  5. 5. Credibility comes from  Consistent Performance + Building Trust
  6. 6. Great Performance is Important! Consistency is also very important!
  7. 7. You want to be known as someone who can be depended on!
  8. 8. What are your processes for good reliable execution? How do you manage your time and energy? How do you manage deadlines? Take charge of your personal effectiveness!!
  9. 9. #2 Build Trusting Relationships

  13. 13. Day 3: Build you professional style Your professional style is about how you work with others. It includes many intangibles such as how you communicate; how you convey competence; and even how you claim authority.
  14. 14. Ever heard the advice—just be authentic? Should you be “true to yourself” OR should you “be a chameleon”?
  15. 15. The advice: be true to yourself, can be confusing. Who should you be true to— Who you were yesterday? Or Who you want to become tomorrow?
  16. 16. It turns out—a nuanced definition of authenticity is far more helpful. There may be a delicate balance between saying everything that is on your mind AND staying silent on issues that are important. It may help to understand this difference.
  17. 17. Professor Ibarra asks—is there really just ”one true self” or is the self “ever evolving”? …You Decide.
  18. 18. Instead she offers 3 pieces of advice: 1. Learn from diverse role models 2. Experiment with different styles of leading and working. 3. Don’t get too caught into “your story” of who you are. (that may be a trap)

  21. 21. Nothing ventured; Nothing gained! It is hard to stand out if you have never really done anything different. How will you (and others) know what you can potentially do if you are always playing safe?
  22. 22. What can you do in now wherever you are that can be a game changer for you and your organization?
  23. 23. Yet there is always some risk involved in doing something different. What if you fail? What if you embarrass yourself?
  24. 24. Managing Risk is about develop the skills, getting feedback and building support you need to make a success of your new charge.
  25. 25. Occasionally, despite your best effort, things may not work out… Don’t sweat it. Have a playful attitude. Learn from it, admit what didn’t work, and move on.

  27. 27. Ideas from one stage of your career can in fact hold you back in another.
  28. 28. For example, the “Detail Orientation” that was so helpful when you were an “Individual Contributor” can get in the way of being able to step back and look at the bigger picture.
  29. 29. Technical skills that are so valuable at one stage, become replaced by people and big-picture skills at another!
  30. 30. #6 Become Literate In Technology Today no matter what field you work in---technology is a basic skill. Pretty much like reading and writing. If you fall behind in your understanding of technology, you are not likely to be seen as someone who will be able to lead your function in the future.
  31. 31. Three things you can do to improve your tech literacy 1. Familiarize yourself with the technology already at play in your field. How does it help? Even better, understand when it works well, and when it doesn’t. This will help you make choices in the near future
  32. 32. 2. Understand technologies that are still in development that will have an impact on how you operate a couple of years ahead.
  33. 33. 3. Become aware of the broader frame of emerging technologies. Every business will be impacted. Find out the implications to yours.

  35. 35. Day 7: Build Psychological Resilience First! At first this may seem strange. BUT did you know that your mental states impacts your ability to see opportunities, and grow your abilities?

  37. 37. The Next Few Years will see great change and disruption. To thrive in times of great change and uncertainty—you need to be able to develop psychological stamina. All of these are aided by hope, optimism and resilience

  40. 40. Day 8: Develop Dynamic Sensors Learn To Read Your Organizations Focus and Move Towards Opportunities that Support Those.
  41. 41. Not all opportunities are created equal.
  42. 42. There are opportunities that will receive center stage because they match whatever it is that your top leaders are focused on.
  43. 43. That means they will receive resources to succeed and attention when they do.
  44. 44. And there are those that no one truly cares about (even if they do get some lip service)
  45. 45. Being able to sense which is which can help you move towards the opportunities that truly matter.

  49. 49. People always prefer to work with people who can be trusted— those who have competence AND personal qualities that make them trust- worthy.
  50. 50. Make your character count by being conscious of your little actions each day. Ask yourself… Do they represent the best of who you can be?
  51. 51. Day 10: Know Your Demons!
  52. 52. Traits that can be your great strengths… …can at other times work against you.
  53. 53. All of us are human. There are things we do very well. And there are things that trip us. Know what can trip you. Understand it. And work with it.
  54. 54. Hogan Personality Assessments--Derailers
  55. 55. Not all personality derailers are the same though. According to Hogan research– having too much of “Distancing” traits always works against being a good leader. While having at least some of the “Seductive” traits can be helpful. Even though too much is again a danger.
