The aim of this study was to prepare and to characterize the structure of Al2O3–3YSZ composites with 5% TiO2 addition as well as the surface modification upon treatments with SnF2 and NaBF4, respectively. SEM micrographs showed the controlled densification of the composites as an effect of 3YSZ and TiO2 addition to alumina matrix. By FTIR and XRD, the characteristics of Al-O and Zr-O vibrations, respectively, the diffractions lines related to a-corundum and zirconia in tetragonal phase were discussed. Qualitative and quantitative results obtained by XPS and ATR FTIR demonstrated that the proposed materials are more sensitive to SnF2 than to NaBF4 treatment.

Tempyo labelled ovalbumin at different pH values was prepared and investigated using Raman and SERS spectroscopy. Raman spectra of tempyo labelled ovalbumin in the pH range from 6.7 to 11 were compared to those of the corresponding free ovalbumin. In the basic pH range from 6.7 to 11 the molecular conformation was found to be unaffected by the tempyo presence. Adsorption versatility to the colloidal Ag particles of pure- and tempyo labelled ovalbumin was also found to be unchanged in this basic pH range. As the SERS binding site of protein the a-helix conformation is favourable.

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy was applied in this work, in order to get information about the adsorption behavior of the title macromolecule with respect to different surfaces. In this case, the silver substrate can be considered as artificial substrate and the investigations regarding the mechanisms of adsorption can be useful in order to elucidate the active site properties of this enzyme. Our purpose is to study the adsorption mechanism of hyaluronidase onto silver nanoparticles and PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) substrates as well as qualitative and quantitative aspects regarding perturbations of protein secondary structure (α-helix, β-sheet and unordered structures) upon adsorption, using deconvolution techniques.

SEM microscopy and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy were employed in order to evaluate the properties of the surface layer after immersion in simulated body fluid.

Polymer-ceramic composites based on polymethyl methacrylate are widely used in orthopaedics as suture materials and fixation devices due to their biocompatibility and ability to support bony growth (osteoconductive) and also bone bioactive (to form a calcium phosphate layer on its surface). In this study are compared the microstructure, bioactivity and biocompatibility of two different types of biocomposites: BIOLOS3®and ANTIBIOTIC SIMPLEX®. They are investigated in vitro in simulated body fluid using electrochemical measurements, SEM microscopy and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy in order to evaluate the properties of the surface layer.

Abstract. The study was carried out to investigate the composition and type of different urinary stones upon application of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. ATR FTIR spectra revealed the marker bands of a mixed stone composition containing calcium oxalate monohydrate/ calcium carbonate, respectively calcium oxalate monohydrate/cystine. The surface morphology of the samples and elemental analysis was performed by SEM-EDAX confirming the presence of oxalate, carbonate and cystine in the samples. Combination of FTIR spectroscopy and SEM-EDAX allowed quantitative and qualitative evaluation of components, the spatial distribution and the percent of major and trace elements present in a single sample.
