OGC Testbed 11: Delivering on our commitment to the Climate Data Initiative In December 2014 the US White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) released a Policy Fact Sheet titled "Harnessing Climate Data to Boost Ecosystem & Water Resilience." The Fact Sheet includes OGC’s commitment to increase open access to climate change information using open standards. Testbed 11 results are now available delivering on that commitment. The results of this major interoperability testbed contribute to development and refinement of international standards that are critical for the communication and integration of geospatial information. http://www.opengeospatial.org/projects/initiatives/testbed11 • Nine sponsors provided requirements and funding for Testbed 11. • Thirty organizations participated in Testbed 11 by contributing prototypes, engineering reports and participating in a scenario driven demonstration of the technical advances Technical results of Testbed 11 relevant to the Climate Data Initiative include: • Analysis and prediction based on open climate data accessed using open standards • Making predictive models more accessible with OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) • Verifying model predictions using mobile operations, in-situ gauges and social media. World aquaculture production continues to grow and now provides half of all fish for human consumption (FAO, 2016a), but its sustainability is being impacted by climate change, competition for space and natural resources, pollution and environmental degradation. Effective management of the sector requires appropriate and accessible data to inform management decisions. Satellite earth observation technology has developed rapidly in the past five years, with numerous advances in spatial resolution, spectral information, frequency of observation, and cost-effectiveness (open data). The information can inform aquaculture development (strategic planning, zonation and site suitability), aquaculture practice and management (inventory, status, monitoring of the environment and monitoring at the farm level), and aquaculture risk management (disaster risk management, response, recovery, monitoring and assessment). While the growing volume of satellite data represents a unique opportunity for aquaculture, it also poses a major challenge to achieve its full potential in terms of extracting valuable management information. A variety of big-data platforms currently seek to address these issues by bringing together satellite data, environmental data, and analytics processing systems. These platforms include the European Space Agency funded Coastal and Food Security Platforms and Google’s Earth Engine. Each platform has a variety of benefits which are discussed.

Increasingly, GIS is part of the collaboration between computer scientists, information scientists, and domain scientists to solve complex scientific questions. Successfully addressing scientific problems, such as informing regional decision- and policy-making for coastal zone management and marine spatial planning, requires integrative and innovative approaches to analyzing, modeling, and developing extensive and diverse data sets. The current chaotic distribution of available data sets, lack of documentation about them, and lack of easy-to-use access tools and computer modeling and analysis codes are still major obstacles for scientists and educators alike. Contributing solutions to these problems is part of an emerging science agenda at Esri for a range of environmental, conservation, climate and ocean sciences that will be discussed. The talk will highlight some recent projects in progress, including a new global map of ecological land units, new tools to support multidimensional scientific data, continued work on an ocean basemap, and more.

Unstructured data is everywhere - in the form of posts, status updates, bloglets or news feeds in social media or in the form of customer interactions Call Center CRM. While many organizations study and monitor social media for tracking brand value and targeting specific customer segments, in our experience blending the unstructured data with the structured data in supplementing data science models has been far more effective than working with it independently. In this talk we will show case an end-to-end topic and sentiment analysis pipeline we've built on the Pivotal Greenplum Database platform for Twitter feeds from GNIP, using open source tools like MADlib and PL/Python. We've used this pipeline to build regression models to predict commodity futures from tweets and in enhancing churn models for telecom through topic and sentiment analysis of call center transcripts. All of this was possible because of the flexibility and extensibility of the platform we worked with.
