1. Mightier than the Sword
On January 20, President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the new integrated
terminal at Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport .
The Airports Authority of India had hired a Thai-Indian consortium, Italian-
Thai Development Public Co. Ltd-ITD Cementation, to build the new terminal
which was to feature segments from classic Bengali culture , folklore and
literature and serve as a tribute to the Bengali heritage.
Following is a snapshot of the roof of the newly constructed terminal .
Identify the design and what exactly it is supposed to be .

2. “Oh , it’s a bit of this , and a bit of that . The rest is
magic , you SEE ?”
The Gustav Gun was a German railway gun. It was developed in the late 1930s by Krupp as
siege artillery for the explicit purpose of destroying the main forts of the French Maginot
Line, the strongest fortifications then in existence. The fully assembled gun weighed nearly
1,350 tonnes, and could fire shells weighing seven tonnes to a range of 47 kilometres .
It was the largest-calibre rifled weapon ever used in combat, the heaviest mobile artillery
piece ever built in terms of overall weight, and fired the heaviest shells of any artillery piece.
Said to be almost immune to aircraft fire and artillery bombardment , the Gustav had one
fatal flaw which could allow it to be destroyed by just a simple chemical reaction that could
be initiated in seconds by a single enemy soldier.
Which reaction / combination of chemicals could achieve this ?
The Thermite
Reaction
3. Where it all began
The following slide shows one of scientific history’s most famous pictures ,
almost self-deprecatingly named simply as Photograph 51 .
It was to become the keystone evidence for one of the 21st century’s stellar
achievements and equally generate great controversy .
What was the discovery and why was it controversial , especially with
respect to Photo 51 ?
The Collection
DNA structure by James Watson and Francis Crick
The controversy was over the fact that almost all the primary evidence ,
including photo 51 was collected by Rosalind Franklin , who was never
felicitated for her contributions , whereas Watson , Wilkins and Crick went on
to win the Nobel.
4. Evil in shining armour
According to various character histories , he obtained an item from
his abusive father that would employ it in a perverse nightly
“game” that always ended with a beating. This would instill in him ,
his lifelong struggle with freewill and his eventual inability to make
choices on his own . This reflected in other facets of his life as he
staged events to happen at 10.22 pm.
Contrary to his popular depiction in the film , this character was
“created” due to acid and not oil.
Who am I alluding to ?
Harvey Dent /

5. The Labours of Hercules
Put Funda . That’s all .
Why did Pirate Bay change their logo in the fashion shown on the
following slide.
Tell me the logic , and part points will be doled out .
The Stockholm district court ordered the two main domains used by
Pirate Bay , namely , .thepiratebayse and .piratebayse to be seized
for copyright violation.
Taking a cue from the myth of the Lernaean Hydra , which could
grow two more heads each time one was cut off , Pirate Bay
instituted redirects from these two domain names to 6 other domain
names across the world , thereby avoiding prosecution .
6. Tu-Tu-Mey-Mey
The Yasukuni shrine in Japan has been the epicenter of a fair amount of
controversies primarily due to the fact that several of the Japanese
“martyrs” buried therein are accused of heinous war crimes during WW II
against the Chinese.
Recently , Japanese PM Shinzo Abe’s visit to this place , attracted an op-ed
from the Chinese ambassador to the UK which ran as “If militarism is like
the haunting X of Japan , the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo is a kind of Y ,
representing the darkest parts of the nation’s soul” . The Japanese
Ambassador to the UK countered by writing “China risks becoming Asia’s

One of modern day research’s most indispensable tools , X was originally
brought into lab research without the source / origin’s knowledge or
consent. Since then , X has gone on to become one of the most enduring
and symbolic research tools as well as has inspired a film and a best selling
book (shown on the next slide)
The immense utility of X has found application in research into cancer,
AIDS, the effects of radiation and toxic substances, gene mapping, and
countless other scientific pursuits. X has been used to test human
sensitivity to tape, glue, cosmetics, and many other products. Scientists
have grown some 20 tons of X and there are almost 11,000 patents involving

At the height of its power, Pablo Escobar's Medellin cartel supplied 80% of
the world's cocaine and smuggled 15 tons of cocaine into the US per day.
They would often write off 10% of their annual revenue , or $ 2.1 BILLION as
damages due to rodents and water spoilage.
However , they also faced a rather elementary problem with the excess of

"The X" were a group of prominent Jewish-Hungarian scientists (mostly, but not
exclusively, physicists and mathematicians) who immigrated to the United States
in the early half of the 20th century. They included, among others, Theodore von
Kármán, John von Neumann, Paul Halmos, Eugene Wigner, Edward Teller,
George Pólya, and Paul Erdős.
Since they all spoke English with a strong accent they were considered outsiders
in American society. The Hungarian scientists were seemingly superhuman in
intellect, spoke an incomprehensible native language, and came from a small
obscure country. This led to them being christened X, a name which they adopted
after finding it humorous.

as well as the Information Technology Act, however the Allahabad High
Court stated the FIR as premature.
What controversial product is this ?

Paul Erdős was a Hungarian mathematician. He was one of the most prolific
mathematicians of the 20th century. He was known both for his social practice of
mathematics (he engaged more than 500 collaborators) and for his eccentric
lifestyle. He devoted his waking hours to mathematics, even into his later years—
indeed, his death came only hours after solving a geometry problem in a
conference in Warsaw.
Erdős published around 1,500 mathematical papers during his lifetime, a figure
that remains unsurpassed. He firmly believed mathematics to be a social activity,
living an itinerant lifestyle with the sole purpose of writing mathematical papers
with other mathematicians.
He coined the term Erdos Number . What is it a measure of ?
The Erdős number describes the
"collaborative distance" between
mathematician Paul Erdős and
another person, as measured by
authorship of mathematical papers.

The term X effect stems from an anecdote set at the time of British rule of
colonial India. The British government was concerned about the number of
X in Delhi. The government therefore offered a bounty for every dead X.
Initially this was a successful strategy as large numbers were killed for the
reward. Eventually, however, enterprising people began to breed X for the
income. When the government became aware of this, the reward program
was scrapped, causing the X breeders to set the now-worthless Xs free. As a
result, the wild X population further increased. The apparent solution for the
problem made the situation even worse. The X effect occurs when an
attempted solution to a problem actually makes the problem worse. This is
an instance of unintended consequences. The term is used to illustrate the
causes of incorrect stimulation in economy and politics.

  • 7. 2. “Oh , it’s a bit of this , and a bit of that . The rest is magic , you SEE ?” The Gustav Gun was a German railway gun. It was developed in the late 1930s by Krupp as siege artillery for the explicit purpose of destroying the main forts of the French Maginot Line, the strongest fortifications then in existence. The fully assembled gun weighed nearly 1,350 tonnes, and could fire shells weighing seven tonnes to a range of 47 kilometres . It was the largest-calibre rifled weapon ever used in combat, the heaviest mobile artillery piece ever built in terms of overall weight, and fired the heaviest shells of any artillery piece. Said to be almost immune to aircraft fire and artillery bombardment , the Gustav had one fatal flaw which could allow it to be destroyed by just a simple chemical reaction that could be initiated in seconds by a single enemy soldier. Which reaction / combination of chemicals could achieve this ?

  • 10. 3. Where it all began The following slide shows one of scientific history’s most famous pictures , almost self-deprecatingly named simply as Photograph 51 . This reflected in other facets of his life as he staged events to happen at 10.22 pm. Contrary to his popular depiction in the film , this character was “created” due to acid and not oil. Who am I alluding to ?

  • 21. 6. Tu-Tu-Mey-Mey The Yasukuni shrine in Japan has been the epicenter of a fair amount of controversies primarily due to the fact that several of the Japanese “martyrs” buried therein are accused of heinous war crimes during WW II against the Chinese. • 50. 1. B. "The X" were a group of prominent Jewish-Hungarian scientists (mostly, but not exclusively, physicists and mathematicians) who immigrated to the United States in the early half of the 20th century. They included, among others, Theodore von Kármán, John von Neumann, Paul Halmos, Eugene Wigner, Edward Teller, George Pólya, and Paul Erdős. Since they all spoke English with a strong accent they were considered outsiders in American society. The Hungarian scientists were seemingly superhuman in intellect, spoke an incomprehensible native language, and came from a small obscure country. This led to them being christened X, a name which they adopted after finding it humorous.

What controversial product is this ?
  • 55.
  • 57. 2. B. Paul Erdős was a Hungarian mathematician. He was one of the most prolific mathematicians of the 20th century. He was known both for his social practice of mathematics (he engaged more than 500 collaborators) and for his eccentric lifestyle. He devoted his waking hours to mathematics, even into his later years— indeed, his death came only hours after solving a geometry problem in a conference in Warsaw. Erdős published around 1,500 mathematical papers during his lifetime, a figure that remains unsurpassed. He firmly believed mathematics to be a social activity, living an itinerant lifestyle with the sole purpose of writing mathematical papers with other mathematicians. He coined the term Erdos Number . What is it a measure of ?
  • 58.
  • 59. The Erdős number describes the "collaborative distance" between mathematician Paul Erdős and another person, as measured by authorship of mathematical papers.

  • 78. 5. B The term X effect stems from an anecdote set at the time of British rule of colonial India. The British government was concerned about the number of X in Delhi. The government therefore offered a bounty for every dead X. Initially this was a successful strategy as large numbers were killed for the reward. Eventually, however, enterprising people began to breed X for the income. When the government became aware of this, the reward program was scrapped, causing the X breeders to set the now-worthless Xs free. As a result, the wild X population further increased. The apparent solution for the problem made the situation even worse. The X effect occurs when an attempted solution to a problem actually makes the problem worse. This is an instance of unintended consequences. The term is used to illustrate the causes of incorrect stimulation in economy and politics.
