Lantern Hotel have two exit way, one

level the occupants normally use exit

entry in the front entrance cause
hardship for the vendor to work and
lead to unpleasant scene and disturb
the occupant flow.

Chinese used local tranditional materials as a basic of shophouses, it is clearly preview from the existing structure of Lantern Hotel. The architects of Lantern

The shophouse front facade is narrow

shophouse pedestrian way called ‘’5

design of the building. The five-foot
recessed walkways are designed to
provide a shield for pedestrians from
the sun and rain.
Perhaps the architects have
discovered the brick laying pattern
from the shophouse facade that
displays on Lantern Hotel facade in
form of micro-scale formula and
creating a breathable surface building
skin for Lantern Hotel exterior facade.

A Lantern function as a mobile lighting
that originates as a protective shield for
the light source. It prevents the light
source extinguishing via the external
protective layer while allowing the
oxygen supply for the combustion of a
light source. Lanterns may also be
used for signaling like a beacon.
In Lantern Hotel, a similar concept of
protective enclosure is articulate in the
architectural design. In day and night,
the exterior breathable treament layer

Strategy Responce
Basically the strategies applied are paramount to its functionality and practicality.
Below are few aspect that this strategies responce to:
1. Centralized courtyard - Natural dayligting and Vetilation
2. Linear space configuration - Full utilization of spaces available
3. Centralized courtyard & Linear configuration - No death end corner for fire protection running path

Multiple linear form grid circulation strategies that responce to 67 % of single-loaded arrangement that allow for a naturally lit and ventilated
corridor. 33% of double-loaded corridor has partial benefit of the natural lit and ventilation from the single-loaded corridor. As a result, it save
energy consumption for the building.

The interior of the room is physically‘’closed’’from the courtyard space but visually

Heavy vs Light
THREE-DIMENSIONAL SPATIAL COMPOSITIONS
L A N T E R N H O T E L , C H I N A T O W N 51
S C H E M A T I C A N A L Y S I S
Heavy
Overall, visually light space dominate most of the spaces of the interior.
Visually weighted and heavy material like timber floor, red brick walls and
dark brown brick walls are distributed less in the interior of the space relative
to the visually light material. Built-in cabinet, timber door and accent interior
colour work as a mediator for the contrast of heavy vs light materials.
