KATHAK
• Kathak is one of the eight major forms of
Indian classical dance. It is the classical
dance form from Uttar Pradesh. The origin
of Kathak is traditionally attributed to the
traveling bards in ancient northern India
known as Kathakars or storytellers
• Uttar Pradesh is the place where Kathak,
one of the six foremost classical dances of
India, flourished. The word Katha, from
which the name is derived, meansKathak.
The main genre of north Indian classical
dance, developed under the Nawabs, the
main theme being that of Krishna
cavourting with the gopis
RASLILA The Raslila, also rendered the Rasalila or the Ras
dance, is part of a traditional story described in
Hindu texts such as the Bhagavata Purana and Gita
Govinda, where Krishna dances with Radha and
the gopis of Vraja.
The Raslila was the act where Lord Krishna
danced and sang with the Gopi's on the banks of
river Krishna within the Vrindavan region.
Raslila also explores the relation of Krishna and
Radha whose incorruptible love for each other is
revered to this very day. The folk dance is
performed byThe Raslila art form is particularly
famous in western Uttar Pradesh and portrays the

GHOOMAR
• Ghoomar or ghumar is a traditional folk dance of
Rajasthan. It was the Bhil tribe who performed it to
worship Goddess Saraswati which was later
embraced by other Rajasthani communities. The
dance is chiefly performed by veiled women who
wear flowing dresses called ghaghara
• Ghoomar includes the intriguing circular movements

LAVANI
• Lavani is a genre of music popular in
Maharashtra, India. Lavani is a combination of
traditional song and dance, which particularly
performed to the beats of Dholki, a percussion
instrument. Lavani is noted for its powerful
rhythm. Lavani has contributed substantially
to the development of Marathi folk theatre

complemented by song. It is performed on the

KAJARI
• Kajari is a folk song and dance genre of
India. It is a Hindustani classical music
genre, performed during the rainy season
usually late June to September when lush
greenery reappears and agricultural labor
begins again
• Kajri is derived from the Awadhi word Kajra,
or Kohl, maybe a genre of semi-classical
singing, originating from the Indian
subcontinent, popular in Uttar Pradesh
• Kajri is a peasant dance offered as
thanksgiving after a good crop. Rai and
Shaira : Rai and Shaira are folk dances of
the Bundelkhand region
• Kajri; Kaharwa; Nauka Jhakkad; Bhajan;

CHERAW
• Cheraw dance is a traditional cultural dance
performed in Mizoram, India, consisting of
mostly six to eight people holding pairs of
bamboo staves on another horizontally
placed bamboo on the ground
• It is a classical dance form of Assamese. It
originated from Vaishnavism (this was
Krishna-centered) and was attributed to the
15th century by the saint
• Folk dance is a dance form that was
emerged from the local traditions of the
respective states, geographic religions, and
their ethnic culture

• Fugdi is a folk dance performed by
the womenfolk of some communities
of Konkanies in the Konkan coastal
region of Goa and Maharashtra

festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and
Vrata or towards the end of other
dances like Dhalo
• Fugdi. It's a Goan dance that's done
in the Konkan. This dance style,

• Nautanki is a form of street play or skit that
is popular in northern side of India
especially in the states of Bihar and Uttar
Pradesh

SOHAR
• Sohar is one of the most popular forms of folk songs
performed in Uttar Pradesh even today. These songs are
related to the religious culture prevalent in the areas.
Sohar is predominantly performed during childbirth.
Bhikari Thakur is usually credited with the popularisation
of folk songs in the Bhojpuri region. Notable names
include Mahender Misir, Anjan, Sharda Sinha as well as
Laxman Pathak. Harikirtan is also a very religiously
associated folk song sung in Uttar Pradesh. Sohar is
celebrated as a song that welcomes life and celebrates
new beginnings. Notable names include Virendra Bharati
and Kalpana Patwari in recent times. Sohar is
predominantly sung and performed by women on the
occasion of birth which is seen as an auspicious moment
in the family. The importance of Sohar in the everyday
lives of the people is reflected in the popularity of this
tradition. Sohar is intrinsically linked with family life and
is a widely practiced musical tradition practiced in Uttar
Pradesh. Customs and traditions are an important part of
the lives of many people in Uttar Pradesh, particularly in
rural areas. Therefore, folk songs like sohar were able to
become a part of the countryside cultural tradition

KAHARWA
• Kaharwa is a well-known taal or
system of singing style in India
that originated in Uttar Pradesh.
The Kaharwa taal is a famous
taal with variations such as
qawwali, and dhumali and is
divided into 2 with 8 beats. It is a
caste-based folk song that is
performed by the Kahar caste.
The Kaharwa is a ceremonial
song sung during weddings.

Sadavajra Saranga
• This form of music is sung for the
folk-stones.
• Apart from these folk songs,
Gazals and Thumaris (a form of
semi-classical music, which was
once confined to royal courts)
have been quite popular in the
Awadh region and so have been
Qawwalis (a form of Sufi poetry,
which developed from Bhajans)
and Marsiyas. Both of them reflect
a strong influence of the folk
music of Uttar Pradesh
