The Folk or Traditional Forms of India
The Indian folk or traditional theatre is a rich and important element of the
cultural heritage of India. It incorporates elements from music, dance, poetry,
mime, religion and even arts and crafts. It is a reflection of people’s beliefs,
social practices and customs and traditions.
India is known for its rich cultural heritage. Indian dance is one of the
most revered identities of our culture. Dance in India comprises numerous
styles of dances, generally classified as classical or folk. The dance forms
have originated from different parts of India as per the local tradition.
List of such 5 dance forms of India are:
1.Garba(Gujarat)
About
It is a type of Indian dance form
mainly performed at festivals and
other special occasions in Gujarat
state, India. The dance is
performed a clay lantern called
“Garbha deep”. It is also spelled
as garaba.
Origin/History
Garba originated from the Sanskrit word
Garbha meaning the womb. The dance
form originated in the villages of Gujarat,
where it was performed in communal
gathering spaces in the center of the
village with the entire community
participating.
Significance
Garba dance celebrate the
honour of womanhood,
and pay respect to mother
goddesses. In Gujarat the
dance marks a girl's first
menstrual cycle and, later,
her imminent marriage.
2.Bharatanatyam(Tamil Nadu)
About
Bharatanatyam is one of the
oldest and most popular forms of
classical dance that originated in
Tanjore district in Tamil Nadu in
South India.
Origin/History
Bharatanatyam dance is
almost 2,000 years old. It is
believed that the dance was
revealed by Lord Brahma to
Bharata, a famous sage who
then codified this sacred
dance in a Sanskrit text
called the Natya Shastra.
Significance
A Bharatanatyam dance tells a
story. In Indian mythology, there
are three main gods: Brahma,
Vishnu and Shiva. It is said that
Shiva, the lord of dance, created
Bharatanatyam.
3.Bhangra(Punjab)
About
Bhangra is a type of
traditional folk dance
originated from Punjab. It is
done in the season of
harvesting. It is especially
associated with the vernal
Vaisakhi festival.
Origin/History
A long ago, Punjabi-Sikh
farmers started to use
different farming activities
to create a dance form to
celebrate food-growing,
harvesting and relationship
to the land, which later they
starting calling Bhangra.
Significance
Many people showcase
bhangra as a source of joy and
entertainment at weddings,
parties, and all sorts of
celebrations. Many people do
it as a source of exercise, it is
an excellent substitution to the
gym.
4.Ghoomar(Rajasthan)
About
Ghoomar is a traditional folk
dance of Rajasthan. It is
chiefly performed by veiled
women who wear flowing
dresses like ghagra and also
take ghoonghat. The word
ghoomna describes the
twirling movement of the
dancers.
Origin/History
The dance is known to be
the characteristic dance of
the Bhil tribe. It was the Bhil
tribe who performed it to
worship Goddess Sarasvati
which was later embraced
by other Rajasthani
communities.
Significance
It wasn't just an act of
dancing and singing but
was also meant to be
symbolic of femininity.
Young girls took part in
this dance, making it
known to everyone that
they were stepping into
womanhood.
5.Manipuri(Manipur)
About
The Manipuri Dance, also
known as Manipuri Raas
Leela, is one of the eight
major Indian classical
dance forms, from the state
of Manipur.This dance
drama is entirely religious
and is considered to be a
purely spiritual experience.
Origin/History
Manipuri is an ancient classical
dance form 18ty century. It was in
the reign of King Bhagyachandra that the
popular Rasleela dances of Manipur
originated. It is said, that this 18th
century philosopher king conceived this
complete dance form along with its
unique costume and music in a dream.
Significance
The dance form expresses the
spiritual values. It is celebrated
during festivals and weddings
among the Manipuri peoples. This
dance form is formed in the form
of a dance drama and its central
theme is based on the love stories
of Lord Krishna and Radha, while
other themes are also showcased.
