Using Facebook to communicate and engage
with your residents and wider community

platform in the UK by a very long way, across most
age groups and demographics

Councillor page, or use an official council account
(if you hold a certain civic role) to get out your message
โ— Very important to understand how Facebook works,
which will shape how you use it and get the most from it
as a councillor

2. Set up a โ€˜Call to Actionโ€™ button
3. Use your Facebook pageโ€™s โ€˜Inboxโ€™,
auto-responder and FAQ functionality
4. Review your page settings regularly
What sort of content should I post?
โ— Provide news and information pieces
from your council or local groups, keeping
people informed and updated
โ— Signpost to your councilโ€™s services and to
services provided by other organisations
โ— Ask questions to find out what people
think about different issues
โ— Share content from elsewhere - local
councils, other councillors, local
community groups, etc

better than just text

acronyms that might make your
content inaccessible or irrelevant
โ— Donโ€™t assume that people
have a prior knowledge of the
subject youโ€™re talking about

โ— Use emojis (yes, really!) in your
content - there are hundreds to
choose from
โ— They can effectively convey tone
and make it clearer what youโ€™re
trying to say. Find appropriate
emojis for your content at:

โ— On Facebook, make use of
coloured and image backgrounds
to really stand out from the crowd
A few things to be aware of on social media
โ— Humour DOES have its place, but
be careful and avoid innuendo,
libelous comments and arguments
โ— Donโ€™t reply in anger (or after a
drink) - walk away and come back
later, and consider how to proceed
โ— โ€œDonโ€™t feed the trollsโ€ - this is
increasingly a challenge and an
issue for councillors at all tiers of
local government
Share, share and share some more..
A great way to promote your message is
through sharing content to and from:
โ— Local โ€˜Notice Boardโ€™ pages and
community Facebook groups
โ— Pages and profiles of other well
known people locally - councils,
Cllrs, MPs, etc
โ— Pages of local charities, services
and organisations
Never be afraid to try, test and experiment!
(and have the confidence to do so )
Create graphics to illustrate your content,
tell a story, promote an event and more
โ— Create visually-appealing graphics using a tool
such as www.canva.com to visually illustrate
your content and get more engagement
โ— Post the graphics on your own Councillor
Facebook page, in local community Groups
and in your other social media channels
Use a scheduling tool to save you time
โ— There are lots of social media
scheduling tools that allow you to
plan your content and โ€˜scheduleโ€™ it
ahead of time, as well as to
manage multiple channels all in
one place
โ— Create a free Hootsuite account
(for up to three social media
channels at:
www.hootsuite.com/create-free-account
Four things to go and try today:
1. If you donโ€™t already have one, set up your councillor Facebook page
2. โ€˜Likeโ€™ or join local Facebook pages and groups - and where possible do so
join the group with your new page
3. Try writing a post on your page and sharing it to relevant groups in your
community and see how people engage
4. Share a piece of relevant content on to your page from another source
(other councillors, councils, MPs, local media, services, organisations etc.)

Instagram โ— Very effective for engaging with younger residents in particular โ— Highly visual platform, with an increasing focus on video as well as image-based content โ— Great for engaging with specific issues or places through the power of #hashtags โ— Most features can only be controlled on the app - rather than on a web browser
  • 4. Twitter โ— Great for engaging with specific issues or places through the power of #hashtags โ— Easy to start 1-2-1 conversations with key community stakeholders (police, other authorities, other Cllrs, local and national organisations, etc) โ— Fantastic tool for researching what people think about issues
  • 5. YouTube โ— YouTube is the second most popular search engine after Google! โ— Great way to promote video content โ— Well used by younger age groups in particular โ— Helps you to be found on search engines
  • 6. Using Facebook to communicate and engage with your residents and wider community โ— Facebook remains the most widely used social media platform in the UK by a very long way, across most age groups and demographics โ— You can use your personal account, set up your own Councillor page, or use an official council account (if you hold a certain civic role) to get out your message โ— Very important to understand how Facebook works, which will shape how you use it and get the most from it as a councillor
  • 7. Ensure your Facebook page (and other channels) are fully optimised and configured correctly Quick tips to enhance your Councillor Facebook page: 1. Set up your pageโ€™s unique www.facebook.com โ€˜addressโ€™ 2. Set up a โ€˜Call to Actionโ€™ button 3. Use your Facebook pageโ€™s โ€˜Inboxโ€™, auto-responder and FAQ functionality 4. Review your page settings regularly
  • 8. What sort of content should I post? โ— Provide news and information pieces from your council or local groups, keeping people informed and updated โ— Signpost to your councilโ€™s services and to services provided by other organisations โ— Ask questions to find out what people think about different issues โ— Share content from elsewhere - local councils, other councillors, local community groups, etc
  • 9. What makes for engaging social media content? Engaging content is: โ— Relevant โ— Interesting โ— Informative โ— Tells a story โ— Seeks feedback โ— Asks questions
  • 10. Bring your social media content to life โ— Be authentic - do what you feel most comfortable with and act in the same way you would in day to day life โ— Build up a conversation - you are likely to get comments to respond to and people will appreciate you engaging with them โ— Use images (or better, a video!) to tell a story - even if you just use a generic photo, images are always better than just text

Top tips for finding โ€˜genericโ€™ photographs โ— Generic (โ€˜stockโ€™) photos are images that can be used to illustrate a story when you donโ€™t have a photo yourself โ— There are several free websites where you can get high quality, free stock photos: โ—‹ www.pexels.com โ—‹ www.unsplash.com โ—‹ www.pixabay.com
  • 12. Consider the language you use! โ— Social media is very โ€˜chattyโ€™ and usually personal in style โ— Avoid โ€˜council speakโ€™ and acronyms that might make your content inaccessible or irrelevant โ— Donโ€™t assume that people have a prior knowledge of the subject youโ€™re talking about
  • 13. A word on emojis and backgrounds... โ— Use emojis (yes, really!) in your content - there are hundreds to choose from โ— They can effectively convey tone and make it clearer what youโ€™re trying to say. Find appropriate emojis for your content at: www.emojipedia.org โ— On Facebook, make use of coloured and image backgrounds to really stand out from the crowd
  • 14. A few things to be aware of on social media โ— Humour DOES have its place, but be careful and avoid innuendo, libelous comments and arguments โ— Donโ€™t reply in anger (or after a drink) - walk away and come back later, and consider how to proceed โ— โ€œDonโ€™t feed the trollsโ€ - this is increasingly a challenge and an issue for councillors at all tiers of local government
  • 15. Share, share and share some more.. A great way to promote your message is through sharing content to and from: โ— Local โ€˜Notice Boardโ€™ pages and community Facebook groups โ— Pages and profiles of other well known people locally - councils, Cllrs, MPs, etc โ— Pages of local charities, services and organisations
  • 16. Never be afraid to try, test and experiment! (and have the confidence to do so )
  • 17. Create graphics to illustrate your content, tell a story, promote an event and more โ— Create visually-appealing graphics using a tool such as www.canva.com to visually illustrate your content and get more engagement โ— Post the graphics on your own Councillor Facebook page, in local community Groups and in your other social media channels
  • 18. Use a scheduling tool to save you time โ— There are lots of social media scheduling tools that allow you to plan your content and โ€˜scheduleโ€™ it ahead of time, as well as to manage multiple channels all in one place โ— Create a free Hootsuite account (for up to three social media channels at: www.hootsuite.com/create-free-account
  • 19. Four things to go and try today: 1. If you donโ€™t already have one, set up your councillor Facebook page 2. โ€˜Likeโ€™ or join local Facebook pages and groups - and where possible do so join the group with your new page 3. Try writing a post on your page and sharing it to relevant groups in your community and see how people engage 4. Share a piece of relevant content on to your page from another source (other councillors, councils, MPs, local media, services, organisations etc.)
