5. Nature and Background
• Batawel (Rice-stalk Relay Race) is a group race game
patterned after the work of farmers carrying the harvested
rice stalks from the fields. It is often played during town
and provincial fiestas and is always the event in these
occasions. Batawel has 10 stations. Each station has a
member of each team. Players carry a pole loaded with
bundles of palay at both ends, racing one after the other to
the finish line. The first team to finish is declared as the
winner.
12. •Competition format:
The race may be by elimination process
where all entries shall be divided into sets of
three or four. The group winners in each set
shall qualify for the next level.
14. 1. Batawel has 10 stations. Each station has a
member of each team.
2. Each team shall be given a batawel which shall
be 1.5 meters in length. Each player shall carry
10 bundles of palay weighing a total of 20 kilos.
3. Players carry a pole loaded with bundles of
palay at both ends, racing one after the other
to the finish line.
15. 4. A player shall carry his load upon his
shoulder, run the 12 meters, and transfer it
to the waiting receiver at the next station.
5. The player shall go beyond the line before
transferring the load to the waiting runner.
Ifugao is home to highland people, also called Ifugao, who developed a fascinating culture of growing rice by carving terraces out of a mountain. They turn golden throughout the harvest season from June to early August. And in the barren months till the next planting season, they reflect the mood of the sky blanketing above them.
