We are forming this triangle – to guide (as mentors) and to learn from (as

CHAOS / FORM / SIMPLICITY is an intriguing process that can be

in deepening ourselves. ‘The Process’ doesn’t separate ‘personal

The most important role of any coach is one of a good and active listener, absorbing the energies and signals of
the client, reflecting upon and understanding the processes (both of the client and what is mirrored back at the
coach) and challenges that are being dealt with.

A Responsibility Coach™ is not there to fix ‘the problem’. Responsibility Coaching™ is holistic guidance –
offering an opportunity to seek beyond what is ‘obvious’ to see and to create own solutions along the way.
Each journey is different! What applies to one person does not apply to the next one.

In earlier days one would hire a scout to support one on journeys into the unknown—a scout excellent in
following traces and reading the signs of nature….

RESPONSIBILITY COACH™ & TRAINER

The educational path of a Responsibility Coach™ & Trainer is based upon prior training,
commitment and unique ways of implementation. The continued journey of equipping
oneself cannot be measured within a certain timeframe or in any monetary value.

What will determine when you are ready is your ability to implement responsibility in your
everyday life and your ability to guide others – gently – to implement responsibility in
their everyday lives.

- A certified Responsibility Coach ™ & Trainer is authorized to educate Responsibility
Coaches™.

- A certified Responsibility Coach™ & Trainer furthermore has the opportunity to
become an independent SmilingOne Ambassador - opening a SmilingOne Learning
Centre in a designated area: city/country.

Karina Andersen (Founder) and Vivian Tatschke have the sole authority to certify a
Responsibility Coach™ and a Trainer.

Since January 2008 the SmilingOne ONE SOCIETY People and Community Building Programmes have been echoing
their impact in South African Prisons and throughout the Western Cape. The SmilingOne Team of Guides
(Responsibility Coaches™) inspire change and responsible living by availing themselves as Students and Explorers of
Life, inviting their programme participants to explore/learn alongside them… unlocking potential!

The programme has in 2010 expanded to South African Townships to create a platform for personal valuebased
leadership development, involving youth, families and the community as a whole!

THE CIRCLE OF CHANGE PROCESS

1st pillar: I SHARE OPENLY
A Puzzle Piece: THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL – A journey of Self Discovery. This pillar can be spiced
with other puzzle pieces that assist the journey within (such as silencing, meditation, yoga, breathing
etc.)

2nd pillar: I CARE DEEPLY (CARING Programmes)
A Puzzle Piece: THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL facilitated by coaches/students giving one day a week
voluntary.
Other puzzle pieces: Aim in this pillar is to utilize the potential of the participants in Pillar 1 and inspire
them to give of themselves unconditionally to the community they find themselves in – from here
caring programmes shape.

3rd pillar: I AM A WONDERFUL RESOURCE (Skills Development Programmes)

Other puzzle pieces: Once we begin to share n care we also begin to understand the magnitude of our
potential and that we are amazing resources in the greater puzzle of life – all unique puzzle pieces
contributing to the whole. In this pillar we encourage skills development (first and foremost we utilize
the potential within the community to facilitate processes and we invite in facilitators from outside to
assist the learning/growth). We strongly believe in sustainability and that everything brought to the
community must be able to stay and be nurtured within the community for continuous learning
and growth / expansion.

ONE SOCIETY / THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL PRISONS

The beginning of the ONE SOCIETY Initiative
Brandvlei Maximum Prison
We were given the opportunity to connect with a group of inmates in the Brandvlei Maximum Prison. They
called themselves the Group of Hope (GOH) (www.groupofhope.co.za) and were all actively involved with the
GOH skills development programmes. Sixteen men became involved in THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL (January
2008). It was our wish to assist the group to continue the path of change they had chosen for themselves and
guide them to discover their ability (through sharing and caring) to bring it to a whole new level by adding the
ingredient of THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL – A journey within and beyond...

The combination of this profound journey in Circles of Sharing, caring deeply (giving unconditionally through
caring programmes) and understanding what a wonderful resource they were (skills development) made a
profound difference for them and for everyone else around them. The process of change with these men
inspired THE CIRCLE OF CHANGE approach and is today used in all SmilingOne ONE SOCIETY projects.

Today (2010) hundreds of inmates are walking the path of change in Brandvlei Maximum, Goodwood Medium,
Worcester Medium men prisons and in the Juvenile and Medium section of Brandvlei Medium Prison.

The SmilingOne Team facilitates THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL, THE RESPONSIBILITY COACH™ EDUCATION and
functions as a coordinator of ONE SOCIETY/CIRCLES OF CHANGE, inviting other community members to add
their unique ingredients.

ONE SOCIETY / THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL Re-Integration

In October 2009 Chris Plum, who since October 2008 had been part of THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL within
Goodwood Medium prison, was the first of our participants to be released. Chris was determined to bring
this valuable and life-changing tool with him back into society and add value to his family and his
community in Guguletu.

SmilingOne started the first support group in Guguletu to assist ex-offenders to build the bridge from prison

…back into society and at the same time inspire youth, families and communities to walk hand in hand as we
build a healthy, green and safe society.

We give the Youth a holistic tool to establish a platform of responsibility within their community and school
environment – strengthening the individual as well as the group. With a simple and outstanding concept we
inspire a fun, challenging and ‘out of the box’ journey through the Concept of Responsibility – a playful and
guided way to a unique understanding!

The responsibility awareness process will be an essential ingredient in the educational path and
development of children and youth as well as teachers, parents and a whole community.
