Letters to a young poet
Editor's Notes
Why I’m here? Not the brightest bulb in the corridor, never the top student, I haven’t really achieved greatness in life. Thought really hard about what I wanted to share! It’s a little too early to give career advice right now, so I thought I’d share about stuff that I felt would be applicable to you.Not going to give you career advice – instead tell you about myself & side projects. But I have taken quite an atypical route in choice of career so you can ask me about it if you’re curious as well.Open to questions of any kind! About my job, about dealing with parents, about dealing with friends, about boys? how being 25 is like.

You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.Especially for people – everyone is dealing with their own struggles in life, I don’t believe that there’s any justification to be rude. There’s always a more civilized & better way of dealing with things.
Rules are in place for a reason – it helps to understand what you can or cannot change, and why they are in place. Sometimes you need step back, look at the bigger picture, be the better person and step down. You can question certain things, but for some others, there’s really no point in fighting & wasting time and effort.E.G. I mentioned I really hated Os. I tried really hard to get out of it. It’s never gonna happen!!!
Dance – taken me to many places, helped me meet many people, it helps that wherever you go you will find people who love dancing. I’ve known my best friends through dance. The experiences you go through while pursuing your passions will help mould who you turn out to be as a person – not social acceptance, not your grades. That said, passions will change as time goes by. But that’s okay!
Shared about the internet & how it can help to start social movements. You’re in the best situation to run a social event – you have the support of your school, your fellow students, and it’ll make a great story and be picked up by the press just because you’re young. It’s easy too with wordpress, blogger, tumblr, facebook, twitter. You can do it from your home and collaborate with others without leaving your laptop
Wealth of information and resources you can get onlineAlso… be careful of what you post, & privacy settings. People are watching. All this stuff is searchable. Think twice before posting.
I’m really easily excited by the internet. It’s my haven – if I’m bored, I turn to it. If I need answers, Google is my no1 go to. If I’m in an awkward situation I’ll just talk to others on my phone. But it’s still important to be able to be alone, and be away from technology. You kind of need time alone to think and breathe and to understand yourself + priorities.
You might not know what or who you want to be right now, but you will definitely know what or who you wouldn’t want to be. Ie for me I can’t stand it when people are disrespectful, or when people don’t listen. So I’ll make a conscious effort not to embody these traits.
A lot of things I’ve achieved that I’m proud of, I’ve done without my parents permission. That said, I do things that are really low-risk, which I think is essential while you’re young because essentially, you’re still relying on your parents for a lot. I want to set up a cat café!
