Recycling at Elizabeth Carter Brooks Elementary
New Bedford, Mass. – The Charlton College of Business at
UMASS Dartmouth has partnered with the Greater New Bedford
Regional Refuse Management District to spread awareness.
During this fall semester many teams were formed to help the
community. Team #2, also know as The Milky Way, was formed
to implement a milk carton recycling program. The Milky Way
have been working with Elizabeth Carter Brooks Elementary
in New Bedford, MA. During the 4th and 5th grade lunch period, the students were dumping their milk
out in a bucket and then throwing it in the trash. The team was able to implement a new strategy,
which involved them pouring out the remaining milk, rip open the milk cart, and then disposing it into
the new recycling bin. Marissa Perez-Dormitzer, District Recycling Coordinator, supplied the team with
three 14-gallon recycling bins with liners and a 95-gallon recycling cart. The Milky Way engaged the
students in a recycling themed bingo game and a milk carton themed poster contest. The winners of
the contest received a gift card donated by Carabiner’s in New Bedford. The children took a pledge to
continue their best efforts in the milk carton-recycling program. The Milky Way plans to return on
November 21, 2014 during the kids lunch period to check on their progress. It is important to recycle
and there are many products that can be recycled that many people are not familiar with. Please help
the community build a stronger recycling program and help spread awareness. Get involved by visiting
