INTRODUCTION
General
In the designing of Road Pavement, Flexible Pavement Designing is preferred always over
all other rigid pavements. As-
• they can be strengthened and improved in stages with the growth of traffic.
• less expensive in regards to their initial cost and maintenance.
• flexing gives less bounce, giving more grip on the road.
• Less wear to the tyre.
This Properties of the road is mainly achieved due to its surface bituminous pavement. It is
the surface coating over the Bituminous Mixes.

The Bituminous Mixes which were been practiced in early days before
SMA mix. It was not that as effective compared to Stone Matrix Asphalt
(SMA). SMA provides better rutting resistance, resist deformation in high
temperature region, greater resistance to fatigue, increased durability.
SMA has reduced sensitivity and resistance to moisture, resists crack at
low temperature. It has shown better resistance in plastic deformation
than that of conventional Bituminous Mixes.

SMA Mix
Generally Asphalt is a mixture of coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, filler and binder.
Where all constituents are mixed, placed and compacted at high temperature. HMA
can be Dense Graded mixes (DGM) known as Bituminous Concrete (BC) or gap
graded known as Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). SMA requires stabilizing additives,
mineral fibres or polymers to prevent drain down of the mix
PRESENTATION TITLE 9
Role of Fibers in SMA
Fibres are included in SMA mixtures as a stabilizing additive to
prevent excessive drain down, Also fibres typically influence the mixture
performance of stone matrix asphalt (SMA) such as strength, stability,
durability, rutting resistance, fatigue life and water sensitivity at high
temperature. The common types of fibre used in SMA include cellulose
and mineral fibres
PRESENTATION TITLE 10
Bamboo Fibers
A fibre that is readily available in nature. less cost effective comparing to other
non-conventional fibres has been used as stabilizer. It is cellulose fibre
extracted from naturally available Bamboo stem. It has high strength in fibre
direction, greater tensile, flexural and impact strength. Thinness degree of
fibre can easily be obtained from it
PRESENTATION TITLE 11
Slag as Aggregate
Slag is a by-product of the industry, and is reported to exhibit great potential
as a replacement for natural aggregates in road construction. Slag aggregates
have been reported to retain heat considerably longer than natural
aggregates. The heat retention characteristics of slag aggregates can be
advantageous for SMA construction, as less gas (energy) is used during the
execution of SMA works. Based on high frictional and abrasion resistance,
steel slag is used widely in industrial roads, intersections and parking areas
where high wear resistance is required.
PRESENTATION TITLE 12
Objective
PRESENTATION TITLE 13
• To determine Stability, Flow Value, VA, VMA of SMA mixes using Bamboo fibers
using stone aggregate and slag aggregate.
• To compare the result of different SMA mixes with & without fibers
• To obtain suitability of Bamboo fibers over other conventional fibers
PRESENTATION TITLE 14
Methodology
• Observing values of SMA using Stone aggregate with & without fiber
