• Substance abuse interferes with
neurotransmitters and damages connections
within brain
• It also reduces the ability to experience pleasure
• Short and long term memory loss can also occur
due to substance abuse
• Opportunities to learn during school and college
can be missed due to memory loss
• There ability to handle pressure and stress also
reduces and the way their brain acts on different
normal experiences also change such as decision
making.
3. How Drinking Affects Teens
• Puberty can be delayed due to usage of alcohol
• bone mineral density can also be lowered
• levels of liver enzymes can increase which
indicate liver damage
• Shorter limbs and reduced growth potential can
occur due to drinking as a teenager
4. Other long term diseases caused
due to usage of drugs
• Longer-term effects of drug abuse can include heart or
lung disease, cancer, mental illness, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B
and C, and others.
• Long-term drug use can also lead to addiction.
• Depression and mental disorders can also be caused due
to drug addiction.
• Excessive consumption can cause life threatening
diseases
• Lowered IQ level and negative affects on teenagers brain
can cause drop in school grades and lowered interest in
studies or sports.
• Depression and anxiety leads to addiction which causes
problems later in life.
5. practical steps to overcome usage of
drugs
• Change your friends if your friends take drugs, learn to say
no when they ask you to take drugs or have a good excuse
for not taking drugs.
• Learn to overcome depression without taking drugs, if you
are facing depression because of family problems, your
collage grades or due to family problems, try other ways to
overcome these type of situation like getting involved in an
old hobby such as reading or sports.
6. • Make yourself busy, stay away from places such as bars
to avoid drinking, indulge in sports and make new friends
who do not take drugs.
• Ask help from your family members as they will always
be ready to help you make a change. Talk to your family
or friends about the reasons you take drugs and ask their
help in recovering because it can be difficult to make a
change alone.
• Adopt a pet to keep yourself away from drugs and keep
you busy.
7. • Write down the positive changes you are experiencing
while you are in the process of leaving drugs to keep
yourself motivated.
• During the process of recovery never give up even if you
fail once, just keep trying to change yourself and try to
keep yourself motivated during the process.
• Always keep in mind the negative aspects caused
because of drugs which are mentioned in previous slides
while trying to quit drugs.
