This presentation will show you the basics of forming Spanish numbers 0-100. This assumes you already know how to form numbers through 30, but does offer a review.

2. 2-digit numbers
» The hispanic world is based on the
metric system: base of 10.
» Use the tens place to start.
» “Add”, using the word “y”, which
means and.
» Attach any number left over. This
should be a 1-digit number.

3. Let’s look at 39.
» Base number: 30 treinta
» Add: y y
» Remaining number: 9 nueve
» The final answer: treinta y nueve

4. Let’s look at 72.
» Base number: 70 setenta
» Add: y y
» Remaining number: 2 dos
» The final answer: setenta y dos

5. Exceptions: 16-19 & 20s
» These numbers can be written as
three words or one.
» Look at these examples:
» 16: diez y seis OR dieciseis
» 18: diez y ocho OR dieciocho
» 22: veinte y dos OR veintidos
» 28: veinte y siete OR veintisiete

6. 100: cien or ciento?
» Is the number only 100; nothing
else? Use cien.
» Is the number higher than 100?
Use ciento.
» Examples:
» 107 - ciento siete
» 100 - cien
» 124 - ciento veinticuatro

7. decimals
» Fractions are expressed with “y”.
» Any number over 100 should not
be using the y other than the 2-
digit numbers.
» English speakers use “and”
incorrectly, thus confusing another
language.

» Poor English: one-hundred and
fifty-two.
» Proper English: one-hundred fifty-
two.
» Poor Spanish: ciento y cincuenta y
dos = 100.52
» Proper Spanish: ciento cincuenta y
dos = 152
