6. Retrieval Systems shall meet the following requirements:
1910.146(k)(3)(i):
Each authorized entrant shall use a chest or full body harness, with a
retrieval line attached at the center of the entrant’s back near shoulder
level, above the entrant’s head, or at another point which the employer
can establish presents a profile small enough for the successful removal
of the entrant…
1910.146(k)(3)(ii):
The other end of the retrieval line shall be attached to a mechanical
device or fixed point outside the permit space in such a manner that the
rescue can begin as soon as the rescuer becomes aware that the rescue
is necessary. A mechanical device shall be available to retrieve
personnel from vertical type permit spaces more than 5 feet deep.
7. Tripod:
• Carrying case.
• Cast Aluminum Head:
• Wench eye bolt.
• Leg locking pins.
• Three extendable and fold out legs:
• Extend up to 7 feet.
• Legs fold out and lock into place.
• Gripping padded feet.
• Barrier chains from leg to leg.
9. Authorized person(s): The
ONLY person(s) authorized for
the use of the Miller Tripod and
MIGHT Evac rescue system are
those that have successfully
completed this course and the
written exam at its conclusion.
10. When should the Miller Tripod and MIGHT Evac
retrieval system be used?
1910.146(k)(3)(ii):
The other end of the retrieval line shall be attached to a mechanical
device or fixed point outside the permit space in such a manner that the
rescue can begin as soon as the rescuer becomes aware that the
rescue is necessary. A mechanical device shall be available to
retrieve personnel from vertical type permit spaces more than 5 feet
deep.
12. • Extended each of the (3) legs
of the tripod to the desire
height.
•
Do this by removing the leg
extension pin and extend leg,
reinstall leg extension pin to
secure leg at desire height.
• Repeat above step for other
legs.
13. • Stand the tripod upright and
fold legs outward.
• Ensure legs snap into place
and are secured by the leg
locks at the top of the legs in
the head housing assembly.
14. • Install the MIGHT Evac
retrieval system.
• Remove mounting pins
from mounting bracket.
• Place “aiding hook”, which
is located on one leg, onto
“aiding pin”. This will
alleviate the weight of the
retrieval system during
installation.
15. • Reinstall mounting pins
• Place the bottom pin in
first, do this by placing
the pin through the
mounting bracket and
through the leg.
• Place the upper pin into
place. This pin is placed
through the mounting
bracket and behind the
leg.
16. • Pull cable out of the MIGHT
Evac retrieval system and
attached carabineer to
center eye bolt on the head
housing assembly.
• Ensure cable is riding on the
pulley assembly.
19. TESTING
•
Check to see if the MIGHT Evac retrieval
system is working correctly by grabbing
the cable just above the harness
connecting hook and pulling downward
fast and firmly.
•
System should engage and stop the
release of anymore cable from the
MIGHT Evac drum assembly.
•
Pull several feet of cable out and release
slowly, ensure cable is retracted back
into the MIGHT Evac system.
20. Testing the Winching Mechanism
• Pull several feet of cable out and hold firmly into place.
• Pull plunger pin, located on the top of the MIGHT Evac
assembly. This will cause the handle to pop out and engage
the winching mechanism.
• Slowly start to wind the cable CCW, this will retract the cable.
• While maintaining a firm grip on the cable, slowly turn the
handle CW and the cable can be released slowly.
• This will be demonstrated on the video.
