4. Introduction
Diarrhea is a serious issue in places where environmental
conditions adversely effect health, food sanitation is a challenge
and people have very poor knowledge about basic hygiene.
Universally, there are almost 1.7 billion cases of diarrheal
disease and 760,000 deaths in children under 5 every year.
Pakistan has the third-highest burden of diarrhea related
mortality in children < 5 y of age with 39500 death annually.
The 2017-2018 Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey
(PDHS) reported the national prevalence of diarrhea amoung
children <5 y of age to be 19%.
4
5. In Pakistan, diarrhea is the leading cause of infant and child
death as around 800,000 children are died due to diarrhea
every year.
Sindh leads with both the highest number of cases of diarrhea
as well as highest number of deaths of <5 y children,
according to independent surveys.
As 2015 has already disclosed that Pakistan still struggles to
be able to meet millennium development goal 4, by the end of
2015. ( Published in Dawn, 12th January, 2015.
Therefore it needs to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of
mothers of <5 y children and there practice to control the
disease spread.

• Most of the mothers (47%) did not
know the causes of diarrhea
• Regarding knowledge mothers (40%)
were not able to specify the signs of
diarrhea
• Only 25% mothers used to give ORS
to their children during diarrhea
• Mothers (22.5%) having financial
issues and couldn’t visit doctor.

• All of the mothers were literate in
this study
• Mothers with good knowledge about
diarrheal symptoms were 84%
• 42% mothers had bottle-fed their
chidren without knowledge that this
is the main cause of diarrhea.
• Almost 40% mothers didn’t know

including dehydration

• Around 69% of participants
belong to low socioeconomic
status.
• Only few mothers (12.2%)
answered the KAP questions

ORS in the management of
diarrhea.
Literature Review
8. Objective
A study designed to assess the knowledge, attitude and
practice of mothers of children under five years of age and to
measure the need of health education to mothers about
diarrhea, its causes prevention and proper treatment.
8
9. Significance of the study
This study would help to find out the prevalence of mothers level of
knowledge and associated factors responsible in delay for treatment of
diarrhea and mortality.
Furthermore the Primary researcher will be able to arrange awareness
sessions for mothers on danger signs in children specially under five years
of age.
Consequently, this would increase mothers knowledge and health seeking
behavior lead to decrease in child mortality rate due to diarrheal illness.
