Welcome at Coolblue! As many of you probably know, started in 1999 by these 3 people.
They came up with the idea for Coolblue in a pub called “De Dijk”, at table 7. Which by the way, is bought by the personnel and is currently in a meeting room called…. “De Dijk”.So, pay attention during the tour later on ;)
The entire business plan was faily simple: Get rich and become the best!
Tafel 7! The actual table is bought as a gift for our CEO’s a couple of years ago and is currently present in the “de Dijk” meeting room!
And so they started!
After creating the first couple of invoices in Office (Word/Excel), they started building their own IT systems for this (Delphi), just like the website.
We want to control everything that impacts our customers.
And these are the people that did it. Yes, this was the entire Coolblue Tech in 2004. In the picture:
1 Ops engineer, 3 backenders and 3 frontenders.
At Coolblue we build and maintain a lot of our own IT systems, not only the website is custom, but also a lot the internal systems (Customers, Orders, Invoicing, Stock, Logistics, Purchasing etc)
For this presentation we focus on the “e-commerce” part, or the web-related part of the system, and the developers.
So, for as a starting point in here, for every Ops in Coolblue, there are 3 Devs.
With all this growth we had to change our mindset, about not doing EVERYTHING ourselves, but doing what brings value to our customers. We do things ourselves because we want full control of the customer experience so we can do it better.
Now that you know the story of coolblue, lets rewind 18 months to see where we were with logging.
So we spent a while building a new set of redis and logstash instances and defining some log ingestion configurations to take logs from the applications inside the backoffice
But then ofcourse teams that had hardware and software running in the offices wanted to get on board.

We’re moving to the cloud, the content of this evenement,
We relize we have created a monster that we need to manage..
The monster looks like this.. It was very complicated and very hard to get more applications and services online and scale.
So what did we do about it.

As splunk makes it so easy to explore and search logs, developers quickly see the value of improving their logs and logging more, so what we are logging gets better and better.

Add something which says rethink your logging pipeline to maximize value
