaging
application. The solution, by A&R Carton,
meets the requirements of the pharmaceu-
tical industry and responds to the request
of the brand owner and consumers for a
high-quality appearance and sustainability.
The customer wanted A&R Carton to
provide the ideal single-piece carton solu-
tion for its nicotine gum. The objective was
a child-proof solution with barrier function
suitable for fully automatic processing. The
consumer was to be able to use the carton
intuitively and remove the product easily. To
ensure a favourable price and flexible deliv-
ery, conventional materials were to be used.
The solution was created in co-opera-
tion between A&R Carton, Stora Enso and
other specialized suppliers.
“We looked into many different con-
structions and solutions during the project
until we got everything right. Making a so-
lution like this work takes a combination of
construction, board, glue and machinery,”
says Peter Andersson, the construction
designer of the package from A&R Carton.
Child-proof solutions made of carton-
board are still rare; most are still made of
plastic. Cartonboard was, however, the pre-
ferred material for this product, and Stora
Enso’s special, tear-resistant grade of Enso-
card met the strict requirements. All objec-
tives were met: security features, improved
access to the product, and intuitive use.
“We tested many materials and found
that this material had both the strength and
the flexibility to handle this box,” says Mr
Andersson.
The Pandora Box won in the Pharma-
ceutical category of the 2013 Pro Carton/
ECMA Awards.
From the editor
In recent months I have had the pleas-
ure of celebrating Christmas, New Year
and my family members’ birthdays. Dur-
ing all these festivities, I noticed the major
role that paper and carton play: Beautiful
greeting cards, presents in decorative gift
wrappings, gift boxes of wine and fancy
chocolate boxes all contribute to the fes-
tive atmosphere.
At the same time, while strolling
through the aisles of toy stores and de-
partment stores, it was appalling to see all
the junk and plastic stuff there. Sorry kids,
you won’t get your pet toy from auntie if
it is packed in rigid plastic. I also try to
avoid greeting cards with unnecessary
wrappings. Too often they just hide the
poor quality of the paper used!
Once the party is over, it is time to
clean up and get rid of all the boxes and
wrappings. I’m not so bothered by that.
Carton burns well, a valuable characteris-
tic in Finland’s dark winters, where lighting
up a fireplace is one of my regular activi-
ties. Of course, most of the cartons go to
paperboard recovery after being dropped
off at a collection point, for example, on
the way to the local supermarket.
In Finland, paperboard recovery is
arranged in a nationwide network in co-
operation with producer organisations in
the packaging sector, in which also Stora
Enso is a shareholder. This network of re-
covery points is currently being reformed,
hopefully for the better. Easy recycling is
important for all parties involved – con-
sumers, producers and brand owners
alike. It is also important to get the re-
covered materials back into the indus-
trial cycle.
Renewable packaging is thus a good
choice, but there is room for improve-
ment. Why are non-renewable inserts and
wrappings still being used so much also
in cartons? Why does over-packaging
and inferior packaging exist? The main
reason is the lack of investment in new
packaging solutions and packaging lines.
Better solutions are available for responsi-
ble packaging companies and consumer
brand owners. Even a small increase in
the share of renewable raw materials in
packaging could reduce environmental
impact.
Why does inferior
packaging exist?
Sometimes an idea becomes bigger than the
sum of its parts. Such is the case with the
corrugated logistics drawer used at Volvo’s
spare parts warehouse.
From this warehouse, thousands upon
thousands of spare parts are sent out each
day to Volvo owners all over the world.
Among the 80,000 article numbers are tubes,
air filters, upholstery and many other items.
Every part is selected by hand by the ware-
house personnel, who naturally have many
details to keep track of.
Until recently, all parts were stored in
open wooden pallets equipped with the de-
sired number of pallet collars. Some time
ago, however, Volvo started looking for an
alternative solution that would enable more
efficient use of the storage space.
New drawer increases
Volvo’s storage capacity
by 300%
Papyrus Supplies became involved
and, in collaboration with Stora Enso
Packaging, began developing ideas
and prototypes. A large drawer made of
heavy-duty corrugated board was chosen
as the final solution. This drawer works
exactly like a regular drawer, but is deliv-
ered folded and stacked for convenient
handling.
Using this new logistics drawer, Volvo
can now fit more article numbers in the
same space. In the more high-frequen-
cy areas of the warehouse, the company
has managed to increase its storage ca-
pacity by 300%, thereby enabling Volvo
to save space and time – and increase
production.

The jury of the Recreate Packaging 2014
design challenge was impressed by the high
quality of the contest entries received from
all over the world. The task was to create
new packaging solutions for healthcare and
beauty care products, serving the needs of
consumers who travel a lot. The winners of
the contest will be revealed in April.
Recreate Packaging is a contest that
invites the worldwide design community
to rethink current packaging solutions. Its
purpose is to push the boundaries of tra-
ditional packaging and find new, innovative
approaches. Recreate Packaging 2014 is
being organised by Stora Enso in co-op-
eration with Aalto University’s International
Design Business Management program in
Finland.
The design challenge of Recreate Pack-
aging 2014 was to rethink travel packaging.
The designers were asked to select three
personal and/or health care items and come
up with a new packaging solution that deliv-
ers the functions of primary and secondary
packages – a solution that surpasses the
functionality of the conventional packaging
and makes travelling more convenient and
responsible.
The challenge was well received among
the global design community, and designers
from 32 countries around the world signed
up for the contest. This group included both
professional packaging designers and de-
sign students from various universities. To
support the designers in their task, Stora
Enso provided them a selection of fibre-
based board materials including Ensocoat,
microflute and corrugated board. The versa-
tility of the materials allowed the designers
to use their creativity and come up with new
and interesting concepts.
The Recreate Packaging jury, consist-
ing of professionals with expertise in various
fields, such as packaging design and pro-
duction as well as logistics and travelling,
was impressed by the high quality of the
designs. In judging the designs, they paid at-
tention to the functionality of the design, how
pleasant and easy it was to use, while being
aesthetically appealing too. Other judging
criteria were the innovative use of the ma-
terials and the production potential of the
design. The designs were also evaluated
based on their potential from retail and logis-
tics perspectives: Is the design convenient
from a retailer’s point of view, and is it smart
in a logistical sense when taken into account
in the entire life cycle of the package?
The contest webpages present a selec-
tion of the most impressive designs. One of
them will be the winner of Recreate Pack-
aging 2014, but which one? That will be re-
vealed later, in April 2014, and the winning
designs will be presented at Interpack.

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2013 was
granted to Alice Munro, “the master of the
contemporary short story”. Her publish-
ers are naturally riding the wave and print-
ing new editions of her works. In Germany,
Munro’s best-seller “Die Liebe einer Frau”
(The Love of a Good Woman, 1998) was
recently reprinted as a paperback on En-
socoat board and Lux Cream paper from
Stora Enso.
The cover of the paperback is Ensocoat
230 g/m2
, Stora Enso Imatra Mill’s top-class
graphical board. The pages are printed on
Lux Cream 60 g/m2
, a pigmented mechan-
ical book paper grade from Stora Enso’s
Anjala paper mill.
Nobel-quality reading
The publisher of “Die Liebe einer Frau”
is S. Fischer Verlage, and the paperback
was printed by CPI books GmbH in Leck.
The eight stories of the book deal with Mun-
ro’s favourite themes: secrets, love, betrayal
and ordinary lives. The book was awarded
the 1998 Giller Prize and was one of the
selected books in the 2004 Canada Reads.
It also won the 1998 National Book Critics
Circle Award for fiction.
Munro has published many collec-
tions over the years, including Who Do You
Think You Are? (1978), The Moons of Jupi-
ter (1982), Runaway (2004), The View from
Castle Rock (2006) and Too Much Happi-
ness (2009). Her most recent collection is
Dear Life (2012).

Meet Stora Enso at these upcoming events!
In the food and confectionery industry there is concern about mineral oil migration
into the products. Shedding more light on the different views on this issue is es-
sential for appropriate risk management in the packaging value chain.
In the absence of regulatory guidance from authorities, the paper-based pack-
aging chain is proactively conducting research and taking actions to minimize traces
of mineral oil in products. The paper and package converting industries have pre-
pared and launched an Industry Guideline for the safe production of food contact
materials. Traces of mineral oil in packaging are being minimised by eliminating the
use of mineral oil-based solvents where it is under the control of the value chain,
as well as by optimizing recycling processes.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published its opinions on mineral
oil hydrocarbons (MOH) in June 2012 and in August 2013. Recycled paper and
board packaging are cited as sources of mineral oils in food, but other sources are
also mentioned, for example printing inks, lubricants and adhesives used in manu-
facturing plastics, food additives and processing aids, together with release agents
for bakery products and oils for the surface treatment of rice and confectioneries.
In view of the complexity of and lack of information on the composition of min-
eral oil mixtures and the analytical inability to resolve these into single compounds,
the EFSA has stated that it is not meaningful to establish health-based guidance
values on the basis of studies on individual components of MOH.
Although current scientific research does not confirm any risks to the con-
sumer, the paper industry has introduced barrier concepts to eliminate possible
cross-contamination. Functional barriers have been used by some paper and
board packaging companies for many years in a variety of applications, such as
protection for greasy or frozen food. Regarding the mineral oil issue, companies
are developing solutions, such as coatings, laminations or impregnations, to pre-
vent migration, and extensive tests of such solutions are on-going among leading
food manufacturers. A bag-in-box solution is also an option. However, all of these
possible solutions have cost implications and may impact the recyclability of the
packaging. Therefore, an assessment of the entire packaging concept is advisable
in order to assess which solution can be best adapted to the requirements of food
and safety for consumers.
At Stora Enso, we closely follow the development of the German Ordinance
on Mineral Oils. We also participate in the research and discussion on barriers to
eliminate and minimize the migration of mineral oils into the packed contents. Our
intention is to increase knowl-
edge and understanding of the
issue throughout the food pack-
aging chain, and we actively sup-
port continuous research in the
field, with the health and safety of
packaging and consumers fore-
most in our minds.

Tambrite board goes lighter for optimised packaging

  • 1. Tambrite is the best-known carton board brand among European converters, and it is widely used in pharmaceutical, food, chocolate and confectionery packaging. The renowned, fully coated folding boxboard will now be available lighter than ever with a reduced basis weight. The reduction in basis weight provides benefits throughout the supply chain by generating savings in raw materials, less weight in storage and transportation, less packaging waste and fees, and a lower carbon footprint. Thanks to recent product development, the runnability, stiffness, print results and packaging performance of the board are guaranteed to remain as good as ever. Suitable for the most demanding applications “Tambrite will be an even more efficient and environmentally friendly choice, yet it will offer the same outstanding performance in the most demanding applications, such as pharmaceutical packaging with laser or inkjet coding or Braille embossing,” explains Öystein Aksnes, General Packaging Segment Director at Stora Enso. “We are pleased to present Tambrite as the number one choice for brand owners seeking excellent packaging performance and value for money,” says Mr Aksnes. Tambrite is produced at Stora Enso’s Ingerois Mill in Finland. The mill will gradually introduce the new, lower grammage range in production to enable a smooth switch and flexible board deliveries to all customers who use Tambrite in their packages. Stora Enso’s new supply chain management process and effec- tive sheeting services help ensure quick board deliveries according to customers’ individual demands. • 2. Board Paper | March 2014 Replacing plastic in child-proof packaging The new Pandora Box enables the use of cartonboard in a child-proof packaging application. The solution, by A&R Carton, meets the requirements of the pharmaceu- tical industry and responds to the request of the brand owner and consumers for a high-quality appearance and sustainability. The customer wanted A&R Carton to provide the ideal single-piece carton solu- tion for its nicotine gum. The objective was a child-proof solution with barrier function suitable for fully automatic processing. The consumer was to be able to use the carton intuitively and remove the product easily. To ensure a favourable price and flexible deliv- ery, conventional materials were to be used. The solution was created in co-opera- tion between A&R Carton, Stora Enso and other specialized suppliers. “We looked into many different con- structions and solutions during the project until we got everything right. Making a so- lution like this work takes a combination of construction, board, glue and machinery,” says Peter Andersson, the construction designer of the package from A&R Carton. Child-proof solutions made of carton- board are still rare; most are still made of plastic. Cartonboard was, however, the pre- ferred material for this product, and Stora Enso’s special, tear-resistant grade of Enso- card met the strict requirements. All objec- tives were met: security features, improved access to the product, and intuitive use. “We tested many materials and found that this material had both the strength and the flexibility to handle this box,” says Mr Andersson. The Pandora Box won in the Pharma- ceutical category of the 2013 Pro Carton/ ECMA Awards.
  • 3. From the editor In recent months I have had the pleas- ure of celebrating Christmas, New Year and my family members’ birthdays. Dur- ing all these festivities, I noticed the major role that paper and carton play: Beautiful greeting cards, presents in decorative gift wrappings, gift boxes of wine and fancy chocolate boxes all contribute to the fes- tive atmosphere. At the same time, while strolling through the aisles of toy stores and de- partment stores, it was appalling to see all the junk and plastic stuff there. Sorry kids, you won’t get your pet toy from auntie if it is packed in rigid plastic. I also try to avoid greeting cards with unnecessary wrappings. Too often they just hide the poor quality of the paper used! Once the party is over, it is time to clean up and get rid of all the boxes and wrappings. I’m not so bothered by that. Carton burns well, a valuable characteris- tic in Finland’s dark winters, where lighting up a fireplace is one of my regular activi- ties. Of course, most of the cartons go to paperboard recovery after being dropped off at a collection point, for example, on the way to the local supermarket. In Finland, paperboard recovery is arranged in a nationwide network in co- operation with producer organisations in the packaging sector, in which also Stora Enso is a shareholder. This network of re- covery points is currently being reformed, hopefully for the better. Easy recycling is important for all parties involved – con- sumers, producers and brand owners alike. It is also important to get the re- covered materials back into the indus- trial cycle. Renewable packaging is thus a good choice, but there is room for improve- ment. Why are non-renewable inserts and wrappings still being used so much also in cartons? Why does over-packaging and inferior packaging exist? The main reason is the lack of investment in new packaging solutions and packaging lines. Better solutions are available for responsi- ble packaging companies and consumer brand owners. Even a small increase in the share of renewable raw materials in packaging could reduce environmental impact. Why does inferior packaging exist? Sometimes an idea becomes bigger than the sum of its parts. Such is the case with the corrugated logistics drawer used at Volvo’s spare parts warehouse. From this warehouse, thousands upon thousands of spare parts are sent out each day to Volvo owners all over the world. Among the 80,000 article numbers are tubes, air filters, upholstery and many other items. Every part is selected by hand by the ware- house personnel, who naturally have many details to keep track of. Until recently, all parts were stored in open wooden pallets equipped with the de- sired number of pallet collars. Some time ago, however, Volvo started looking for an alternative solution that would enable more efficient use of the storage space. New drawer increases Volvo’s storage capacity by 300% Papyrus Supplies became involved and, in collaboration with Stora Enso Packaging, began developing ideas and prototypes. A large drawer made of heavy-duty corrugated board was chosen as the final solution. This drawer works exactly like a regular drawer, but is deliv- ered folded and stacked for convenient handling. Using this new logistics drawer, Volvo can now fit more article numbers in the same space. In the more high-frequen- cy areas of the warehouse, the company has managed to increase its storage ca- pacity by 300%, thereby enabling Volvo to save space and time – and increase production.
  • 4. Board Paper | March 2014 The jury of the Recreate Packaging 2014 design challenge was impressed by the high quality of the contest entries received from all over the world. The task was to create new packaging solutions for healthcare and beauty care products, serving the needs of consumers who travel a lot. The winners of the contest will be revealed in April. Recreate Packaging is a contest that invites the worldwide design community to rethink current packaging solutions. Its purpose is to push the boundaries of tra- ditional packaging and find new, innovative approaches. Recreate Packaging 2014 is being organised by Stora Enso in co-op- eration with Aalto University’s International Design Business Management program in Finland. The design challenge of Recreate Pack- aging 2014 was to rethink travel packaging. The designers were asked to select three personal and/or health care items and come up with a new packaging solution that deliv- ers the functions of primary and secondary packages – a solution that surpasses the functionality of the conventional packaging and makes travelling more convenient and responsible. The challenge was well received among the global design community, and designers from 32 countries around the world signed up for the contest. This group included both professional packaging designers and de- sign students from various universities. To support the designers in their task, Stora Enso provided them a selection of fibre- based board materials including Ensocoat, microflute and corrugated board. The versa- tility of the materials allowed the designers to use their creativity and come up with new and interesting concepts. The Recreate Packaging jury, consist- ing of professionals with expertise in various fields, such as packaging design and pro- duction as well as logistics and travelling, was impressed by the high quality of the designs. In judging the designs, they paid at- tention to the functionality of the design, how pleasant and easy it was to use, while being aesthetically appealing too. Other judging criteria were the innovative use of the ma- terials and the production potential of the design. The designs were also evaluated based on their potential from retail and logis- tics perspectives: Is the design convenient from a retailer’s point of view, and is it smart in a logistical sense when taken into account in the entire life cycle of the package? The contest webpages present a selec- tion of the most impressive designs. One of them will be the winner of Recreate Pack- aging 2014, but which one? That will be re- vealed later, in April 2014, and the winning designs will be presented at Interpack. www.storaenso.com/recreate Design contest reaches a crescendo!
  • 5. Board Paper | October 2013 The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2013 was granted to Alice Munro, “the master of the contemporary short story”. Her publish- ers are naturally riding the wave and print- ing new editions of her works. In Germany, Munro’s best-seller “Die Liebe einer Frau” (The Love of a Good Woman, 1998) was recently reprinted as a paperback on En- socoat board and Lux Cream paper from Stora Enso. The cover of the paperback is Ensocoat 230 g/m2 , Stora Enso Imatra Mill’s top-class graphical board. The pages are printed on Lux Cream 60 g/m2 , a pigmented mechan- ical book paper grade from Stora Enso’s Anjala paper mill. Nobel-quality reading The publisher of “Die Liebe einer Frau” is S. Fischer Verlage, and the paperback was printed by CPI books GmbH in Leck. The eight stories of the book deal with Mun- ro’s favourite themes: secrets, love, betrayal and ordinary lives. The book was awarded the 1998 Giller Prize and was one of the selected books in the 2004 Canada Reads. It also won the 1998 National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. Munro has published many collec- tions over the years, including Who Do You Think You Are? (1978), The Moons of Jupi- ter (1982), Runaway (2004), The View from Castle Rock (2006) and Too Much Happi- ness (2009). Her most recent collection is Dear Life (2012). Interpack Stand 9B20, hall 9 8–14 May 2014 Düsseldorf www.interpack.com Luxe Pack New York 14–15 May 2014 New York Pier 92 www.luxepacknewyork.com Interpack, the world’s leading trade fair for the packaging industry, will again take place in Düsseldorf, Germany, from 8–14 May 2014. Stora Enso welcomes you to our two-floor stand located in Hall 9 to Re- design the Future with Renewable Pack- aging, as stated in our new customer promise. After seeing Stora Enso’s stand you won’t be short of new ideas about what to do and where to go if you want to rethink your packaging. All of our consumer packaging busi- ness segments – General Packaging, Liquid Packaging Board and Cigarette Board – will be represented. Co-operation for a good cause This year we will also take part in the Innovationparc Packaging Forum ded- icated to the Save Food theme. The Save Food initiative, a partnership be- tween the United Nations Food and Ag- riculture Organisation (FAO) and Messe Düsseldorf, was kicked off at Interpack 2011. In 2014, stakeholders in the food industry, trade, packaging and logistics will be looking for new ways to stem food losses and fight global hunger. The aim is to develop sustainable packaging concepts that reduce food loss around the world. Stora Enso is participating in In- novationparc in co-operation with the European Packaging Design Associa- tion (EPDA). The packaging solutions showcased are created by solution-driv- en project teams consisting of material suppliers, EPDA design agencies and brand owners. Apart from these, an ar- ray of new packaging designs created by the Recreate Packaging design com- petition entrants will be showcased at Stora Enso’s stand. See you at Interpack! Meet Stora Enso at these upcoming events!
  • 6. In the food and confectionery industry there is concern about mineral oil migration into the products. Shedding more light on the different views on this issue is es- sential for appropriate risk management in the packaging value chain. In the absence of regulatory guidance from authorities, the paper-based pack- aging chain is proactively conducting research and taking actions to minimize traces of mineral oil in products. The paper and package converting industries have pre- pared and launched an Industry Guideline for the safe production of food contact materials. Traces of mineral oil in packaging are being minimised by eliminating the use of mineral oil-based solvents where it is under the control of the value chain, as well as by optimizing recycling processes. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published its opinions on mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) in June 2012 and in August 2013. Recycled paper and board packaging are cited as sources of mineral oils in food, but other sources are also mentioned, for example printing inks, lubricants and adhesives used in manu- facturing plastics, food additives and processing aids, together with release agents for bakery products and oils for the surface treatment of rice and confectioneries. In view of the complexity of and lack of information on the composition of min- eral oil mixtures and the analytical inability to resolve these into single compounds, the EFSA has stated that it is not meaningful to establish health-based guidance values on the basis of studies on individual components of MOH. Although current scientific research does not confirm any risks to the con- sumer, the paper industry has introduced barrier concepts to eliminate possible cross-contamination. Functional barriers have been used by some paper and board packaging companies for many years in a variety of applications, such as protection for greasy or frozen food. Regarding the mineral oil issue, companies are developing solutions, such as coatings, laminations or impregnations, to pre- vent migration, and extensive tests of such solutions are on-going among leading food manufacturers. A bag-in-box solution is also an option. However, all of these possible solutions have cost implications and may impact the recyclability of the packaging. Therefore, an assessment of the entire packaging concept is advisable in order to assess which solution can be best adapted to the requirements of food and safety for consumers. At Stora Enso, we closely follow the development of the German Ordinance on Mineral Oils. We also participate in the research and discussion on barriers to eliminate and minimize the migration of mineral oils into the packed contents. Our intention is to increase knowl- edge and understanding of the issue throughout the food pack- aging chain, and we actively sup- port continuous research in the field, with the health and safety of packaging and consumers fore- most in our minds. www.storaenso.com/consumerboard Stora Enso board offering www.storaenso.com/renewablepackaging www.storaenso.com/ensocoat www.storaenso.com/tambrite www.storaenso.com/graphical Publisher: Stora Enso Renewable Packaging, FI-55800 Imatra, Finland. www.storaenso.com/boardpaper Editor: Sanna Heiskanen, sanna.heiskanen@storaenso.com Subscriptions and changes of address: anna-liisa.nuutinen@storaenso.com Material: Ensocoat 2S 220 g/m2 Layout: Onnion Ltd.
