this is the 1st group of kids I began teaching in 1992 at an innercity church. I was only a sophomore in high school and no one else wanted to teach this group of about 100 kids so a few of us volunteered. My students came with very complicated backgrounds. Their parents were teenagers, drug addicts, gang members, alcoholics, abusive, in prisons, absentee, and more. However, I didn’t see my students’ problems when they walked in the classroom. I saw their future and my role in shaping it but being my first class I was scared with the enormous challenges I faced. I could not and would not fail them.
Throughout my career, I needed help! How many of you need help? How many of you in your first year of teaching know you will want help quickly and from experienced educators in the field? How many of you would like this quickly while you face problems such as classroom management, communicating with parents effectively, or integrating new technology you were never trained in effectively? Throughout your career you will face many problems and like the Beatles say it is great to get a little help from our friends!
It began as a simple blog post explaining the idea and asking my very few readers because I had been blogging less than a year to join me. I thought maybe 8 people maximum would join but now its nearly 8000 participants 2 years later. I am still blown away by it all.
